Helen's right hand gripped the handle of her umbrella so she could quickly unsheathe it if the vampire made a flase move. Then again, if he made a false move, would she be quick enough to stop it? Probably not in her current state. She stared at this new vampire- Shadows, was it?- through narrowed eyes.

Jo-jo began to growl and bark threateningly again. He bared his teeth, and his hackles were raised. When he attempted to get in front of his mistress, Helen stopped him by putting her foot in his way. She didn't want him to harm himself.

He seems familiar somehow... Helen's frowned slightly in concentration. Where have I seen him before?

"That's quite all right, Mr. Shadows," she replied cooly. "I'm beginning to get use to vampires popping up everywhere. However, I confess I am curious; how did you know my name? And shouldn't you be back at the manor helping the others?" She remebered how Odakira had rushed back to the manor as if his hair was fire. If the manor needed him so badly, then why did this Shadows character show up. "Oh, I get it," she smiled slightly. "You're probably some second rate vampire, and you'd only get in the way, so they sent you here to keep an eye on the poor, wounded professor."

"Food Food Food. Where is the damned food?" Kyphus muttered. Finally, at the point of exhaustion. Kyphus sat on his haunches and lifted his nose, trying to locate something worth...Kyphus smelled something. Something delicious...and something that haunted him from World War II.

But which to follow? Kyphus angled his head down one corridor where food pulled provocatively at his nose. And then there was another corridor where he heard the sounds of cannonfire and smelt gunpowder.

Kyphus started to lope off to the danger zone...

Sensing that his opponent was unwilling to talk, Mernov sighed and took a step back. He whipped off his cloak, and as he did so his form seemed to flicker for just an instant, and his cloak was gone. He did this similarly with his jacket, leaving him with his blood-red vest, french-cuffed shirt, and trousers. He was just straightening out these cuffs when he sensed a sudden change in his opponent. This, he sensed, was that strange and rather irritating barrier from earlier. No matter, it was fairly obvious that bullets wouldn't be used much in the battle anyway. Though he had thusfar shown a great resilience towards Mernov's mental prods and jabs, it was time to step things up a notch. No, not just one -- several notches. The tall vampire grinned as he remembered that, since he was on "vacation," he would not need approval to remove the limits placed upon his powers. It was time.

Mernov hardly felt the odd, glowing spikes slice through his body. Pain was beneath him, especially now. He looked down at the cold spikes of pure energy going into and through his own body. It probably stung, and his flesh was probably crying out to him. It didn't matter; worse had been done to him. Though he felt a particularly vicious laugh welling up within him he decided to stow it, for now was a time to be serious. He closed his eyes slowly, then reopened them with just as much lag. Now, however, they seemed to glow faintly with an evil energy. Though this glow was not obvious, nor was it even found upon a second glance, it was there nonetheless. The tall vampire felt that his arm was currently trapped by several of those bothersome, twenty-foot spikes. So, he didn't point. Instead, he gestured with his head and opened his mouth to speak.

"Look, dear boy," Mernov said with an almost uncharacteristic look of seriousness upon his face. It betrayed neither fear nor anger nor pain. No emotion was readily visible in his expressions, but a closer look than any at the time could have made might have revealed excitement. "Just in front of the fence. Isn't that your sweetheart?" Though impossible, it was true. There was, in all her glory; her uniform was as neat as it ever was, though slightly wrinkled in the appropriate spots as from hurried movement; her hair was neatly tied up, save a few strands that had possibly fallen loose from rushing. Her face, however, though as soft and pretty as ever, was covered a great many tears which fell down her cheeks like a great river. Her hand was outstretched towards the two vampires engaged in combat as she ran. Though her words could not be understood from the distance she was at, she was clearly screaming.

OOC: if you didn't figure this out, it's a very elaborate and high-class illusion. since studying wikipedia's entry on hellsing seems to show that the more powerful vampires have their own individual powers, I thought it would be fitting for one of Mernov's to be very powerful and highly believable, realistic illusions. I dont pretend to dictate whether or not your character will be able to know that it's an illusion, but I will say that it is highly unlikely. this illusion is presently designed to be for one person only, and the victim's real life body is motionless during it. Obviously, within the illusion the victim can move around and such. mernov can move a little and can talk to other people and such while he is maintaining the illusion, but he probably wont.

Mernov's illusions have the capability to be somewhat like the tsukiyomi technique of the sharingan from naruto, if anyone knows that, in that several days can elapse within them, while only a second has passed in the real world. I don't think this will be one, but the time might be messed with slightly. in this level of illusion, mernov must remain motionless, and maintaining eye contact helps. of course, if several days take only a second, this isn't too hard, is it? ;)

Shadows raised an eyebrow.

"Forgive me, Miss, but I know for a fact you can handle yourself well with a sword. Hardly the helpless professor." he said pointedly. "I am over three centuries old, and there are two reasons I am not at the manor. The first of which is I am not needed. Neither is Odakira, for that matter. Mernov has the situation well in hand. Besides, I doubt he'd accept help from anyone else anyway.

"The second reason I am here," he said, pausing to take a breath, though he hadn't needed oxygen to survive for over three hundred years or so, "Is indeed to watch over you, but not for the reasons you think." His eyes misted over slightly as he remembered.

"Before I became a vampire, my life had been saved by a man named Ethan Thames, your great great ancestor. I promised him I would watch after his family as long as I lived. Though I'm not exactly living, I still keep to my word." He winked slyly at her. "Not all vampires are evil, you know. Just the ones without souls." He smiled slightly and bowed.

"Should you require my assistance at any time, simply call my name." he said. "If I can humanly...or vampirically, for that matter, be there, I shall."

"I never said all vampires are evil," Helen said softly as she lowered her umbrella. Her eyes became softer as they became lost in thought. "I've experienced a bit of both the last couple of nights." Memories of Odakira tending her feet and other wounds flashed through her mind, as well as memories of the vampire from the alley, and those who had kidnapped her. She sighed, and shook her head to clear away the memories. Her eyes became a sharper green as they became alert once more, but the distrust was now absent. She remembered him from the manor. He was the one who threatened Kyphus, and he had also tried to stop the Nazi vampiress from taking her away.

"So, Mr. Shadows," Helen tone was more business-like. She walked closer to him, he seemed so familiar. "You've been protecting me my whole life?" What happened, were you on vacation? she thought to herself as she remembered how she had hunted by a bunch of vampires the night before last, and almost bitten by another. She took a closer look at him and snapped her fingers. "I've seen you on the bus, and on the campus at night!" she exclaimed. "And the dogwood tree that grew next to my window when I was young!! I told my parents over and over that someone was in the tree, but they never believed me."

How ironic! she thought as she laughed a little. All those years of bieng afraid that vampires lurked in my closet, and there was one outside my window the whole time...

"Well, then, Mr. Shadows" Helen said pleasantly as her laughter died down. "If you would come with me, I need a cup of tea. I know you only need blood to survive, but would you like one, as well?" She turned around, and walked briskly across campus and back into her classroom. She glanced at the direction of where the smoke was rising and couldn't help, but hope everyone would be okay.

Shadows gave a low whistle.

"Y-you actually saw me?" he said, amazed. His stealth skills were nearly unparalleled in all of Hellsing. How could she, even as a little girl, have seen him at all, even felt his presence?

"More than the average professor indeed!" he exclaimed, stunned at the innate abilities of this human.

"As for tea," he began, "I would be delighted to join you, Mernov will be fine handling the situation on his own..." Shadows shook his head as he followed the young professor to her classroom. He saw her glance at the smoke and nodded.

"That would be caused by the massive cannon our Hitler-Friendly vampire brought to his play-date.' he said, grinning slightly. "He should have brought a toy that wouldn't get broken, though. I doubt there's enough super glue in the country to fix that thing."

The words reflected from his mind like a bullet that skimmed off a surface, only to deflect off into a random direction. His facial complexions left no trace or scathe to Mernov's words, but his wide grin fell.

'Er-Erika...?'

His eyes locked onto the figure of Erika running to him. He couldn't believe what he was seeing. His clenched fist loosened, the black spikes began to shrink at a slow rate.

'But... how? This can't be true... I-I encaged her!'

The spikes stopped in their motion. Wolfgang had a tranced expression displayed amongst his face. He didn't know what to do.

'Is she here for him? Is she here for me?'

The Nazi's sight lowered to the ground, lost in his own waking thoughts as they trembled through his mind randomly. Many questions and no answers, but one question became logic to his beckoning within.

'Even if she is here, there is no reason for Mernov to be...'

To this thought, Wolfgang's sights ran up Mernov's impaled figure, flickering with rage once again. His frown stretched upward to one side as he spoke out quietly in a cold tone to him, "Nice try... Mernov." His fist then clenched again, tightly, but to this, the spikes that hadn't even reached him now bent. Coming around Wolfgang's figure from various directions, causing more piercing dark projectiles to tear through his hanging body.

Letting out a shout as his attack took place, he knew for a fact that the Erika he glanced was fake, for the shield he encaged her in could only be destroyed by his life. For a fact, he was not dead, at least yet. For he still took note of Mernov's deadliness, for he could be holding back.[/color:cc545e11e6]

Just as Erika had given up, the barrier on her suddenly jolted, closing in on the girl as she shouted, pushing her hands out to try and stop it. She winced, forcing her own barrier against Wolfgang's in an attempt to keep from being squeezed to death by the barrier. As Erika's barrier contacted with Wolfgang's, there was a sudden burst of black electricity, and she saw her master's barrier fade in and out of existance. Using this as her chance, Erika stood up quickly, enlarging the barrier around her as she did so. In a matter of moments Erika had noticed Wolfgang's barrier seem to fade away, and grinned. I only have a few minutes... it seems like he's lost concentration.. or something... Erika thought to herself, worried. Using the little bit of time she had left, Erika grabbed her hat and shoved it onto her head, dashing out of the office and out of the mansion. Black flames appeared at her feet as she was quickly engulfed in them, reappearing a good distance away from a large cloud of smoke.

She knew that could only be one thing; Moloch. Gritting her teeth, Erika sprinted as fast as she could toward Wolfgang, reaching out and calling his name, sweat trickling down the side of her face.[/color:dd74005e3c]

So the boy wasn't buying the illusion. No matter. Whether he liked it or not, he was still in it. "Real," to Mernov, was whatever he came up with. He would believe, he had no choice. Mernov vaguely felt the extra spikes slice through his form, as though experiencing it from some remote location, perhaps even just watching it happen. It didn't matter any more than it had the first time; pain was simply a brain signal which troubled a warrior, and it had no use to Mernov at the time. From the corner of his eye he saw the young woman whom he was creating an illusion of running. Ironic, yes, and certainly unforseen. However, this could be somewhat of an advantage. Maintaining two illusions was no problem at all, and the more minds he could play with the better. Besides, perhaps this would teach Wolfgang the lesson better than he would have learned it otherwise.

To Wolfgang's eyes, the young woman continued to run, as fast as she could, tears streaming down her cheeks. Mernov felt pride in this illusion, and it certainly helped to have a frame of reference right there. Within moments she reached the Nazi leader and moved as close to him as she could, trying to hold onto him and embrace him. Her words now became clear:

"Mein Heirr, no!" the young woman screamed. "Don't do it, I... I don't want to lose you! Please, it isn't worth it! I will kill myself if you die in such a way. Please, let us just go home, to the old tree, just like things were!" At this moment, another wave of genuine tears poured fourth from the girl's eyes. Indeed, the young woman's presence also served the dual purpose of having personal memories to pick through and use to aid the illusion.

To Erika's eyes, though her body remained still perhaps five meters away from Wolfgang's own petrified form, she was right up to him. The tall Nazi turned around, loosing the spikes in her direction so that she wouldn't be hit by them. He looked upon her with a face revealing compassion and worry.

"Engel, why have you come here?" the tall man said. "On that matter, how have you come here? You know I wished you to stay, that's why I set up the barrier..."

Relieved that Wolfgang was unscathed, she smiled, wrapping her arms around his waist. "I'm so glad.. that you're ok.." When he spoke, she backed down slightly, lowering her eyes. "Well, I was just scared, liebe.. I didn't want you to die.. it isn't worth it, you know?" she struggled to come up with reasons; she felt as if he were cross with her now. Slipping her hand onto one of his which held the gigantic weapon, she rubbed her cheek against his. "Come on, let's go back home. We don't need to waste our time on him.", she finished, tugging his arm as she took a step back.[/color:8bc2b9f0fc]

Erika's embrace was warm as it came to embrace Wolfgang tightly. The touch was genuine in itself, and the Nazi let loose of the spikes. He released his clutched fist, allowing his digits to loosely fall. In reaction, the black barrier and spikes shimmered, only to quickly shatter and faded into an ethereal display, then vanish. Allowing what was left of Mernov's figure to fall from the impaling, dark, thorns.

Wolfgang lowered himself to kneel at the ground as he embraced 'Erika', his optics not leaving his foe's body as he spoke out in a quiet whisper to her, his tone was flat, and cold.

"I cannot allow this...Scum, to live any longer. After what he did to you, there is no other better way to see his affliction vanish from your thoughts." His optics studied what they could of Mernov's presence. Torn and tattered from his attack. This would most likely be the perfect chance to fire. To his thoughts, his slowly brought the cannon to rest onto his shoulder, his thumb pressing the switch to convert from the cannon shot to the shotgun blast. His finger remained on the trigger, ready to pull it at any given moment, depending upon what exactly his enemy would do.

"...Besides." Allowing a low chuckle to escape his domain, he continued, "In the end, we will always return home..." His occular's lids narrowed somehwat as they gazed deeply into Mernov, his grin grew once more as he awaited the moment to fire.

"Release her...now..." He whispered, not through his vocals, but within his mind. Telepathically cutting into Mernov's mind with a cold shrill of his words. His index finger touched the trigger, his hand grasped the handle of Moloch. Basically, making a gesture that if he wouldn't, it would be the end of him where he laid.[/color:aa0a528b82]

Odakira tilted his head, feeling awkward as he studied Erika's and Wolfgang's figures as they seemed to have been moving, yet interacting with nothing. He sensed that it was Mernov's power shortly after. Tilting his head to one side to allow his dark-brown hair whisk in the wind, he brought a small grin to curl up one side of his face. Within the depths of his mind, he could easily tear Mernov's illusion apart, but for Wolfgang, it would be hard. Ironic that their last day of training was halted before the exercise of this power could be revealed to his student.

"I wasn't supposed to see you then?" Helen raised her eyebrows in surprise. "I'm sorry, I probably should have kept that to myself." She dug through her closet for a few minutes, and pulled out a kettle and a hot plate she had sacked from the science department. The professor cleared a spot on her desk, and then set the hot plate on it.

"I am only an average professor, Mr. Shadows... I've just had odd experiences, that's all," she said while she filled the kettle with water from the water fountain in the corner of the classroom. Helen placed the kettle on the hot plate and switched it on.

"Oh, so he's the one behind all this, is he?" Helen said, referring to the Nazi vampire from last night. "What does he want with Mernov?" she asked as she rummaged through the drawers of her desk for tea. "I only drink herbal tea," she told him as she fished out the box of tea. "Would you like lemon, peppermint, or apple-cinnamon?" Jo-jo never left Helen's side as she walked around the classroom. He glared at the newcomer, but stayed silent as he padded softly behind his misstress.

Mernov grinned as his eyes fell upon the two nazis as they fell deeper and deeper into the depths of his intricate illusions. The die had been cast, and so it was time to continue onto the next phase. Though the tall vampire had a feeling that his actions could be interpretted as cruel, in reality all he was doing was uncovering the truth before the eyes of the two poor souls -- or rather, souless immortals, as it were. Mernov's grin continued to widen as he felt the spikes leave his body. Though it was true that Wolfgang had done this within the illusion, it had been caused in actuality by the lack of focus which being within the illusion brought. Mernov's body quickly regenerated, and he stretched his limbs slowly as though testing them out.

Meanwhile, within Wolfgang's reality, Mernov struggled to one knee, his regenerative powers seeming sluggish, perhaps due to the power of the glowing spikes. Even after he had regenerated, however, he remained on one knee, perhaps saving his strength. He did not attack, however. Instead, he looked up appealingly to Wolfgang, hardly even looking at Erika.

"Scum, you call me?" the tall vampire said, still kneeling. "Sir, you injure me more than this physical wound did. I was merely trying to teach you a lesson; that true love can never passed for forced love." Erika, who had been enjoying the embrace, stepped back a foot, moving her hand to her mouth.

"Mein herr..." the girl spoke, with fear and confusion in her voice. "What does he mean? You... I..."

"Apparently you have been blaming her disobedient actions on some sort of spell which you claim I put her under," Mernov continued, a few moments after the girl stopped talking but still before Wolfgang could open his mouth. "You should know, that I never even considered putting her under any sort of spell that night."

"I... but -- no!" the female vampire stammered. "He -- that scumbag, he's lying, I -- it..."

"While I sensed something of this sort when I saw you two," the tall vampire began again, waiting less time after Erika stopped talking to keep Wolfgang from interrupting, "I never expected it to be as strong as this. No, I speak not of love. I speak of vampiric magick. The reason she fell for me so quickly and with such fervor was because you used your vampiric powers to enhance her feelings for you. While I cannot say whether or not she ever did have feelings for you -- I suspect she did, however -- I can say that having them amplified by you only made her more susceptable to what true wooing feels like. She was completely unprepared for the feelings of uninfluenced seduction."

Erika remained silent, though she slowly took steps away from Wolfgang, clutching the locket around her neck. "You --" she stammered at last, "You tricked me?! I -- but... I loved you, or I thought I did. It makes sense now... it was different, what I felt when Mernov did... what he did." Her eyes began to well up with tears; tears of confusion and anger. "I can't believe you!" the young girl screamed after a moment, the droplets flowing down her cheeks readily. She paused for another second, as though gathering the strength to speak. "I... I hate you!" With those final words, she ripped the locket which she had been clutching to so tightly for the passed few moments, and threw it vaguely towards Wolfgang, then ran quickly off in a disgruntled mess, her tears still falling down her cheeks. It was quite obvious, however, that she didn't care.

Inside Erika's reality, things were slightly different, though the upcoming emotions were rather similar. Wolfgang looked back to his engel, seeing her tugging upon his sleeve. "Mein liebe," the Nazi leader spoke, his voice calm but still containing a thread of irritation. "I shall be with you when I finish here." He paused, ripping his arm from her grasp and retaking his hold upon his precious weapon. "And to answer your question, yes, yes it is worth it. I must destroy this man, for he has offended me... and you as well."

"You don't seem to be caring too much about your "love," Wolfgang," Mernov said tentatively, though his voice did not faulter and retained its rich fullness. Wolfgang whirled around, glaring viscious knives into the vampire before him. The spikes seemed to multiply, and each drove themselves into Mernov's immobile body, forcing him down to the ground.

"You are not one to talk!" Wolfgang shouted in a rage. "She is mine, and you tried to steal her from me! And you!" Wolfgang paused slightly, his last two words coming after Erika spoke of wasting time. "Apparently, while "we" needn't waste time on him, "you" do! I don't even know if there is a "home" to go back to any longer. I can't trust you, as hard as I try."

"Wolfgang," Mernov interjected, though he sounded slightly pained. "You have none to blame but yourself." The tall vampire paused to take a breath, but continued before he could be interrupted. "While she may have harboured feelings for you before you turned, your enhancing them magickally did nothing; it did not actually make her love you more, it only made her think she loved you."

"SO?!" the angry nazi shouted, clearly quite upset with Mernov now; if possible, even more so than he was earlier. "She loved me. We were happy. You stole it from me! You STOLE it!"

"I merely showed you the truth," the tall vampire said quietly, though still quite audibly. To these words, Wolfgang snarled, putting his cannon to his shoulder in preparation for the destruction of this vampire, once and for all.

"I will not listen to you, fell beast." The tall nazi slowly took aim....

Finally, the door! It took long enough for Kyphus to track the smell without bumping into vents and walls, but after his struggle in the darkness of his own mind, he had found the door! But what he found beyond it was a bit strange. Just a bunch of people, seemingly standing still.

"Odakira," Kyphus whispered tentatively. "What's going on? This reminds me of a drinking game I once played"

In her illusionary Hell, Erika slowly backed away from Wolfgang as he snapped his arm away. "It was.. all a lie?" she whispered, shifting her gaze from Wolfgang, to Mernov, and back and forth again. She couldn't believe it. Now that she knew this, Erika really didn't have a home to return to anymore. Hoping that it was just some stupid lie, Erika forced a smile, putting her arm on Wolfgang's once more.

"It's all a lie.. right, Liebe? I mean.. really.. You don't need magic to seduce me!" she said, her voice weak and trembling, as well as her hands. "We love eachother.. I love YOU.. Wolfgang.. no... Let's just go home before this gets out of hand. We don't need to lower ourselves to his level!" she began screaming, pulling on his arm as crimson tears streaked down her cheeks.

Erika's world was starting to crumble from beneath her; any sense of solace and serenity had been shattered in mere seconds. Suddenly nothing mattered anymore. She reached up to touch the locket at her bosom, gripping it tightly so that her knuckles turned white. "I.. can't believe this..." she said, tugging on the chain of the locket slightly, as if she were about to rip it off.[/color:a02c1f3cd6]
