Rekuzan Nezei Age: Appears to be in mid-to-late twenties Occupation: Gotei 13, Captain of 6th squad Description: Often considered to be one of the coldest men in all of Soul Society, Nezei never smiles, laughs, or even displays joy or excitement. For him to even so much as crack a joke is nearly unheard of. He has a tendency to comply to rules harshly, and as such, has no tolerance for injustice of any kind. None have ever heard of him granting leniency to members of his squad, no matter the offense, but this does gain him a great deal of respect from many officers of the Gotei 13, including Captain-Commander Kuchiki. At the same time, Nezei is considered to be the fairest man in all of Soul Society; never punishing those who don’t deserve it. Rather than penalize failure, Nezei recognizes the gain in promoting and rewarding creativity in his squad. He sees it as a useless exercise to demean his adjutants for having clever new ideas. Far from being stubborn, Nezei accepts that he cannot know everything and keeps himself open to innovative thoughts at all times. A cunning analyst, it rarely takes Nezei more than a few seconds to discern minute details from the smallest amount of information. As such, he is an excellent tactical commander and, coincidentally, is an equally talented chess player. On the near-pestering insistence of his lieutenant and his friends, Nezei reluctantly took an IQ test and scored a 165. However, while he easily wraps his mind around solid concepts like strategy, tactics, and causality, Nezei has a difficult time working with abstract material, such as emotions or psychology. In short, while he can say what an enemy will do, he would likely be unable to articulate the personal reason why. While Nezei is tall, just peaking above six feet, he has a slight stature and sometimes seems he could be blown away by a strong gust of wind. His captain’s cloak doesn’t aid him in that respect, as it seems far too large for him, with the sleeves extending past his hands. His piercing radiant blue gaze is only slightly diminished by his thin-framed glasses. His hair extends nearly halfway down his back, held together by a single black ribbon near his head. Beneath his cloak is his reliable sword, belted discreetly on his right hip. Around his neck is a silver Celtic Cross, hung by a black cord as a symbol of his Quincy ancestry. It is often hidden within his haori, however, given his previous alienations. His silent and almost brusque demeanor makes it difficult to get along with him, and although many have tried, it is safe to say his only real friend is Liang Jidat of the 8th squad. History: Unlike many other members of the Gotei 13, Nezei was born in Rukongai. He had two sisters, one younger and one older, and an older brother. He grew up loved by his parents and his friends from the district, and even by his siblings (as often as siblings aren't killing each other, that is). However, while playing with some of his friends one day when he was 8, one boy called him a “filthy Quincy.” Nezei, confused, turned to his father for answers. With a slightly resigned demeanor, Nezei’s father explained to his son the Quincy race, and how before being a part of Soul Society, his father was a Quincy from the world of the living. When he died, he had come here, hoping that the people of Soul Society wouldn’t judge him for being different. Unfortunately, when the other parents learned that he was a Quincy, they started to shun the Rekuzan family to the point where their children disliked them without understanding why. Confused and depressed, Nezei asked his father why they were being vilified. His father then explained the difference between Quincy and Shinigami, and how the two were at odds. “Mark my words,” his father said, “One day soon it will come to a head, and then blood will be spilt without need or cause.” Unfortunately for Nezei, his father was right. Not but five years later, the great battle between Quincy and Shinigami occurred, with the Quincy being nearly annihilated. One night in Rukongai, a mob of ruffians from the 67th district made their way to the Rekuzan household and set it on fire. Although Nezei and his siblings escaped the blaze, their parents were unable to make it out and perished in the flames. From that day on, Nezei accepted his marked fate, though he pragmatically refused to flaunt his heritage. Joining the academy, it became Nezei’s life mission to prove the lack of a difference between the two races by becoming the enemy of the Quincy themselves. By the age of 16, Nezei figured he could show the world that they were wrong about him and his family. Unfortunately, Nezei’s belief was grounded in a solid base of naiveté, and by just listening to the other students talk about the Quincy like the plague, he soon realized it would not be so simple. Resigning himself to his own company, Nezei made it a personal mission to distance himself from people, not wanting to lie about his heritage or be publicly ostracized by the other students. This self-exile is what essentially gave him ability to shut away his emotions so completely, a skill he mastered before he was the 4th seat in his squad. Graduating at the top of his class, Nezei began to climb his way up the 6th squad ladder. His father’s heritage, unbeknownst to him at the time, subtly increased his strength as he absorbed surrounding spirit particles to combine with his own reiatsu. Finally, after years of working, he finally became the lieutenant for the 6th squad. His sister sent him two gifts: a dark black ribbon for whatever he wanted to use it for, and a silver Celtic cross necklace. Nezei kept both on him at all times, using the ribbon to keep his hair back and wrapping the necklace around his wrist (it was less noticeable that way). Still distant from the others, he often went on solo missions. One mission in particular lead Nezei to an astounding discovery. On a special mission to confront a Huge Hollow in the forests around Soul Society, Nezei soon found himself in dire straits as the Hollow knocked the sword from his hands. Desperate to stop him, Nezei thrust out his right hand and tried to prepare a kido spell. What happened instead was a brilliant blue bow shot forth from the cross dangling from his wrist. Surprised but by no means questioning his saving grace, Nezei quickly dispatched the monster. Realizing that he had not just inherited his father’s legacy but also his powers, Nezei soon began to train his Quincy side in private, in case he should ever have need for it. The combined powers he managed to harvest eventually lead to him discovering his bankai, and Nezei never told a soul about his secret for achieving it so early. After many years went by, the Captain eventually retired and turned his cloak over to his aloof and almost reclusive lieutenant. While many in the 6th squad were displeased with such a strange and almost disturbing man leading them, they soon came to respect their new captain and to this day (almost 200 years later) have never questioned his authority. Zanpakutou: “Fushichou Kagemaru,” “Great Phoenix of Shadow” In its sealed form, Fushichou Kagemaru appears to be a normal katana. It is slightly longer than an average blade, however, both on the blade and the handle. The hilt is in the shape of a cross with a circle. Shikai: “Shoushi ni tobe, Fushichou Kagemaru!” “Fly at midnight, Great Phoenix of Shadow!” In its initial release form, Fushichou Kagemaru takes the form of a great blue longbow, much like those of his Quincy ancestors. Using this bow, Nezei is able to fire multiple arrows at once and actually draws in the energy from the air around him to form the arrows. Even at close range, Nezei can wield the bow to deadly effect, both by regular use and by using the bow as a melee weapon if necessary. If used as a melee weapon, however, upon contacting the opponent’s body, a small amount of their spiritual energy is absorbed into the bow for future use. Nezei can use this energy at any time to form powerful arrows. Bankai: “Yuuan Isei, Teikan; Fushichou Kagemaru!" “Dark and Secluded Powers, Clear Vision: Great Phoenix of Shadow!” In final release, Fushichou Kagemaru transforms from a bow into two swords: a longsword with a cross-shaped hilt, much like his unreleased sword, and a nagakatana with a hilt shaped like the Quincy star. Both swords are blue steel with white handles. The long sword has a clear 3/4 blood channel, which turns light blue as it charges reiatsu. When the blood channel fills, Nezei can sheath the longsword in blue flame, increasing its destructive capacities. In his bankai form, Nezei sprouts a pair of wings made fully of reiatsu which he can use to fly. His ability to use his bankai relies on his ability to absorb additional energy from the surrounding area. His power increases to inhuman levels, but if it gets too high it begins to damage his systems. Eventually, Nezei’s power reaches a “critical mass;” if he allows his body to continue to absorb spirit particles, he risks serious internal injuries and death. However, until he reaches that point, his power is incredible. He can usually by a small amount of time by compressing his bankai, containing some of that energy. In his compressed bankai, the hilts of his swords fuse together and form a monstrous bladed bow. Not only is the firing rate impressive, but the damage he can inflict with the blades would be fatal to weaker opponents. When he eventually has to dismiss his bankai, his body is often in a lot of pain and it takes a while to readjust. Miscellaneous: Nezei cannot, under any circumstances, understand or appreciate music. Whenever Narasumi sings strange songs he picked up in the human world, Nezei rolls his eyes and, if no one is around, puts his face into his hand and shakes his head. Nezei is left-handed. And has very messy handwriting. Nezei is often awake at nights, unable to sleep. The 4th squad captain has often offered him sleep aids, but Nezei always refuses. Only Liang Jidat and his adjutant Nanase know of his Quincy heritage. |

Especially if she's babysitting the brat. "Ne-chan"... is that be a suitably annoying and disrespectful nickname for a captain, d'you think? I don't know much about Japanese honorifics. You'll have to help me on this one. :) |
