It didn't look like it was going to go anywhere anytime soon. She sighed, and started to walk out of the Great Hall.
"Come on, Dizzy," she muttered. "we can't be late for-" She glanced at her schedule, and groaned. "Defense against the Dark Arts!? Great... just great." She had to show up to her first class covered in goo, and to make matters worse, Artemis was teaching the class!! She was considering skipping class, but shrugged and decided to act as if nothing had happened. She held her head high as if it was completely natural to be covered in the green, sticky substance was completely natural. She looked over her shoulder, and rolled her eyes at Dizzy. She turned back to him and grabbed the cuff of his robes, and then she started going to Defense Against the Dark Arts at a brisk pace. "Hurry up! We'll be late!" she said impatiently as she dragged him up a flight of stairs before they could switch again. Etta hesitated at the door to take a breath before she stepped inside still clutching Disino's robe. "Good morning, everyone!" she smiled, and took her seat. She glanced around the classroom to see a few people snicker behind their hands. Etta only smirked as she memorized who they were, so she could stick something gross into their dinner that night. In the end, she would have the last laugh. |

He was fairly certain it was not going to come out in the near future, and it had glued many of his books to the inside of the bag. He sighed at Etta dragged him into the classroom and allowed himself to lead to his seat. He noted a particular Slytherin named Parkers he would have to have a little talk with after class, he hadn't missed the small Blast Pebble the self-proclaimed Prankster Prince had put in his robe pocket as he passed by. Once in his seat, he pulled it from his pocket and cast a freezing charm over it and rolled it toward Parkers. Dizzy smiled as it came to a sure stop right under Parkers' chair. This would be an interesting class period, James decided at length. |

Artemis glanced at a large, gnarled clock on the wall opposite his desk. It was time for classes to start. He glanced to his right and through the wall into his classroom -- he'd bewitched it thus so that he could keep track on his students even while he was procrastinating in his office, which he suspected he would be doing often. Surprisingly enough, everyone appeared to be on time. That is, everyone except for -- Artemis glanced at his class list quickly -- a certain Mark Flemming. According to the notes taken directly on his roster, Flemming was a notorious slacker who barely passed his classes, despite his seemingly strong intellect, and who had a greater than average dis-respect for authority. He was, surprisingly, a Gryffindor. The young teacher tapped his chin, deciding to play this one by ear. Just as the young Mr. Flemming had crossed the treshold into Artemis' class, the young teacher flicked his wand towards the door, all the while safely behind the walls. The door, despite its obvious mass, flew shut with frightening speed, slamming loudly into its frame with an ear-splitting WHAM!. At that precise moment, the door to Artemis' office, which had been bewitched to appear no different than the walls surrounding it, so long as it was closed, flew open with the same intensity. Artemis emerged from his chambers. He moved swiftly, whipping out his wand and pointing it at the frightened Flemming, who had stopped dead in his tracks in the middle of the classroom. "STUPEFY!" shouted the young teacher clearly and crisply. Instantly, a jet of red light shot from the tip of his wand and struck Flemming square between the eyes. The young by fell over, stunned. Artemis sighed and walked over to the boy, clearly disappointed. He then turned and addressed the class. "Clearly, he was not prepared to use magic in the real world. Had I been an actual assailant, he would be dead. As you surely noticed, I audibly spoke the incantation, which should have given him plenty of time to react. In the real world, someone of real danger will not give you that luxury. If nothing else, I intend to prepare all of you to defend yourself from such villains -- hopefully before the end of the semester. You will learn to react quickly and to cast spells without even opening your mouth. For example." Artemis looked down and flicked his wand towards the boy who lay at his feet. Suddenly, he was conscious, and slowly, groggily rose to his feet and headed towards his seat. "Five points from Gryffindor -- if you plan to be late to my class, be prepared," he said in a lowered voice to the boy." "Now, so that I don't give up all hope in this class," the young teacher continued after Mark found his seat, "Who can tell me a simple spell that Mark could have used to defend himself with?" Victor answered quickly, though it looked as if he were answering to no one. His jade eye remained at his desk as he went into explanation. For surely the teacher would want to know why, and if not, the students would then know the answer. "Using that spell in time to counter would cancel it out before it could reach you."
Clearing his throat slightly, and giving off a cough, he continued, "If he had seen your wand, he should have used 'Expelliarmus' to disarm you. Obviously with your wand drawn, you can be a threat as well as you are helpful. Given the situation, that is. It would be a good tip to stay on defense in this class either way." Victor gave off a shrug, and closed his eye for a moment as he finished, "That's what I would have done, at least." |

Not only would I have protected myself, but I would have also rebounded the attack right back at my opponent." Turning her head slightly in the direction of Victor, she continued. "Really, how could he have possibly used Ennervate if he had already been under the effects of Stupefy? That's right, he couldn't. His only bet would have been to attack before Artemis did.
So, in short, Ennervate is fairly useless. Unless, that is, you're having a friend use it on you." When she had finished, the exchange student sunk back into her chair, resting her elbows upon the edge of the desk as she waited to see if her answer was feasible. Even if her work ethic was less than that of even the laziest student, Elise took pride in what extensive spell knowledge she did have. |

She laid her head down on her desk and yawned when Victor and Elise started rambling on about counterspells. Then she sat up a little and rested her chin on one of her hands.
"A person could duck as well, if they were quick enough," Etta said. "That would give him or her time enough to nail their assailent with a good hex." She shrugged with a small half-smile. "It's not a spell, but it could work." The little prankster ran her hand over the top of her head, and to her surprise it wasn't gooey and sticky! She looked at her hand and then down at her robes to find that the green goo was beginning to evaporate in streams of green steam. Wicked... she thought to herself. |

Although the man did impress Pollux with his out of the classroom wisdom, he was still widely known as the school slacker. Then again, Anthony wound up late for class now and then but he preferred to be punctual unless something important had risen to stop him; he always had a good reason, at least for himself.
Anthony silently slipped beside the door to listen in on what was happening within. Sounded like someone had been Stupefied, Flemming most likely. Still, it was really nothing important yet and so class would need a little... enlivening. Anthony took two and half steps backwards, making sure not to fumble the three potions he was juggling, and then kicked the door in. Thankfully, Pollux had thought to unfasten the door before smashing it open with a resounding crack. Pollux strode into the classroom, looking drowsy while potions leaped from one hand to another. Sure enough, there was Flemming, still as a rock. Meanwhile, it looked like he was being observed by the rest of the class. "Hmm...Sorry about being late. Some business popped up and it's hard for me to balance my dealings and hall navigation," Anthony anounced nonchalantly "Oh and if anyone is thinking about stopping the juggling, I would recommend against it; this is very important and I don't think I can stop without something weird happening" |

Artemis glanced curiously at this student who was waltzing in late as though he owned the place. The young teacher vaguely recognized the boy from earlier, and took a peek at his class list. His eyebrows immediately rose in recognition. It was none other than Anthony Pollux, apparently somewhat of a genius with potions. Artemis himself had never been that great at potions, but doubted that the juggling was all too important. He didn't care to take any risks, however, and instead flicked his wand silently at the jars. Instantly, the rose swiftly from the boy's dextrous hands, and continued the juggling pattern in mid-air. His wand still raised, Artemis motioned for the boy to find his seat. "Your lucky I've already had a demonstration volunteer, Pollux," said Artemis irritably. "I'll let you off easier since, if I recall, you tend not to be late, but still -- eight points from Slytherine." Artemis paused, looking back to the rest of the class with an expression that seemed to show he was trying to remember what had happened. "Ah yes. I shall respond in the order the suggestions came, if you don't mind. Victor, you are only barely correct. Ennervate only revives a person once they have fallen, and thus Mark could most certainly not have defended himself with it. Also, as Elise mentioned, he certainly couldn't have awoken himself with it either." The young teacher paused, smiling slightly and allowing a tiny ripple of chuckles to return to the classroom. "As for your suggestion of disarming me, that is partially correct. That would defend him, to be sure, but I was asking about what he could have done before, during, or after I cast the spell. "Elise, you are absolutely correct. A strong Protego spell can save your life, and is, in fact, one of my favorite dueling spells." He winked at her and continued: "Glad to see you're keeping up with your spells, though this shouldn't be too hard for anyone." Artemis noted Victor's difficulty with the question, and guessed that it had to do with why he was in a class with those in a year below him. Not missing a beat, Artemis turned and began to pace in front of the class before he continued on to Etta's idea. "Ducking is also quite a good idea," Artemis said happily. "Most students probably wouldn't think to suggest it, but it is most certainly a good idea, and, in most cases, a natural response which can also save your life. However, this isn't a luxury which the old and decrepid have, so at some point in your life, it behooves you to learn something like Protego. "Now that we've gotten the necessary bit of instruction out of the way, we have some time for discussion before returning to mindless academia again," the young teacher said with a smile. He vaguely sensed a general gasp of surprise and gladness from the class -- nobody expected a NEWT level course to have any "chill time," even with Artemis Burton as the teacher, especially with the entrance he made. "I would first like everyone to know that, despite my history, I shall be doing my best to leave the students and... er... (most of) the faculty alone and prank-free, which means every one of you lot should do the same. Though I should really be impartial in my punishments, I will most certainly be extra-harsh if I am the target of the prank. And, since I am a teacher now, those of you with thoughts of revenge had better stuff 'em away right now. "That being said, if I deem some spell-work particularly creative or skillful -- whether in a prank or some sort of class project-thing -- I just might offer some bonus points. And believe me, you'll need it. Of course, I will probably still have to give you some horrible torture or take a few billion points from your house, but -- hey, at least you're passing my class, right? Again, this doesn't apply to pranks aimed at me, nor does it apply when said prank or spell-work harms someone, interferes with their work, or otherwise could get me in trouble of anyone thinks I sanctioned it. You may hear 'good spell-work in prank = A in Burton's class,' but my official policy is 'any prank = scrubbing out a pool caked with troll dung by hand.' Now, I guess I'll open the floor to serious questions and suggestions. Be prepared to be severely beaten -- er, that is to say, ignored -- if your question is something pointless, like 'Why are you so cool, Professor Burton?' As everyone knows, the answer to that is 'because someone had to be, and I was obviously the best candidate.'" When he stopped speaking, he was smiling happily at the class, his eyes shining as though he were laughing on the inside. |

Her eyebrow's raised in surprise when Artemis started talking about pranks. The little prankster's expression was shocked and slightly hurt, clearly saying, 'Prank? Prank? Ha! Never?! I don't even know the meaning of the word! I would nevr dream of it!'
Only amatuers would fess up to a prank for a few points, she thought to herself. Besides, passing your class wouldn't be worth it. I prank because I love to... and your not that cool... Even if you are amazingly hot, said another voice mockingly. Shut up, Etta thought grumpily. But he is, retorted her conscience. So? Etta began doodling on her paper absent-mindedly. Without really realizing what she was doing, she raised her hand. "Professor?" Ugh! Etta cringed inwardly. That sounds so weird! It seems like yesterday I was putting hopping powder (my own invention) in his seventh year robes. It was so cute how you tried to get his attention, laughed her conscience. Shut up! "Professor," she continued. "Don't you need to know who the prankster is before you give them their points? You don't really expect a student to admit to breaking the rules for a chance to pass your class, do you?" |

At the same time, he watched his experiments rise from his hands and turn cartwheels in the air around his head. At first, Anthony had tried to grab the rising potions, but thought better of it before his hands closed on any of them. If he stopped any of those three potions in their tracks, he could be risking his own health. Better to wait.
Pollux took his seat and slumped into it as usual. Looking around from the corners of his eyes, he spotted several familiar sights. Everyone he had associated (more or less) with on the train was here. Fortunate, Anthony mused, very fortunate. Suddenly, Anthony felt something, like a baby dragon breathing down his neck: stifling and disturbing. Confused and alarmed, Anthony whipped his head around...and immediatly wished he had not. There was Rosemary, smiling and batting her eyes. Anthony replied by rolling his own and turning forward to watch his airborne experiments and to make it look like he was paying some amount of attention. This would be another long year in the life... |

Artemis' eyes gleamed mischeviously when he heard Etta ask the question. He was expecting the question -- he had assumed that at least someone would be smart enough to think of that. After all, it was a NEWT-level course. The young teacher laced his fingers together behind his back, and walked slowly towards Etta's side of the room. "As a matter of fact," Artemis said, his voice reflecting the mischeif in his eyes, "I do intend people to admit their wrongdoings. Firstly, because this class will be hard. I don't expect many people will pass without me curving your grades. Because this class is so important to your survival in the wizarding world, I will expect nothing less than perfection. That being said, I do anticipate that everyone will pass with the highest marks on the NEWT tests. And, when you do -- not 'if' -- I just might do something special for you, of your choice." The young teacher paused, standing up straight and examining a far corner of the room where the walls met the ceiling. "Of course, the second reason is that if I find out who did it, the punishment will be many, many times worse." He spoke this last sentance uncharacteristically morbidly, as though threatening death -- or worse."He paused again, allowing his words to sink in. He then continued, just as jovially as ever: "Well, now that that's out of the way, how about some class time? I would like you all to take out your books... and throw them against the far wall." Artemis paused yet again, a grin creaping upon his face. "Yes, fling them as hard as you can. Break the bindings if you can -- you won't need those stupid things. When you have it good and flung, I want you to summon it back to you using a simple spell -- Accio perhaps. However, you may not speak. Allow me to demonstrate." With those words, the young teacher took out his wand and swished it upwards, summoning a book out of thin air, which he caught in his left hand. He then proceeded to throw it at the far wall, which it soon hit with a sickening SMACK! before it fell to the floor, rumpled and torn. Artemis then pointed his wand towards the book, and flicked it slightly, causing it to fly back towards him. He then caught it, and turned to the class, tossing it mindlessly over his shoulder. "See? Easy! Or not. I guess you'll find out!" OOC: see? I'm not TOTALLY stealing snape's lesson! |

You won't get me to confess my wrong doings, Artemis Burton, she vowed silently. I'll pass your class without those points, and without getting caught.
Suddenly, the pranksters green eyes were flickering happily and mischievously like they normally did. It was getting warm in the classroom, so she slipped out of her black robe, leaving her in the Howarts' uniform, and draped it over the back of her seat. She bent over, took her book out of her bag, she cocked her head and glanced at the professor curiously as if to say, 'Are you serious?' With a final sigh, Etta hurled the book at the wall. It hit the far wall with a resounding CRACK! and the small student winced as she remembered the price she had to pay. Books weren't cheap, especially school books. Etta had to stand up on her knees in her chair to see her book lying in a defeated heap of paper on the floor. She slipped the wand out of her bun, allowing her ebony hair cascade down her back, and pointed it at her book. "Blue panties don't suit you, Fairwood," hissed someone behind her. Etta's face glowed red with embarrassment, which quickly gave way to anger as she realized who it was. She didn't turn around, she didn't need to. Parkers, that pervert from Slytherine, had taken the seat next to the little prankster, and when she turned to find her book, he sneaked a peek under her skirt. Stupid skirts were not long enough! Her green eyes burned with an angry gold fire, and she flicked her wand slightly. Her book was soon airborne and it hurtled across the room leaving a trail of pages behind it. Etta ducked at the last second, and the book whizzed past the top of her head and SMACK! right into Parker's nose. the force knocked the Slytherine right out of his seat and onto the floor with her book next to him. Gasps rose from the class and a few girls screamed. That's funny, she thought with a tiny satisfied smirk. I was expecting a hollow sound... Parkers cried out in pain, and started spouting the most colorful string of phrases Etta had ever heard. She saw the blood dripping down his chin and onto his robes. It wasn't a pretty sight. "OMIGOSH!! Parkers!!!" Etta gasped, she leapt out of her seat and knelt down besides the fallen pervert. "I am so sorry!!! Are you ok??? Of course you aren't, you're bleeding. Really, I can't express how sorry I am. It was an accident, I lost control and well... you got hit in the nose. I'm so sorry!! Accidents happen, y'know." She looked like she was near tears as she started mopping up Parkers' face with his robes as he attempted to beat her off by flailing his free arm. Etta was fighting back tears, tears of laughter. She had heard that he had gotten a "new nose" over the summer. The small student hoped it wasn't expensive. |

As blood poured from the cretin's nose, Dizzy threw his book into the wall and watched as it crumpled into a useless heap on the floor. It vaguely reminded him off Parker's face at the moment. It was satisfying. Although Dizzy had been sitting too far to hear what Parkers had said to Etta, it was clearly something that had angered her enough to break his nose.
"Good shot," he mouthed silently when she looked his way. Grinning, he pulled his own book back to him without saying a word. |

| Vern_5 Joined: 31 May 2005 Posts: 212 | Anthony was already dragging his broken book back into his hands when a fight erupted on the other side of the room. Anthony peered across with mild interest only to receive a less-than-surprise. Etta again. Dizzy as well; he could sneak a trap in the wink of an eye but a wink was more than enough for Anthony to analyze and retrack any and all movements made as long as his eyes were open. Of the many skills taught to him by his heritage of thievery, tracking was one of his finest.
Still, as unsurprising as Etta's involvement in a fist-fight was, it was something to watch. Speaking of watches, Anthony reflected, the Slytherin behind him would need a new one. As Anthony quickly stashed the watch into his pocket with one hand, he suddenly noticed that his other one was warmly immobilized. He turned his head to investigate and their was Rosemary, staring him in the face, clutching his hand and smiling weakly. At this point, the natural reaction would be to cry out in shock but that was quickly smothered by terrifying curiosity: what had happened to the student who had just been sitting beside him? Anthony quickly ripped his hand out of Rosemary's grasp and waved it in the air. "I'm wondering, sir. What kind of exercise is this? I can see that most if not every student in here can perform silenced magic so wouldn't it be more productive to try out more potent spellwork?" he stated. "Perhaps a decent repulsion spell?" he continued while trying to edge away from Rosemary. |
