The H.M.S. Zephyr had pulled in to port that morning, and almost immediately, a Royal Navy messenger had rushed on board with an envelope. He handed it to Aiden, and then promptly left the ship. Aiden had brought it to his cabin, and had put it down on his desk, where it still was, unopened. It seemed to stare at him, the too-perfect lettering suggesting something sinister. Aiden sighed. "Might as well see what the hell this is about," he said gruffly, getting up out of his cot and picking up the letter. He ripped open the envelope roughly, and pulled out the paper within. To Admiral J.C. Aiden with the best of regards-- You and your subordinate Miss Valerie Heckett are cordially invited to the annual Royal Naval Ball to be held in the Grand Ballroom of the Palace, at six'o'clock sharpe. -From, the Admiral of the Fleet "I knew it. Goddamn. I guess I have to attend that travesty once again, as the invitation's from my superior officer..." He sighed, but was gritting his teeth at the same time. A sailor peeked his head around the door. "You called?" "No, but you're just in time. Tell Heckett to get down from the crow's nest and get her ass to my room." "Right, sir!" He was just about to leave, when he stopped and turned around. "If it's any consolation, sir, I hear that the Queen and King themselves may come." "Hm? What's that got to do with me?" "Rumour has it that you're up for knighthood for your services to England, y'know, capturing all those pirates." "Oh." A smile spread across Aiden's face. "Actually, that does cheer me up..." The sailor saluted him, then turned and went to go get Valerie. |

We may as well do it. Right
Valerie was playing a cheery little tune on a fife she had whitled herself that morning. Her hands were rough, but her fingers were nimble and the music was carried away on the breeze. Hopefully, it was carried right into Aiden's cabin. Now, she could annoy the grumpy ol' fart without having to leave the comfort, and safety, of the crow's nest. She was quite proud of herself, and couldn't figure out why it took her four years to come up with the idea. A shout reached her ears, and the happy music abruptly ended, and Valerie looked down. "Aye, what do ye want?" she asked the sailor. "Admiral Aiden summons you to his quarters, Miss Heckett!" called the officer in reply. Valerie cringed; 'Miss Heckett' simply did not have the same ring as 'Captain Heckett.' "Tell him I am currently indisposed," she answered simply and raised the fife to her lips again. "I'll get my head shot off!" she replied desperately. "That sounds like a personal problem," she answered. "B-but-" "No." "Please, Miss-" "No!" After a moment of silence, Valerie peeked over the edge. He was still there, looking up at her with a desperate look on his face, begging her to show mercy. Unfortunately, he was looking for mercy in the wrong place. She grinned toothily, and called down, "Tell James that if he comes out and says please, I'll think about coming down." The officer hung his head and walked away to deliver his new message. |

I figured that if one of us didn't do a separate thing, then it wouldn't happen, and that made me sad. So I did the deed. xD;
The cabin door burt open, splintering off of the handles with a loud BANG. "WHAAAAAT?!" Aiden yelled. "Bloody hell, the disrespect!" He stomped over to the base of the mast, face turning a brilliant shade of red, and yelled up, "Get your ass down here this instant, Heckett! And if you call me James one more time, I'll... I'll... ARGH!" Midsentance, he realized that he couldn't lay a finger on her, or bye-bye knighthood and bye-bye ANY chance of a promotion... ever. So, he took his anger out on the mast. He punched a large, splintery divot in it (also causing untold damage to his hand, but he didn't care). OOC:LOL... making him say 'please' is gonna be hilarious... He never says please. Ever. |

Val jumped at the sudden noise from down below, and a warm satisfied feeling spread from her head to her toes. She did a simple jig as she played a cheery tune while Captain Aiden ranted, threatened, realized that his threats were hollow and took his anger out on something inanimate. It was precious moments like these that Valerie cherished and it made the job worth everything. As much as she loathed the man, James was a fascinating individual, and Valerie never tired of finding ways to tick him off. She peeked over the edge, her face was completely straight. "James Cary Aiden, I am not one of your officers you can step on at your leisure," Valerie said, careful to pronounce every word correctly. Her voice was calm, but it easily reached Aiden's ears due to her naturally loud voice. It had taken her weeks to learn "English," and even though the process itself was tedious, she found that the results were exhilerating. "I am to be treated with the respect I deserve as your partner in an effort to protect the crown from rogues, pirates, and other cretins who are up to no good. You will say 'please' or I will not come down." The situation was absolutely perfect! It did not matter whether or not the captain said please, for the damage was already done. Valerie had defied Aiden's order and had scolded him in front of his entire crew. It took every ounce of energy and discipline she possessed in her being not to break out into a smug smile. It did not help that his his red face made him look like a beet in a fancy suit. |

Of course, the stack was not nearly so large as one for a navy vessel -- few people wrote to pirates as few people knew where to send the letters too. Still, there were a couple addressed to pseudonyms and the like. One particularly large envelope -- in both size and girth -- was addressed in a surprisingly neat hand to "Mr. R. Fitzwilliam." With a vague intent to hand them out later, Frost tossed the rest of the letters aside and opened his envelope. Inside was a collection of more normally sized envelopes, as well as a letter. He unfolded the letter, swinging his legs upon his desk and leaning back on his chair.
To the honorable R. Fitzwilliam, it read, As discussed, I have acquired the included items. You may inspect them if you like, but I assure you they are genuine and will pass double-inspection. I have no doubt that your memory has not lost the other details of our discussion. I leave the rest in your most capable hands. Sincerely, with unending respect, undying love, and many more unnecessary and untrue bits of nonsense, (I should hope you know who). PS: Formalities are bloody annoying. Why the hell do you bother? Radley stood up and walked towards the door. It was only for a second, but it almost looked like he was smiling as he stepped out onto the deck. Almost. "Gentleman," he said in a slightly raised voice -- his version of shouting, "stow the flags. Today we head for London. We have a ball to attend." OOC: Bohahaha! Thank you GB! |

She'd been repainting the figurehead at the front of the ship, as there was nothing interesting going on and nobody to shoot or loot or interact with. Aside from the other pirates. And as much as she liked them-- and they liked her-- Marc couldn't help but prefer solitude. It made it easier not to blunder and say something that might reveal her secret; she'd had a few close encounters already. Mostly involving rum, which was why she'd ignored her comrades' astonished expressions and passed it by the previous evening. So now, as everyone grumbled through their hangovers, she sat painting the woman at the front of the ship.
Until she heard the Captain. "We're-- what?" She recognized that look; it was somewhere between nothing and extreme nothing, and her mental Frost-to-English dictionary told her that he was excited. Marc was, to put it lightly, frightened. OOC:I'll give Philip a cameo once the ball starts. ;) |

"Time me," he said off-handedly. He doubted that anyone understood, but continued anyway. "We -- specifically, myself and nine of you who I can trust implicitly -- are attending a ball at the Royal Palace. Many important people will be in attendance -- perhaps Her Majesty even -- but, most importantly, a certain ex-Captain Valerie Heckett. You all have no doubt heard of her hidden treasure." He paused for a moment here, wondering if any of them even understood anything he'd said except for 'treasure.' Besides, most of them needed to catch up. "Among other things, there will be many rich, wealthy, unsuspecting nobles. You lot are all excellent pick-pockets." He paused again. He was sure they could put the two together, and at any rate he didn't feel like explaining it to them any further.
"Now, you won't like this but ten men just aren't going to waltz into a ball without escorts. For those of you who don't understand, that means five of you are getting painted and rouged and are wearing dresses. If you're chosen, you will do it without hesitation -- otherwise, no treasure." The 'understood?' that might normally be inserted here was assumed; they all did, of course. "Naturally, you sorry lot aren't getting anywhere near that palace without drawing attention. So, first things first: Everyone, front and center! Today you learn to walk like a gentleman. The best four may wear a suit." Here, he stopped, waiting for everyone to assemble. When they were settled, he asked, "So, what time?" OOC: Frost doesn't make long speeches often. I bet he wanted to know just how much time out of his life he wasted... did anyone understand? Now that's the real question XD; |

I am not wearing a dress, she thought, panicked. And if she went, she would probably end up wearing a dress. Story of her life; her luck was never quite good with these things. "Uh, Captain?" she began, not entirely sure how she was going to say this. "Could I, you know... not go?"
Nine people he "trusted implicitly." She was fairly certain that meant her. Perhaps she could fake sick or something? "I, uh, I'm sure there are others who'd rather go, and I think I had a little too much rum last night." She hoped very hard that he'd not noticed her lack of any alcohol intake whatsoever. |

He had not known Marc to turn down a good chance to pillage and be on the look out for treasure. Besides, he would be good to have around in case something bad happened, and was more trustworthy than most of his crew -- he wouldn't have become first mate otherwise. Something was obviously wrong here, and Frost wasn't keen on staying ignorant for too long.
"You drank less than I," the captain observed, unimpressed by her excuses. "Even if you can't learn to walk, you've proven to be an excellent pirate. You're going, if I have to dress you myself. Get in line." With that, he looked up and addressed everyone present. "First, you must stand before you may walk. Remember these rules: One, No slouching, shoulders back. If I catch you failing this rule, I will whack you in the small of your back as a reminder. Two, chin up. If your chin is sagging, I whack you underneath your chin. Three, chest out. Ignore this and I whack your stomach." OOC: bohahahaha >B) |

But when she heard the instructions, she panicked again. Chin up, she could do. Shoulders back, maybe. But 'chest out'? Her binding job was good enough to hide her gender in her baggy pirate clothing, as long as she sort of kept her chest... in. He wouldn't buy her excuses. She needed no more than a glance at him to assure her of that. So she tried to fake it, sticking her chest out just a little, enough to make it look like she was standing just a little straighter than usual, but not enough to look quite like a gentleman. Or a woman. |

Silently, he jabbed stomachs and slammed the hilt into people's chins as necessary. "Face forward!" he commanded, noticing a few people looking about to watch his "teaching." "Do not relax from your position until I say so."
He paused when he got to Marc, raising an eyebrow at him. "Don't think a lack of effort is getting you out of this," Frost said flatly, delivering a jab to the man's stomach. "Chest out. You're not a monkey." He continued down the line, circling around and continued with checking their shoulders. "Shoulders back means back," he commanded, disappointed from the first person. "Don't tell me you pirates don't want treasure!" |

At this rate, she thought, I'm gonna end up in a dress. She pushed her shoulders farther back and glared at the Captain for making her do this. Maybe if I sort of fall over,[i/] she thought, [i]and tell him I snuck some rum in the middle of the night? No, that wouldn't work either. Frost wasn't one to fall for ridiculous stories and such. Maybe if I just fell over and didn't say anything, then. But no, there was always the chance that one of the men would take in into his head that he was a doctor and could determine what was wrong using a routine checkup, and then where would she be? She stuck her chest out just a little more, adjusting her shirt a little so it hid her figure just a little bit better. It didn't help much. |

They looked better than they did, that was certain, but it would take more time than they had to erase years of mistakes. For the moment, at least, he would have to move on.
"For now, walking. Remember these: One, toe first, then heel. Two, one foot in front of the other. Three, don't forget any of the previous rules. You lot have seen me plenty. Everyone will take ten steps forward, turn, walk back, and turn again." He paused deliberately, looking into the eyes of the various few who particularly needed to put more effort into this -- including Marc, of course. "Go." OOC: Hrm... wasn't sure what else to here |
| The Ace of Spades Joined: 7 May 2006 Posts: 398 | Posted: Wed Mar 14, 2007 5:45 pm | Characters: All for this theme; By The Ace of Spades: This theme, Any theme Marc took the ten steps, her hips swaying back and forth unconsciously-- she'd spent years walking like a guy, sure, but this whole foot-in-front-of-foot didn't leave much room for fudging it. She glanced down at her feet, which seemed to be doing pretty well, then snapped her chin back up before the Captain could smack her. Her chest was still not-quite-out-- had it been, combined with the naturally swaying hips, some of the men might have wondered.
Well, no matter. She turned around, hardly noticing any of it, and walked back alongside her crewmates, who were fumblind and tripping over themselves. Had her chest been as out as it was supposed to, she would have been walking like a born-and-bred lady... she didn't like the whole foot-in-front-of-foot thing, as it did horrible things to her sense of balance, but her footwork while fencing had always been excellent, and this was one thing she could pull off. OOC:Poor Marc. Can't do any of it without looking like a girl. XD |

"A ball, huh? Formal affairs, always great for shits and giggles." She walked across the deck like a lady, flawlessly, even after all the years, among other circumstances... which she then pointed out. "It can't be that hard, guys. I just did it, and I've got a monster hangover, I'm high, and I have a peg leg."
She poked one guy in the nose. "Really, now." She sighed and smiled again, this time with a hint of a smirk. "Once upon a time, I had to be the pretty trophy wife..." --- Aiden picked a (considerably large) splinter out of his hand and tossed it away. Now his face had gone from fire-red to a deep maroon-purple, and several passerby had to fight to contain their giggles. "Jesus Christ..." He muttered angrily. It's for the knighthood, it's for the knighthood, He thought, a mantra to keep him in something somewhat resembling sanity. "P-please come down, Miss Valerie, er, please?" He squeaked out, at last. OOC:LOL. |
