Name: Marguerite Rose Kearney; known generally as "Marc Kearney"

Age: 24

Alliance: Pirates

Description:

A renowned swordfighter, Marguerite much prefers the blade to the bullet. She can't aim a gun quickly or very accurately, but once there's a sword in her hand, there are few who can match her skills, let alone top them. She's always been little; had she grown up in high society, this wouldn't have been a problem. However, she's been masquerading as a boy for years now, and is often a target for larger, bullying drunkards. So she's learned to fight hand-to-hand as well, for those times when she hasn't got her sword with her.

She used to keep her dark hair cropped short to help her disguise herself as "Marc Kearney," a male pirate-- who, being male, didn't have to face the problems that a woman would have to deal with when trying to get onto a ship. Now, though, she's let it grow longer, and keeps it braided and bound, as many of her fellow pirates do. She's not terribly vain, but keeping her hair has become like a private sort of rebellion for her.

Practicality is key for Marguerite. She has little patience for sentimentality and tends to ridicule those who do. She also becomes easily annoyed when dealing with those obsessed with honor and courage; she's seen enough of the world to know that shooting a man in the back is often a perfectly viable alternative to an honorable duel, and is also much less likely to get you killed. (Of course, she's careful in deciding who should and should not be killed. It's not that she despises killing or places immense value on human life, but she's learned that a man whose life you spare is often likely to return the favor. She has "debts" to collect from many people, and they've come through for her more than once.)

Aside from treasure, the thing Marguerite most wants is her late father's pride and joy: the Desert Rose. ("Bloody stupid name for a ship, but it's my ship, so shut up.") She's heard it said that a ship is freedom, but she's worked on ships all her life and has come to the conclusion that ships and freedom are only the same if you're the one in charge. Being able to go where you want, when you want--that, to her, is freedom.

Sadly, her journeys have yet to lead her to her father's ship. In the meantime, she contents herself with pirating and treasure hunting. Though opinionated, arrogant, and a little sarcastic, she’s not actively mean-spirited, and people usually find her easy to get along with, even if she’s a little incomprehensible. Few people know who she is or what she’s after; she does her job and she does it well and, usually, that’s all anyone really cares about.

Although she can generally keep a level head under dangerous circumstances that might have others in a blind panic, Marguerite is easily thrown off-balance by any potentially awkward situation. Usually, of course, she can deal with these situations as a male would—make a crude joke and move on to another topic—however, occasionally awkwardness will present itself, with no clear way of getting out. While she can look death in the eye without so much as blinking, Marguerite is quickly reduced to incoherent stammering when faced with other… difficult circumstances. Her tendency to read too far into things doesn’t help.

Marguerite doesn’t concern herself much with how she looks, as long as she looks male. Her clothing is simple and a little baggy, to hide her figure. She wears a key on a cord around her neck; it’s her most cherished possession, because it once belonged to her great-grandfather. (She’s not keeping it out of sentimentality, of course. She’s just hoping that rich old great granddaddy left a big pile of gold in a chest somewhere.)

History:

Marguerite’s mother, Rose, was a dark-skinned beauty from a far-off desert land. She was working as a prostitute when she met James Kearney, a young pirate who had recently stumbled upon a large pile of treasure. The two fell in love and were married aboard Kearney’s brand-new ship, the Desert Rose, named for the love of his life.

Six months later, Marguerite was born aboard that same ship. Her early years were spent entirely at sea, learning to sail. She got along well with the crew, who respected her father and affectionately dubbed her “Li’l Cap’n Margo.” First Mate Billy Phillips, her father’s longtime friend, was especially fond of her, and taught her how to fight with a sword. He was a good teacher, and she was soon dueling members of the crew, and winning. She loved the sea and the freedom it brought; she would have liked nothing more than for things to remain exactly as they were.

Unfortunately, life has a way of changing when you least want it to. When Marguerite was thirteen, James Kearney (who had, by this time, become rather infamous) was caught by the Navy at a port city and hanged. Rose and Marguerite returned to the docks, both heartbroken, only to find that the Desert Rose was no longer there. Billy Phillips, believing the entire Kearney family to be dead, had sailed away in an effort to save the rest of the crew. Perhaps he felt guilty for taking over, or perhaps he just couldn’t stand to see the place where his friend had been killed; either way, he never returned to that city.

Back on the streets, Rose was forced to resort to prostitution again. She encouraged Marguerite to steal that she needed to survive. They lived this way for three years, sleeping under a bridge and often going for days without a proper meal.

When she was sixteen, she found out that her mother had arranged for her to join the crew of Neptune’s Blade, a pirate ship with a rough crew and a violent captain. She cut her hair, took the name “Marc,” and went eagerly; she would not turn her nose up at a place to sleep and regular meals. And she was back at sea, which made everything seem a little better.

After three years of this, Marguerite escaped to join another crew. She stayed there for a few months, then quit and joined another. This has gone on for years, her impressive swordfighting skills helping her to get hired for crew after crew—“Aye, from ship to bloody ship-- but I’ll find one I like soon enough. She’s called the Desert Rose.”

Miscellaneous:

Marguerite hates parrots. She swears up and down that her old friend, Roberta, got her eye pecked out once. She also fears sharks, believing that the same friend was eaten by one at a later time.

OOC:EDIT: added a paragraph in the description about her complete inability to handle awkward situations.

Haha, if you still want a place on Frost's ship, you've got it. She's just different enough from him to make it interesting, and similar enough to make them work well together.

Aye, she be approved!

Haha, the first time Jenny and "Marc" meet, Jenny's going to lean over and whisper, "I know." xD;;

Or something.

Hey, thinking about making Jenny the captain of her own ship--a rival for Jack Frost :D
So you're welcome aboard there, too, if I do that. :)

...Now we need some privateers and government peeps, and we'll be set xD

Noooooo-- XDDD "Marc"'s really good at being a boy. She's had ten years of practice. So girls are harder to trick, but she can totally still do it. She could trick her own mother, if she thought it was worth the effort to go find her and stuff. XD

I'd be glad to join Jenny's ship, except that I think Dan's right... She and Frost'd be really funny trying to work on the same ship. XDDD
