Not at all deterred by the lack of an interesting thread title, Artemis sauntered down towards the Great Hall. After his first day teaching, he was more than eager to relax and enjoy a solid meal. Lunch had been.... Well, you could say he hadn't actually had lunch. Though he had succeeded in figuring out where everyone was in their studies, some classes had resulted in a bit more of a mess than others. His first years, of course, knew nothing -- he had expected that, and had a lesson plan for them already. His second and third years, however, were surprisingly inexperienced. It was only after they failed to deflect some simple hexes (and several had been whisked off to the medical wing) that he was informed that they had not yet received any practical training. Though he had tried to look as concerned and apologetic as possible at the time, he now looked back with his trademarked, broad, toothy grin.

The victims obviously didn't find anything funny, but it was all he could do to not laugh when half the class was covered in a thick, sticky, paint-like substance that smelled surprisingly like hamster. To their credit, however, they were able to describe exactly what the hex was, its origin, and other such trivial details. On the other hand, his higher-level classes had done quite well. There were more than a few cases of "the slugs," among other things, but Artemis had been at least satisfied with the general knowledge.

As he entered the large room and made his way towards the staff table, he quickly struggled to stifle his smile. Already, a few of the older students who remembered him were looking fearfully his way, their eyes like the saucers on the table before them. They knew the smile, and they knew it meant mischief. Though he thought he'd checked himself in time, Artemis was dismayed to see Professor McGonagall glaring at him over the rims of her glasses.

"I certainly hope you're not causing trouble for our students again... Professor," she said flatly, hesitating on the last word as though it were a crime to speak it.

"Oh certainly not!" replied Artemis jovially, his eyes bright and his expression innocent. "I would never do such a thing to these precious students, you know me!"

"Yes, I do know you. That's what worries me."

OOC: Let's start again, skipping ahead a bit :) This gives some new people a chance to join *cough cough* ^^

Gina looked up to see what had caused the lull in conversation. The sixth- and seventh-year students sitting around her had suddenly gone silent, and right in the middle of a potentially interesting discussion concerning whether crocodiles and alligators were the same thing and, if not, how one might go about distinguishing them without getting one's hand chomped off.

The solutions they'd proposed had been getting steadily more absurd, and one of the seventh-year boys had been saying something about freezing charms and using McGonagall as bait-- Gina didn't know McGonagall, but she sounded like a prime pranking target-- when everyone just... stopped. They seemed much more interested in the dinners on their plates than alligators and crocodiles.

It seemed to have been caused by the student who was just passing the table. He looked to be one of the older students, probably a seventh year. Hm.

"Who's that?" she asked the sixth-year Ravenclaw sitting next to her.

The girl just shrugged and continued looking at her plate. "Artemis. Er, Professor Burton," was all she said.

Professor? No way. She laughed. "You are joking, right?" she said, when the girl didn't join her.

"No."

"But he's a kid! What's he teach?"

"Defense Against the Dark Arts."

Ah. Great. One of her favorite subjects was being taught by someone who looked like he'd just graduated last year. "What a bloody awful deal," she said, lowering her voice so she wouldn't be heard.

OOC:Eh, not a great post, but I gotta go... ><

At the far end of the Gryffindor table sat Victor, the usual sighting of which he could be found during dinner, along with his black cat, Elf. It had been his chosen seat for all his years at Hogwarts, and this year he liked it the most. Now that Artemis had became one with the staff, most of the Gryffindor and Hufflepuff student's sat further away from the edge closest to the staff table, but there Victor sat anyway.

Victor glanced about the room slowly, having become slightly bored with his food and slightly more interested in the students around him. Sadly, none of their conversations caught his ear, and no events caught his eye. Looking over to the staff table, he noticed Artemis and gave a soldier's salute to him. Victor only rarely gave this to those he respected, and Artemis was one of them, though he could be... a kid, at times. Victor couldn't quite find a fitting term, but it seemed best to use for now.

Turning to face his pet, Victor scratched Elf behind his ear, then gave him a scrap off his plate.

Etta was wolfing down food like a wolf, barely leaving her time t breathe. She glnced up when Artemis passed her table and narrowed her eyes at him.

How dare he come back to school. Idiot! What business does he have here? Teaching?! Ha... Etta was still sore about not being able to be top prankster for yet another year.

She heard someone talk about a new girl, and her head poked up. The bed next to her was empty now that Elise left. Perhaps she would have a roommate again? Unfortunately, she was too short to see over the heads. She shrugged and figured she would see her eventually.

She swalloed some milk and then check the mail her owl had brought her. Letter from mum, letter from dad, letter from Fred and George? She handed it to the boy next to her and told them to open it. They did so and little fireworks burst from the envelope covering the victim in a purple foam that would stick for at least an hour before falling off and crawling away.

"Thank you," Etta said snatching the letter back to read. It turned out that they had a new offer for her: 40% of prfits from her jokes and a Christmas bonus.

Artemis, while interesting enough, was quickly replaced as the focus of Gina's attention when one of the other kids let out an aggravated shout. He was, Gina saw, as she leaned forward to get a good look, coated in something roughly the color of the new skirt she'd bought a few days ago. (It was a pretty color, but it didn't exactly suit the poor boy. He had, she was certain, not chosen the color on purpose; still, it was mildly disturbing.)

The dark-haired girl sitting next to the boy seemed as though she'd been expecting this. Hm. Maybe I should go introduce myself, she thought. No sense alienating people, no sense at all.

"G'day, mate*," she said, smiling brightly. "I'm new here this year, and I was wondering whether you'd be so kind as to show me where the Ravenclaw dorms are after dinner? I just got here, and I haven't really had a chance to look around yet."

OOC:*Cliche. I know, I know. I just had to do it. Eventually, I plan to throw in a "Konnichiwa, mate!" too.

A frackus amongst some students caught Victor's attention. Glancing up, he sighted the now purple student and the many others laughing at him. It was funny of course, but Victor didn't laugh or smile. Jokes weren't his 'cup of tea' exactly, and he had had his share of them. Besides, if it weren't for a joking prankster years ago, he wouldn't have lost his eye.

'Nothing ever changes here... Too bad I've never got used to it.' He thought to himself with a sigh as he rested his cheek against the knuckles of his hand, which was propped up by his elbow.

Turning his sights to the two stained glass windows opposite the staff table, Victor spaced out as he became lost in thought once more.

OOC:Um... I believe the year's just started. If you'll actually read the posts that came before yours, you'll see that it's Artemis's first day teaching. No offense, but I don't think that makes it Christmas or anywhere near it.

OOC: Yes, unfortunately it is decidedly not Christmas, considering students arrived at the school last night.... You might also want to make sure you're talking about the same character throughout the post. On another note, Chris, I look forward to your liberal use of "mate"

Artemis feigned indignance at McGonagall's sarcasm admirably. His stone-faced senior was not impressed, of course -- she had seen it all in her many years of teaching, and no amount of acting could easily convince her. Still, she had to admit that he was up there with some of the best, though his "acting" was often tainted with purposely injected sarcasm. This time was no exception.

"I am injured seriously by your sarcasm, madam!" the young teacher responded with a frown. Professor McGonagall raised an eyebrow and opened her mouth to speak when the card exploded all over the poor Ravenclaw child.

"Oh for heaven's sake!" Artemis caught her suspicious glare, tossing his hands in the air innocently. She narrowed her eyes, then decided that he was being truthful for once. She looked to her left, but Professor Flitwick had already taken out his wand and with a gentle swish-and-flick had cleaned up the mess. Artemis watched with a mix of interest and annoyance: So this is what it means to be a teacher, he mused, Cleaning up other people's messes!

Stupid twins, I'm worth way more than that, Etta thought, tossing the letter aside. She was about to scarf down some more fish when she was interrupted by a "G'day, mate."

Have I gone 'down under?' Etta looked up and discovered she had to look way up to see who it was. It was a red-headed girl she had never seen before, and she concluded it had to be the new girl everyone was buzzing about.

"Sure, no problem. It would be my pleasure," the little prankster grinned impishly, and stood up. There was not much of a height difference between sitting down and standing up, and if anything she had become a bit shorter. "I ate my fill, so if you're done, we can get started."

OOC:Sorry bout' that, when Dan posted this storyboard under 'Uh... later', and that he put in OOC that we were 'skipping ahead a bit' I was thinking later on during the year on which we had already started. I just assumed that we were still on the same year. Oh well, I'm easily confused :P

And thx Dan for catching that, at first I was like 'Wtf is he talking about?' then I saw what ya meant. I'm getting old. :( *wrinkles*

And apologies for this OOC-only post, but I am blank as to what to post for Victor. :(

Melia Stahlflugel had been sitting alone, having made no friends yet in England, let alone at Hogwarts. She was feeling slightly homesick, and dying to talk in her native tongue.

Her ears pricked up and she snapped out of her daze when she heard the conversation between Gina and Etta. She said, quietly, "Excuse me..."

She cleared her throat, and then tried again. I'm not going to be helpless, she thought. Even better if I can get shown around with the other new girl.

"Excuse me, but I'm new, too... Can you show me around also, if that's not too much trouble?" Melia said, at normal loudness this time. They seem nice enough, she thought with a smile. Maybe we can be friends.

Nearby she heard snickering, and none-too-quiet whispers of "There's the mis-sort!" Melia almost wished she had been put in Hufflepuff, however embarrassing that would be, over being mis-sorted. She hated the negative attention she got sometimes.

Melia resolved to just ignore them, and, sure enough, they stopped after a while. But she knew that every time someone saw her in the hallway and asked a friend who she was, they'd wouldn't just say "The new student" but "The new student who got mis-sorted."

Melia earnestly hoped it wasn't a bad omen for the rest of the year.

Mis-sort? Well, she didn't know anything about that, but judging by the look on the girl's face, she did. Gina glanced around at the kids who were muttering, heat rising to her cheeks as she resisted the urge to tell them to shut the bloody hell up. Impolitic, perhaps, but she wasn't the cold sort of person who could sit by and watch as someone else took a beating, physical or not.

"Sure thing," she said, smiling warmly at the new girl and making a private resolution not to prank her, at least not for a while. Gina rarely took people under her wing; still, she liked this girl. Quiet, almost painfully shy-- and the poor thing's new. Can't really blame her. "I'm sure it's not too much trouble," she said, turning to Etta for confirmation. "She'll be apples,* don't you worry."

OOC:*"It'll turn out just fine."

Melia winced at the giggles behind her back. 'And she's got funny hair, too...'

Oh sweet mother of God, that too? She thought, smacking herself on the forehead. Even if I told them it's a family trait they still probably wouldn't shut their faces...

Melia sighed, and smiled. "Thank you so much. By the way, my name's Stahlflugel, Melia Stahlflugel. I came here from Belgium. Where are you from...?" She directed the last question at Gina.

"'Stralia," she replied offhandedly, then glanced at the girls who were giggling behind Melia. "Wish that lot'd rack off, don't you?" A grin brightened her face, her annoyance momentarily forgotten. "Sorry-- never introduced myself, did I? Haha, where'd my manners get off to, then? Name's Gina." She cocked her head to one side. "Belgium, huh? Never been there. Your folks move or somethin'?"

"Belgium, Australia, sheesh! Is there an exchange program I don't know about?" Etta grinned. "Well, since we're exchanging names, mine's Etta. We still have sometime before curfew, I can show you around the castle a bit." She picked up her bag and slung it over her shoulder.

"Follow me!" She said walking out of the Great Hall with a bounce in her step.
