James shot up in his bed suddenly, startling Charon, who had curled up at his feet. He hissed and clawed at Dizzy's foot.

"Ouch!" he said, grabbing Charon and petting him to calm him down. He had been rudely awakened by extremely loud shouting. Something about a student out of bed. It had sounded like Peeves. He had only caught a few words, like "STUDENT OUT OF BED!" and "WEE WIDDLE TROUBLE-MAKER" and such things. Dizzy slapped a palm into his forehead. Peeves resevered that particular title for one person: Etta Fairwood. No doubt she was roaming the corridors and annoyed Peeves again...Dizzy pet Charon a few more times and grabbed a pen and some paper. He quickly scratched out a few words on a note.

"Etta:

Peeves raised quite a racket. Every teacher or student in the vicinity would have heard his yelling. I heard as i passed McGonagall that she had given the "night watch" to Artemis. Be extremely careful. He's not likely to have forgotten that amusing little potion you gave him on his last year. He's clever too, he'll probably take the same secret passages you'll take. Don't let him actually catch you. Stun him or something if he becomes too much of a problem.

Only joking on that last bit, but seriously, watch yourself.

Dizzy."

Having finished his note, he tied it to Charon's collar. Charon didn't seem to like this much, as he knew what was coming next. He pawed at the paper a few times before Dizzy spoke.

"Charon, sniff out Etta and bring that too her, and then get back here quickly. Go!" he whispered. Charon took off like a shot and followed his nose. Upon nearing the portrait of the witch, he paused as he saw Artemis stick his wand up her nose. As he leaped through, Charon swiftly followed. He came to the trophy room and went through the front as Artemis was sealing the other doors. Charon took a few more sniffs, and galloped across the trophy room and meowled as he jumped onto the table, landing right in front of Etta.

"What the-?" Etta jumped back slightly as the cat landed on the table. "Charon? What are you doing here? I thought you were at the vet." Charon glared at her for saying the "v-word," and flicked his tail in annoyance. Etta laughed softly and started to scratch him behind the ears. Her fingertips brushed a piece of paper, and she frowned slightly. "Hn? What do you have?" She placed the cat in her lap, handed him a treat, and found the note in his collar. After she freed the note from his collar, she unfolded it, and skimmed over it. The note contained very little information she did not already know, but it was the thought that count. Dizzy was sweet, and a better friend could not be found anywhere.

"You better be kidding about that last part," Etta muttered as she fished out a quill and scribbled a quick note.

Dizzy,

Thanks for the warning. Sorry if I woke you. Don't worry about me; I'll be fine.

Forever,
Etta

"There you go," Etta slipped it into the cat's collar who seemed eager to get away. He leapt out of her lap and darted out of the room. "No where were we?" she asked, turning back to Anthony.

Anthony stared at Etta for a moment, silently watching her face for any signs. For one thing, she seemed inertly distressed about something, aprehensive or otherwise. Anthony's eyes scanned the Trophy room but he did not find anything out of the ordinary, so what had her on her toes? Not something the cat had brought, was it? She had not bothered to fill him in on what was happening.

"Well, here's the recipe but you'll have to sign on the back along with your offer; standard procedure, you see," Anthony said as he slid the copy to Etta. "If you hold it for too long without signing it, the thing will crumble in a cloud of dust; something dad taught me. Also, if anyone else touches it it wil destroy itself. Do you understand these conditions?"

"Perfectly," Etta said as she picked up the piece of parchment in her hands. Her eyes swept over it quickly before she turned it over and wrote that she wouldn't play any pranks on Anthony for half the school year, and then signed her name. She felt like she was signing her soul away to the Dark Lord. She showed Anthony what she had written.

"Ok, then," the prankster folded it gently and tucked it into one on the many pockets in her robes along with her quill. "The deed is done. You are almost completely prank free for half the school year." And then I'll turn your skin glow-in-the-dark orange, Etta added silently and she couldn't help but smirk a bit.

Suddenly, that feeling from the owlery returned, and her skin was instantly covered in goosebumps. Her face became serious, almost frightened, and she shivered. What is that?

Fear...cold fear and aprehension flowed into Anthony's world. His muscles tensed under his jacket. What was this, what was happening!? Following what he knew from his monster book, Anthony looked for his breath and strived to sense a chill. Neither were apparent. That being said, there was no dementor.

"You feel that?" Anthony whispered coldly, expecting the worst of everything in one moment.

Etta nodded, her eyes wide with unmasked fear. "This isn't the first time," she whispered. "I felt it in the owlery earlier... What is it?" She sorely wished that Charon had stayed, so she could hold onto him close for comfort. Instead she made do with clasping her hands together until her knuckles turned white. Unlike the last time, the feeling of dread stayed with her.

"Anthony," she hissed. "If this is one of your wierd potions, I'll kill you."

Artemis felt it too, and it was growing closer. Frowning, he pulled his wand out once more, whisking it about at the last remaining entrance and casting a quick, but very neat charm upon it. When opened, the people inside would be greated by an imperterbable wall, a note upon which would read:

Sorry, for your own safety. Enjoy your stay, but not too much!

Hugs and kisses,
Artemis

He allowed himself a soft chuckle as he padded silently down the hall towards where he felt the disturbance. It was certainly no type of charm or hex, and while he admitted to being no sort of potions expert (he never cared for the practical and conventional uses for these strange concoctions, only what could enliven a prank) he would have bet that it was not caused by any sort of magical mixture. That left one option -- some sort of creature. Dementors were out, such a thing was far too obvious and would not be found this far anyway -- they never strayed far from Azkaban. Few other creatures that Artemis knew of could bring about this sort of chill, although one in particular would probably have a chilling sort of effect such as this. The young teacher wondered how this creature could have even gotten onto the grounds, much less into Hogwarts itself. Though his first reaction was to seek help from someone, a thought dawned upon him -- he was now that Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher that he thought to seek, and Dumbledore would probably question his choice of teacher if he discovered that Artemis was afraid to tackle a Kairos.

With this thought propelling him, Artemis' steps became lighter and quicker. Artemis briefly tried to recall what exactly the Kairos did when he realized he was facing it. At present it appeared more like a floating mass of water than anything else. Now he remembered what he'd read, wishing he'd read further. Though it couldn't do much in its normal form, somewhat like a Boggart, it fed off negative thoughts to build for itself a corporeal form. Though his skill with Occlumency was not nearly as good, perhaps, as Professor Snape's, it was more than enough to prevent any thoughts he might have from reaching it. He supposed now was as good a time was ever to figure out the best way to deal with a Kairos.

OOC: um... jer, if you can help out and shoot me an email at admin AT silverhearts DOT net with a better description of these things and ways to deal with them that would and would not work, i'd really appreciate it. DONT use the "email" link, as i dont know if that email box works anymore. Why don't I change it? Well....

"Okay, this is definitely NOT one of my potions," Anthony snarled. "Hmm...on second thought..." he reflected before quickly wiping the notion from his mind that he had possibly created whatever was effecting them.

Anthony rose from his gelatinous seat, doused it and the table with a drop from another, greener potion, causing the furniture to evaporate. But, he left Etta with her seat, prefering not to enrage her lest she fall.

"I think we should leave," said Anthony as he moved towards the exit. Whatever this was, it was freaking him; Anthony did not like to feel fear, or much of anything else for that matter. This was just another rude interuption in his dealings...

"I am in complete agreement," Etta said, rubbing her arms nervously as she followed Anthony. The prankster didn't know why she was afraid, and the scared her even more. She opened the door and froze. It took a moment for the message to register because she was freaked out of her mind, but when it did, she snapped.

"Blast it all, Artemis," she said furiously as her little feet angrily kicked the wall. "Why can't you just mind your own business?" She muttered angrily, and blasted it with her wand. The attack simply bounced off the seal, and ricoheted off the walls before it broke a vase. She then started to pull aside tapestries, lift rugs and peek beind shelves. However, none of the secret passageways she used were there!!

"Reparo," she mutter angrily, and the vase reparied itself. Then Etta blasted it apart again. After repairng and breaking the vase a few more times, her anger subsided, and she used her wand to hold up her bun. She looked at the ceiling thoughtfully. "Anthony, her voice was unusually calm. "You don't think... he locked that... that thing in here with us... do you?"

"Well, I don't see anything," said Anthony. Then he was buffeted with fear anew. "On the other hand, it feels like something is in here. Something...creepy. It's like being near a dementor. But this is different..."

Anthony reeled as bullets of sweat arched his brow and slipped past his mouth. Eyes twitched, following slight motions in the dark, reflections off of the trophies.

"I'd like to look on the bright side; this would be the perfect time to find out whatever this thing is," said Anthony. "After all, could just be a ghost... a bizarre fear inducing specter..."

"I've decided that I don't like the bright side very much," Etta shivered violently, so hugged herself tightly, but she wasn't cold and she continued to tremble. "It doesn't seem to be a very friendly ghost, does it?" She jumped three feet in the air when she saw something move out of the corner of her eye. "Th-This is g-g-getting ridiculous," she stammered when she realized that it was just her shadow.

Etta felt terrible. Never in her entire life had she been so scared. She'd gladly have detention with Snape for the whole year rather then be in this situation. Filch was starting to look like a gaurdian angel. She sank to her knees, and fought back tears. "Anthony..." she said meekly. "I'm scared..."

Anthony felt hopeless. He did not like this feeling, but for once he had to say, he was out of options. Anthony quickly shook the thought from his head; he always had options, he could always flee a bind. He was, after all, a Pollux.

"Look for any way to get out of here before whatever it is overtakes us. There has to be at least one way to get out. I mean, Artemis wouldn't seal all the exits..." Anthony started with dark realization. "Would he?"

No, even if he had Anthony could escape. And he had the girl to think about too. He couldn't leave her here.

"Um," Anthony whispered as he made to seek an exit. "If you aren't worried about a appearing in front of Dumbledore's office, I do have a recall potion on me. I set up it's recall point last year to get out of spending too much time with my fellow Slytherins"

"I wouldn't put it past him," Etta stared at her feet hard as she tried to think of an exit she might have missed. She used a trophy case to help her to her feet and walked over to a large trophy on a stand. After she turned it a quarter turn to the left. Nothing happened. Etta sighed. That had been her last hope.

She looked up at Anthony with her bright green eyes. "Pollux, if you have a way to get us out of here. Please use it before I go insane."

After what felt like an inordinate amount of time, though in actuallity it was probably only a minute or so, Artemis experienced what some may call a "duh" moment. He slapped the palm of his hand to his face when he realized how simple it was to deal with this thing at its current stage in its progression towards a corporeal form. The resemblance of its present form to a liquid was uncanny and, in Artemis' mind, not to be overlooked. Though as he thought about it he seemed to recall reading an answer such as the one he presently concocted, he wondered if perhaps this was just his mind playing tricks on him. Deciding not to risk making it leave by verbally speaking the incantation, he decided it was best to recite it nonverbally instead. In one swift motion, he raised his wand towards the floating mass and thought in his mind the word, Tergeo! In that instant, the liquidy mass that was, at present, the Kairos flew into the tip of Artemis' wand. Artemis stuck up his nose as he thought of having this thing going into his wand, though he doubted it was actually "inside," and fished about inside his robes to come up with a small jar. Holding his wand between his teeth, he opened the jar quickly and set it upon the ground, holding the lid at the ready. He then knelt down next to it and took his wand from his mouth. Never really cared for the taste of wood, Artemis thought to himself. He placed the tip of his wand inside the jar and swirled it about slowly, watching the liquid pool about the bottom of the jar. When it was gone, he quickly placed the lid upon it and tapped it with his wand. A "hiss" emitted from the edges of the lid as it was magically sealed, and the glass became black. That should keep the thing safely stored, the young teacher thought as he stood up, replacing the jar and straightening his robes.

As Artemis strode happily down the halls back towards the trophy room, he hummed a rather happy tune as it finally hit him that he was out of bed past curfew, and could not get in trouble for it. He even smiled and waved as the Bloody Baron passed him, an act which caused the ghost to look at him with interest and confusion, as few students outside of Slytherin house ever walked by him pleasantly, much less smiling and waving. When he finally arrived at the trophy room, he decided to have a bit of fun. A bit more, perhaps, than he should have had, considering the trauma which those inside were experiencing, though the young teacher did not know it. With a mischevious look upon his face, he took out his wand and tapped lightly upon the last door, the only one whose presence was still known to the occupants. As he did, he stepped back slightly so that he could not be seen from the other side of the doorway until those inside passed through it. On the inside, the wall swiftly returned to its normal state as a door. Not long after, the handle slowly turned, and the door inched open, ever-so slowly, creaking ominously as it did so. Meanwhile, Artemis took a few silent steps backwards, so as to pretend he'd just arrived when they (hopefully) came screaming out of the room.

Anthony looked at Etta in her desperation and decided there was not much he could do but use the potion. However, just as he pulled it from his coat, something changed. He had stopped sweating profusely for one thing and he felt slightly better about his position in this world.

"Hey, something doesn't feel quite right anymore," said Anthony. "Is that door open!?" he noticed with no small amount of unbridled excitement.

In a moment of pure desperation, Anthony ran to the door, forgetting all about Etta for that moment. But just as he began to turn the handle, he had a sudden thought. What if whatever had been causing that extreme stress was waiting for them outside? Anthony stayed with that thought for a brief interlude before taking out his wand and shoving the door open prepared for anything on the other side.
