He didn't envy her. James Aiden was a prick. But then, he couldn't say he envied Aiden, either... he knew from experience how annoying Valerie Heckett could be.
"My father is doing well," he replied, thinking that expressions such as dear old man were distinctly un-Valerie-like. Something's funny, he thought, though he showed no outward signs of curiosity. He could find out just what was going on by himself, if he had to. "He's speaking with Lord Allen and Lady Gray." He nodded over to where the group was chattering. "Some conversation about the state of the fleet. Things I hear every day at work, not things I'd like to hear at a ball." He offered a small smile. "And how have you been lately? No major mishaps, I hope?" He glanced down at the empty table in front of her. It was not unusual for a lady to deny herself food altogether at a party like this, due to their insufferable clothing... but he found it funny, regardless, that Valerie could be so constrained. His eyes took on a mischevious glitter, though it was very subtle. "Don't like the food? I thought the steak and potatoes were exceptional. And they're serving dessert soon-- apparently, they've got something exquisite planned." |

Frost nodded, bowing slightly to Marguerite and offering his hand to her. He then placed his hand gently on her waist, waited for the music, then began to waltz. Ignoring the lessons on the ship -- which, of course, had been without music and thus couldn't count anyway -- he hadn't danced in a long time. He couldn't really say that he missed it; the last memory he had of dancing with a woman was not exactly pleasant. She was unpleasantly plump, as he recalled, and very sweaty. His parents later explained that they had hoped to engage him to her, but he threatened suicide or mass murder to change their minds. Even his parents had trouble reading him by that point, but they could tell that he was serious: he had brought his sword with him to meet with his parents, expecting that they would have such plans. Still, with that as the main exception, he had generally seen dancing as one of the least annoying parts about formal functions. Usually it meant talking with a pretty girl and getting away from the parents for a brief while, after all. If nothing else, dancing with Marguerite was nostalgic. On the other side of the ballroom, an exceptionally dressed gentleman received a small piece of paper. He looked at it briefly, smiled triumphantly, and placed it in a pocket inside his jacket. His gaze swept slowly across the crowd. He didn't seem to find what he was looking for, but that didn't hinder his look of triumph. Instead, he simply turned to the woman next to him (presumably his wife) and whispered something in her ear. She quickly gained that same smile upon her face. OOC: PS: I really wasn't sure if I should have breezed through the dance or what... so I didn't. Also, foreshadowing that idea of mine. I'm reasonably sure that I'll have it happen, although there are plenty of other developments, too XD; Anyway, there's no way this was going to go smoothly... so why not more craziness, right?
Thank God they're just characters... ^^; |

I'll go ahead and breeze through the dance, then, if that's not a problem. Not much they can do except be awkward. XD There is nothing awkward about this situation. He's supposed to be my husband. Therefore, there is nothing at all wrong with this picture. Barring the fact that I'm supposed to be a guy and the Captain has his hand on my waist, this situation is perfectly normal. Marguerite was relieved, to say the least, when the dance was over; she'd spent the whole thing trying to remember the steps and convince herself that it wasn't weird to be dancing with Frost. In the first, she succeeded; the second was a complete failure. "Well," she said, relieved, as the music came to a halt, "shall we go see that lovely young lady and her two equally lovely escorts?" She believed now was the ideal time to begin distracting the old man next to Heckett; after dancing, she felt considerably worse than before. She hadn't realized that was possible, but her skin was definitely pale now, and she was having some trouble remaining upright. She held tightly to her "husband's" arm, hoping that she didn't look too awful to blend in. |

EDIT: I've fixed it. note: aiden is not a brownnoser when he feels it'll be embarrasing (he has a big ego and hates it when things don't go his way, remember?) he just looks out for himself above all xD "Blow it out your ass, Griffin," Aiden said by way of a greeting, still coughing as he had not yet recovered from the pirate sighting. He had no problem direspecting his equals or people below him, as he knew that he could get away with most anything, being the best pirate-catcher the fleet had. Jenny turned to the others. "I will go distract Aiden and the others... Don't worry, Griffin won't recognise me, I mean, Aiden hardly did the first time we met after all the years, and he was the closest to me... How sad is that. Ta-ta~" She skipped over to the Admiral's table, coming around behind everyone so that she could surprise Aiden. She folded her arms on his head and rested her chin on them. "Well, well, well, if it isn't the one all the pirates call Grim Reaper Aiden," she said with a smile. "What in..." Aiden began, half turning. ...Jenny. It's JENNY! But I can't... I can't do anything... JESUS CHRIST! His face turned pale, as he was trying to suppress his anger, and in trying so hard to make his face not go a livid red, he kind of went the other way. His glass wine goblet, which he had drank empty a minute ago, was resting in one of his hands. He was so surprised at Jenny's appearance, and angry, that he crushed it. Mostly into a fine powder, but little pieces of it had gone into his hand, which was now bleeding quite profusely. "Oh my," Jenny said with a small smile and a mock-gasp. |

Philip raised an eyebrow and did not offer to help. Serves you right, you insufferable bastard, he thought, though he would never dream of using such language aloud. Unlike Griffin, he had a mind for diplomacy-- he knew that ranks and stations were never quite certain, and he would hate to offend the wrong person by accident. He could probably get away with it (when it came to pirate-catching, he could keep up with even the Grim Reaper Aiden), but he chose to keep things easier for himself. No use saying things that didn't need to be said just for the purpose of insulting someone... even a worthless piece of slime like James Aiden. Philip turned his attention to the man resting on Aiden's head. (Who was, he noticed, not a man; "he" had no adam's apple, and was apparently well-enough-endowed that a binding job didn't quite hide everything the way it should.) "I'm afraid I haven't the pleasure of your aquaintance, sir," he said, offering a cool smile. |

Growin' up poor and around lots of Irish and Scottish does that I guess. LOL, I love Griffin~ They probably both think the others' the bigger brown-noser xD They're like... rivals or something Jenny smiled her Cheshire-cat smile again. 'Oh ho, you have, you have... But you've probably forgotten by now, huh, Phillip?' She thought. 'I was much different back then... Not just the obvious, like the missing leg and eye... But I was younger then, more dignified, a pampered, upstanding rich girl used to doing nothing--I was quite good at that, if I remember correctly. He probably doesn't remember me, because I was always quiet and timid like a mouse...' But... although she wanted to say that aloud, she couldn't. She would save that kind of talk for the end of the night, right before the getaway. So instead, she said, "Neither have I, sir. However, I suppose that it will not matter... We can lie to ourselves and say that we will remember each other, tell each other our names and life stories... But tommorrow, or the next day, all that will remain in our mind are wisps of memories. Not worth it, in my humble opinion." Aiden rolled his eyes. Counting down the seconds until I can snap and knock their heads together, he thought, in reference to Valerie and Jenny. To distract himself, he began to pick the pieces of glass out of his hand and put them on an empty plate. Suddenly, he noticed his head felt lighter--Jenny had gotten off and leaped away as a pale woman with black hair in a cook's white uniform threw a plate at him. "THAT'S MOTHERFUCKIN' DISRESPECTFUL!" Moira screeched, and then went back into the kitchen, fuming. "People these days, oh my friggin' God..." The plate, being extremely heavy, glanced off of Aiden's head without breaking, but caused a serious bruise, and also caused Aiden to pitch forward into the table. A silence descended apon the ballroom. Everyone wanted to laugh, but was waiting for it to be okay... Jenny pointed and laughed. "I don't care who you are, that's funny right there!" If Aiden wasn't semi-comatose, he would have probably killed them all. But, being as it was, they were free to laugh at him. OOC:YES.
If you didn't catch it (and you should) this post has Moira the dhampir and a Larry the Cable Guy line in it xD |

Everyone thinks you're a gentleman, but you're no gentleman. It's just a disguise for your black heart! You wouldn't make such a bad pirate come to think of it... Her thoughts were interrupted by none other than Jennifer Johnson.
So the pirates decided to make the first move, and on our turf, too, Valerie's grin grew wider, as if that was possible. This is getting better and better... and James look ridiculous with his new hat. I love pirates. Valerie jumped and shielded her face from the shards of ceramic as the plate hit him in the head. She peeked and laughed out loud at the results. And I thought this couldn't get more fun! Best. Party. Ever! "Mr. Johnson, you devil," Valerie greeted Jennifer once she recovered from laughing. She glanced up at Griffin, and could tell that he was not buying her disguise, but this was a game and she decided to play along. "May I introduce to you my employer, Admiral Philip Griffin. Johnson is an old friend of James; they go way back. Just what brings you to these parts, Johnson, darling? I feel like I'm watching a school of fish out of water." |

Mo--I was thinking the same thing as Valerie... He would make the perfect pirate. Actually, I had a dream about that the other night... What happened is that he did something unforgiveable and they kicked him out of the Navy, and so he went to pirating xD He was even better than Jenny, as he had no qualms about attacking anyone at any time (Jenny only attacks Naval vessels...). He attacked and sinked freakin' everyone >__> And then, as always, it ended with them killing each other >__> strangely touching... "Well..." Jenny said, still chuckling at Aiden, who was still completely out of it, "Mr. Redford and I are used to such trifles, but I am afraid Mrs. Redford and the others do not get out of the house very often. Oh... nice to meet you again, Admiral. You probably do not remember me from when we first met so many years ago... I had all my parts and was not so chatty." She raised an eyebrow. "Ah, Miss Heckett, wouldn't you like to know?" She smiled that goofy, far-away smile that had become her trademark--for although she rarely used opiates anymore, her personality and mannerisms remained as if she still did. OOC:...and then the disco ball dropped from the ceiling and speakers came out of the walls blasting "You Dropped a Bomb on Me" xDD
Hell, that would be freakin' hilarious. |

Valerie said, poking the admiral with her closed fan. Jenny's dreamy smile peaked her curiosity, and she almost wanted to explode for the waiting. "I would love to know, but I suppose I can wait."
"Mr. Redford? Ah, of course," Valerie said, smiling knowingly at the pirate. "And now there's a Mrs. Redford? I had know idea that the iscicle was married! When did this happen? Do I know her?" OOC:CHICKEN DANCE!!!! Dadadadadadada! Dadadadadadada! Dadadadada! *clapclapclapclap* |

@mo: I think you forgot a few "da's" at the end... *horrible memories about the chicken dance* "Yes, quite," Frost responded, throwing in another fake smile. He looked over to where Heckett and Aiden were sitting. What he saw didn't exactly excite him. Too much brass over there, he thought with concern. A stolen glance at Marguerite wasn't exactly encouraging either. Though he figured she would be fine, she was starting to look a bit pale. Oh well, we'll just have to hurry things along. Frost leaned in close to Marguerite and said softly so that only she could hear, "I'll follow shortly and pull Heckett away to dance. You need to be distracting those stuffy high-ranking gentlemen. Possible?" Frost's last word choice was interesting. It was just vague and simple enough to sound like a command he might issue at sea, yet seemed to imply some concern for her. His tone of voice, as usual, was unhelpful. More likely, perhaps, was that he was questioning her ability to distract two admirals at once. Whether that was out of actual concern or simply to trick her into working harder, of course, was just as indiscernible. |

They're all there. I'll vouch for Mo: I just counted them. "Of course," she replied, her indignance momentarily overcoming her discomfort. If he'd meant to goad her into working harder, he couldn't have said anything that would have done a better job. Leaving him standing there, she made her way carefully to the table where the big important men were sitting. Delicate, she thought, carefully supressing a frown of concentration. Think pretty, graceful, delicate. One quick glance back at the Captain restored her resolve; she would not appear incapable. Not in front of him-- she desired his respect far too much to put in anything but the highest efforts. "Mr. Johnson," she said, approaching Jenny and laying a gloved hand delicately on her arm. She offered what she hoped was a pretty smile and actually pulled it off rather well. "So good to see you again-- I was afraid we'd lost you." She smiled up at the two men, as well as Valerie Heckett. "Will you introduce me?" she asked, turning back to Jenny. Play along, dammit. |

@Dan: Breaking his glass and putting the bloody pieces of it on a nice clean plate is why Moira yelled at him for being disrespectful. xD Jenny bowed, "Honorable Admiral, Lady Heckett, this is the aforementioned Mrs. Redford." Aiden groaned and rolled over, but didn't wake up. If Jenny didn't hate him so much, she would be worrying about if he had a concussion. |

"How did Mr. Redford manage to snag a pretty thing like you? I must say you seem like you were well worth the effort." She motioned to Griffin and Aiden. "Might I introduce you to Admiral Griffin and Admiral Aiden, who is currently indisposed. Thank heaven."
"I say, Mrs. Redford," she said a little softer and more concerned. The 'Lady' was obviously in a lot of discomfort. Maybe her corsets are too tight? "Are you well? Please take a seat. Philip, don't just stand there, be useful and seat her." |

Marguerite managed a weak smile and thanked Admiral Griffin, who had just vacated his seat for her. "It's a little warm in here," she said apologetically. "But I'll be all right. I must say I'm rather worried about Admiral Aiden." She frowned at him, appearing more concerned than she actually was. "He's going to be all right, I hope?" Admiral Griffin, who after giving up his seat had settled for standing just behind Marguerite's, was the first to reply. "He had... problems with his drink." He glanced pointedly at the shards of bloody glass sitting on the plate, and Marguerite-- who had, of course, seen much worse-- made a passable gasping noise. "Oh, my..." ~~~~~~~~ "He'll be all right." Philip's expression had not changed; he was quite obviously not in the least concerned for James Aiden. He was, however, concerned for the lady. Valerie had been right in commenting on Mrs. Redford's condition. She looked pale. "Shall I get you a glass of punch, Mrs. Redford?" he asked. She looked up at him gratefully. "That would be wonderful. Thank you, Admiral." "Not at all," he said, dismissing her thanks, and left to find the punch bowl, thinking all the while that Mrs. Redford bore an uncanny resemblance to Rose Kearney. No, she couldn't be the girl his father had been searching for-- she was supposed to be doing poorly, after all. Rose had mentioned something about sneaking her daughter onto a pirate ship, and Mrs. Redford did not appear in any way to be a pirate. Still, there was always a chance. Rose may have been mistaken; her daughter may have managed to marry well and find herself a tidy little life wearing gowns and attending balls. I'll have to have a talk with Mrs. Redford, Philip decided as he spotted the punch bowl on the other side of the ballroom. It can't hurt. Perhaps when she's well enough to dance. ~~~~~~ Marguerite glanced up at Frost, hoping he'd caught onto the situation; one Admiral was indisposed, and the other was busy looking after her comfort. If he wanted an opening, she thought, there was no better time. |
