OOC:From the newest Modest Mouse CD title... thought it was perfect :D

PS. Jenny's themes: "Mama" by MCR, "Anemone" by the Brian Jonestown Massacre

"I've had enough of you disrupting things and spreading hysteria, Steve Barclay." Jenny upended her pipe, and knocked the ashes out and over the side. "You wouldn't leave when I asked you to at the last port, so now you're gonna have to walk the plank."

Some of her pirates looked surprised, but those were the new ones. The old hats knew that this was the way she ran her ship: lead, follow, or get the hell out.

She pointed, and two men on either side of Steve grabbed him, and forced him up on the plank. They then blocked the end so that he couldn't come back on the ship.

"You'll do fine until another ship comes to pick you up," Jenny said. "That island not too far from here has lots of stuff you can eat. Bon voyage, Steve." She gave a disinterested wave, then turned her back to the condemned man.

Suddenly, a terrible screeching and moaning from belowdecks. The first mate's eyes widened. "For the love of God, we've hit a reef in shark infested waters!"

"Oh," Jenny sighed, "Not again. Well... bail for as long as you can. You too, Steve." She didn't sound particularly worried, but she was stroking several teeth on the massive collection of sharks'-teeth strung on a cord around her neck like they were worry stones.

OOC: Just thought I'd throw this here, so Chris can post and not be randomly in the middle of the ocean.

Actually, I wanted to claim post 7600

Captain Frost looked out across the bow of his ship, his hands on the railing. The weather was inviting enough to draw him from his quarters and onto the deck. It had been a while since the last such day, and he had a good feeling. No, good was the wrong word. "Intriguing," perhaps. Yes, something intriguing would definitely happen that day. He was not superstitious by any means, but he had a keen instinct and knew not to ignore it.

"Collapse some sails," he commanded, turning on his heel and heading toward the bridge. He didn't particularly care who heard him; he knew that someone did, and that they would get the word to the people who needed to know. Then, within earshot of those up by the wheel, he added, "I want to take it easy for now in these waters." It was probably more to himself than to anyone in particular, but either way his words traveled.

When Radley got to the top, the helmsman handed him an old, worn-out looking telescope, which the captain accepted almost indifferently. He opened it up and looked over the bow once again. His expression didn't hint at anything, but that certainly wasn't extraordinary by any means. He narrowed his eyes slightly, studying the horizon, then turned to his first mate.

"Marc?" he asked succinctly, offering her the telescope. What he meant to say was "Marc, what do you think?" but Frost was not known to be big on wasting words. He also was not big on explaining himself, as that meant more wasted words. Either way, Marc had been his first mate for a while. Something was different about her, but he couldn't place it. Not that he thought about it, of course. She was a hard-worker and one of the best fencers he'd ever met. Besides that, she seemed loyal and trustworthy -- all traits that were hard to come by.

Something was up -- there was probably no way of knowing what, of course, for most on board -- and everybody was eager to see what the captain had in mind.

OOC: I assume you called shotgun, so you can be one of the cool people on the bridge, Chris >BD

In other news, I think I'm going to Marc as "her" when narrating... I'm really not sure which is correct in this situation, so... o_o; I'll probably randomly switch and it'll be fabulously confusing >_<

OOC:@ Dan: Excellent. Whatever works. I wouldn't mind you referring to her as a him-- I think that would be the accurate pronoun for this narration, since it's more or less from his point of view and Frost doesn't actually know she's a she-- but whichever one keeps you less confused. I'll certainly be referring to her as a her, but that's mostly 'cause she knows she's a girl. Obviously. XD

Steve's eyes widened when the phrase "hit a reef" caught his ears. The bit about "shark infested waters" didn't help, either.

The men blocking his return to the ship had moved when the order to bail was given. Steve ran forward, planning full well to tell the Captain exactly what kind of situation they were in, because she surely couldn't figure it out for herself. "We're gonna sink! We're gonna sink! We're gonna sink! We hit a reef and we're gonna sink and there are sharks and they're gonna eat us because we're gonna sink, Captain, and they're gonna eat us!" He paused for a split second to take a breath, quite frenzied by this time. "We need to bail but I don't see any buckets because all I see is the water because it's coming on board and it's gonna make us sink and then the sharks are gonna get us and we're gonna get eaten and I'm probably perfectly shark-seasoned, Captain, and I don't wanna die but we're gonna because they're gonna eat us and we're all gonna diiiiiieeeee!" He wailed this last bit, causing much of the crew to stop and stare at him.

"We're gonna die!" echoed one of them. One of his crewmates smacked him upside the head and cursed at him some, then went back to bailing. Still, Steve had, as always, managed to plant the doubt in everyone's head... his never-failing pessimism was spreading.

"WE'RE GONNA DIIIIIIIEEEEEEE!"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Marc took the telescope and peered out over the calm waters, knowing full well what the Captain had meant. She had, after all, been around long enough to know that he rarely said more than he felt he had to, and he almost never asked a question when he was likely to get the answer either way. "Everything looks--" good, Captain, she was going to finish...
...but that was before she spotted the mess off on the horizon. "Ooh." She frowned, took a second look, and tried to figure out what the crew of that far-off ship had hit And, more importantly, whether it was a danger to them. Probably. "Better not get too close, Captain," she said quietly, handing the telescope back to him. "Looks like they hit a reef."
OOC:...I assume that's what he was talking about? ^^;
OOC:I'm assuming that's what Dan meant that Frost saw. >__<
"I know, Steve. Now shut up." Jenny then hit him hard across the face with her cane, probably hard enough to break his nose. She put her cane back down, calm as ever and still smoking with her back turned to the chaos.
A mate ran up with a telescope, pointing to the horizon. "Look, look!"
Jenny looked in and focused it. "Ah... another ship. Jack Frost's, if I'm not mistaken.* Good."
OOC:Notes: Their ship is small, mind if I type that some of the pirates get on your ship, Dan?
* Pirate ships flew black-and-white flags with different designs on them, usually incorporating bones.
OOC: Steve officially gets +1 to awesome. I just might buy you a cookie, Chris. Don't feel left out, though, Amelia. Jenny gets +1 for beating the snot out of Steve XD; Maybe to "pimp-slapping"
Oh yeah, and you were half-right about what I wanted you to see. Now that Amelia posted, that's exactly what I wanted you to see. When I wrote it, I had no idea what you were supposed to see XD;;;;;
Frost nodded silently, pleased with Marc's assessment. He took the telescope back and pushed it shut, placing it neatly inside a coat pocket. He walked briskly to the bridge's railing, placing his hands on it and looking at his sailors. His face was calm as death, but his eyes gleamed with almost childlike excitement. He didn't yell orders often -- in fact he didn't yell often -- but when he tended to make an exception when something interesting was about to happen.
"Attention!" he shouted, his voice cutting through the air and projecting into each sailor's ear. "Weapons at ready! Let's have our starboard cannons untied. Double my crow's nest." The reaction was instant and fast. It was not military precision by any means; sailors were bumping into each other, many hobbling from a bit to much grog. Still, they were dedicated, swift, and did what they were told to. That was all Radley wanted. He turned around, resting his left hand on the hilt of his sword while his right took out a pocket watch. He glanced at it briefly then replaced it and looked at the helmsman.
"Their stern, our starboard. " The sailor nodded, adjusting the wheel. He knew what Frost had in mind -- he had been around long enough to know that they were going to be perpendicular to the other ship. Few ships had stern-facing guns, and that was the closest side to them anyway. Everyone on the crew was proud of the assortment of broadside cannons. There were many of them, and they could reload them quickly.
Still, he hadn't ordered battle-stations.... Was he planning to attack it or not?
OOC: Dun dun dun.... Oh yeah, and go ahead, Amelia.
PS: I have no idea what I'm doing XD;;; Or maybe I shouldn't have said that, and kept you under the illusion that I do... hmm... oh welll
"OW! Dat's by doze!"
Steve was about to go into another panicked tirade when he heard-- "Adther ship? Adother ship?" His hands flew away from his bloodied nose in favor of waving wildly around his head. "We're dot godda die! We're dot godda die! Captain Jeddy, we're dot godda die because dere's adother ship ad dey're godda help us ad we're dot godda get eaten by sharks because we're dot godda sink so dey cad't eat us and we're dot godda die!"
In his excitement, he came close to pulling Narcotic Jenny into a hug, which probably would have resulted in instant death.
He was saved by a sudden realization-- she'd said Jack Frost's ship. She hated Jack Frost. More importantly, Jack Frost hated her.
Steve's face fell. "We're all godda die!" he wailed.
OOC:+1! xD *flail*
Jenny rolled her eyes. "No, we're not. Even though he doesn't like to admit it (and what pirate does?) he has a heart. He'll take you guys on until the next port or whatever."
She sighed. "But as for me... he won't kill me. That's because he knows that lording this whole fiasco over me'll be more painful..."
Jenny looked the navigator in the eyes as he came up the stairs. "This is your fault," she remarked, drawing her pistol and aiming between his eyes. "Learn how to navigate better in Hell." She fired, and his body hit the deck with a loud thud as the gun's thunder subsided.
She blew the smoke away from the barrel. "Signalman!"
"Y-yes sir!"
"Say... 'S.O.S.'."
"Okay!" He opened a chest, and began stringing flags on the flagpole in the correct order.
OOC:Er, how close is the other ship? I'm assuming you're coming close enough to see signal flags, so that's why I added the last bit.
"Captain!" the nameless crow's nest person shouted down, "She's strung up an S.O.S." Frost nodded, looking at the flags in the distance. They were just close enough for him to see the colors of the flags. He couldn't make them out clearly without a telescope, but he could at least tell that the watchman was correct.
"Let's throw a warning volley across her bow, Marc," the captain said, his eyes betraying his distrust for the supposedly injured pirate vessel. "We'll not have any jokes."
OOC: I'm really having trouble coming up with ways for Marguerite to be able to do something >_<
There was a sharp crack as the warning volley was fired. "Blew the figurehead clean off..." Jenny remarked.
Someone said, "Oh my God! They've fired at us!!"
Jenny sighed. "Warning volley, you idiot. To see if we're messing around. Don't fire back."
"But they might--!"
"Don't."
"O-okay."
"And by the way, quit bailing. It's no use."
"WHAAAAT?!"
"Give it a rest. Quit bailing. Then the ship'll sink, and they'll see that we're serious."
"Ok," The mate said with a shaky voice. He repeated Jenny's command loudly throughout the ship.
The crew stopped bailing, and showed up on the deck. Underneath them, the deck groaned and pitched to one side, and they all had to grab for something to hold on to as the ship began to succumb faster to the sea.
OOC:TIME WARP!
Just 'cause I wanna give Marc something cool to do.
Marc nodded at the captain and echoed his command to the rest of the crew. Within moments, the cannons were being loaded with the efficiency of a crew well-trained for emergency situations, and Marc stood behind them, waiting impatiently for the preparations to be finished.
"Steady," she called, as one man nearly jumped the gun and shot too early. "Fire!"
The volley sent a loud boom throughout the ship, and Marc smiled as one of the cannonballs hit the ship's figurehead. Good, she thought proudly. Blew the vulgar thing right off.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Everyone stopped bailing.

Except one.

"We're godda die, Captain Jenny," he cried, through his bloodied nose. "We're all godda die, we're godda die, we're godda die!" Every word was puncutated with another bucketful of water flung overboard-- but Steve's bailing could do little on its own, now that the rest of the crew had given up. He knew he'd already pointed out the likelihood of death several times; it had by this point become more of a chant than an actual protest. It was no good, he knew-- and, he also knew, they were doomed.

Jenny sighed. "Steve... you're gonna get blisters on your hands and your voice's gonna give out..."

She looked out over the water at the other ship, which was approaching too slowly for even her liking. If they didn't hurry up, they'd all be dead--the water was rising, and there were sharks circling all around. Some men had even begun to cling to the mast.

Miss Valerie Hackett, former Captain of the pirate ship Neptune's Chariot, known as the most notorious pirate in history, balanced precariously on the edge of the crow’s nest of the Royal Navy’s H. M. S. Zephyr in her bare feet.

“From Captain to look out,” she murmured as she took another shaky forward. “It seems I’ve gone a bit down hill…” However, as demeaning as the task was, the sea wind felt refreshing against her face, and her hair snapped happily in the breeze like the banners on the masts. “But I suppose it’s better than being down below,” she said to herself. “With that prick of a captain, right? Much better…”

Valerie would have never agreed to work for the man, but Admiral Griffin had given her a direct order, which was fairly rare, therefore she had no say in the matter. When Philip ordered her to jump, she could be flippant and stall for a time, but eventually she would have to ask “How high?” Sometimes she wondered whether she had made the right decision. Sometimes she felt so oppressed and caged up, but other times-

A small break on the smooth horizon out of the corner of her eye caught her attention, and she jumped back into the nest, and leaned over to take a better look.

“Hm…” she narrowed her eyes and fished out her telescope and peered into it. To miniscule ships, one appeared to be aiding the other or trying to sink it. She grinned toothily. Valerie was still too far to identify the ships, but both of the ships bore what appeared to be pirate flags. She pulled on her boots and looked down at the deck. Now, there was just one question:

Do I feel like talking to Captain ”˜Pants in a Knot?’

After a brief moment of deliberating, she jumped down, grabbed hold of a rope and swung to the mizzen mast and shimmied down to the deck. She knew that it would be easier to just shout it down to him, but it simply pained her to know that there were such cold feelings between her and the ship’s captain. To make a long story short, she was bored and felt like annoying someone. Now, plenty of people would tell her that it would be less painful poke a keg of gun power with a lit match, but Valerie Heckett would have done that too, if she thought it would be interesting.

“You there,” she said to one of the naval officers. “Is the captain below?”

"Yes, he..."

There were heavy, hobnailed boot steps below, and then the trapdoor to the below decks flew open with a slam. "Present. I can't even enjoy a single cigar in peace, it seems..." He threw the cigar stub over the ship's railing in a fluid motion. "Well, what the hell is it?" He said, kicking the heavy trapdoor closed with one foot.

"Ah, there's the man I wanted to see," Valerie turned around and grinned. "You're a sight to make eyes sore. Smokin's such a dirty habit. I don't see how ye can ever enjoy inhalin' smoke into yer lungs. It smells awful and it will probably even kill ye one day." She scratched a particularly itchy spot on the back of her head, and hoped she did not have fleas again.

"You're one to talk, fleabag," Aiden said, raising an eyebrow. He caught sight of something in the distance out of the corner of his (left) eye. He grabbed the telescope roughly, and aimed it at the ships on the horizon. "This'd be about the ships, correct?" He adjusted the scope, and then said, "I can't make out the flag on the one, it's one I haven't seen before. But the other... why, it's that turncoat's ship! What does he call himself now? Frosty, or something." He compressed the telescope, then lay it back on the deck.

He smirked. "Full sail ahead, boys, we've got fresh meat!" A cheer went up on the ship, because they knew that as long as they did well, the Admiral would be very happy for a while...
