She wasn't sure why the name was so important, but he insisted, and she obeyed. "So, Jennifer Johnson," she said with a small smile, "I'm not sure what sort of... chore work you're accustomed to doing." She paused, tucking a few strands of hair behind her ear-- she felt the hat, and reached up to adjust it, not taking it off. Despite her extremely low-profile appearance next to the strange aliens inhabiting Coruscant, she remained wary of being too obvious. "I'm sorry. Rather rude of me, I know, but you'll have to excuse me. As I was saying, I don't know what, precisely, you generally do. Perhaps you could enlighten me?" |

It wouldn't do to deprive him of information -- it was easily found in the busy bar, for anyone with an a tongue and an ear -- and leading him the wrong way would be similarly incriminating. The obvious answer which remained to him was to tell him only as much as anyone in the bar knew. A slight exaggeration or two, however, could be easily forgiven. After all, that's how all word-of-mouth tends to go.
"Finding the truth in the lies, I like your style Master Jedi." Jay was now in his element, and it was apparent. His appreciation for rumors and random conversation was nearly as great as his appreciation for music. "Here's the scoop as nearly as I've got it. This guy, they say, is a senator. Name of Femca, Jamil, something like that. Anyhow, word is that he was a key supporter of some new legislation. Well, now that could be coincidence, and normally I would say so. Except! Two more senators supporting that same legislation have also died. Rumor has it that they all died in the same manner, as well. "Can it still be coincidence? Maybe, but the boys and girls in back are thinking not." Jay took a quick break to sip his drink, a pale red liquid that was almost pink, with some white swirled in. After a short pause, he cleared his throat and continued talking. "Weird thing is, nobody's heard anything about a buyer for these jobs. Everyone I talked to in back is just as or more clueless than I am. There was some jealousy -- suspect there's a nice, chunky price tag, you see -- but no regret, no self-satisfaction. If anyone back there heard about these jobs, or was running them, they've got me fooled." An excellent choice of words; there wasn't even a lie to mask. "Anyway, if it were up to me, I'd guess the buyer is some fat, rich senator who stands to lose a lot if whatever bill these chaps were supporting goes through. That's how it usually goes in these cases -- but I'm sure you could have figured that out." At that moment, Jay caught a significant look from his bartender. Garik tilted his head subtly towards the two women as he turned around -- the man really was a genius in body language; Jay would have hired him just for that fact. "Anything else I can help with, Master Jedi? There's a pair of ladies I've never seen 'round here who my bartender seems to think require my attention. I'm sure I've time, so, really, don't hesitate to ask!" |

Not really thinking any deeper upon the name given to her. It could be real, or not, either way she didn't particularly care. "Well... I've been doing everything under the sun, 'cept babysitting. I, uh, scare kids," Jenny responded. "Ah, now that I think of it, one of the guys I did garden work for was one of those Senators that got killed. It's a shame, really... he paid well."

| Asai Joined: 24 Aug 2003 Posts: 638 | Jay was quite the smooth talker, Adolin knew. He listened very carefully to each word, and watched the musician equally cautiously. He sensed something was not entirely correct about Jay's word choice, and while he could tell the man hadn't lied, something was bothering the Chiss Master. He couldn't put his finger on it at the moment, but he made a mental note to examine it later.
As far as the information itself went, nothing of use yet. Most of this was speculation, many of these conclusions had Adolin already come to; he wanted something he didn't know. "Ah, yes, well, there is one thing," Adolin said, following Jay's glance to the two strange women he noticed earlier, "You see, there must be some supposition as to why it was these specific Senators. This bill as a catalyst, yes, but the Senators themselves are relatively obscure..." Adolin's voice trailed off as he contemplated for a moment. Yes, that would be tricky, wouldn't it? Targeting lesser known Senators decreases the strength behind an investigation, less people care. Adolin realized he had no time to lose. "Jay, if you could speculate the next target, who would you suppose it to be?" |

A chill had run down her spine at Jennifer's mention of the Senator. She couldn't pick out just what it was, exactly, that made the hairs on the back of her neck begin to prickle uncomfortable, but her instinct had served her well in the past, and she was rather attuned to it.
But she'd just lost a close friend, and hadn't yet sat down in a quiet, safe place to allow herself to grieve. Perhaps this was only a manifestation of the emotion she was keeping so carefully under wraps? Yes, she knew from numerous studies that such psychological burdens could occasionally manifest themselves as physical discomforts; thus diagnosed, she returned her attention to Jennifer and attempted to think no more about it. "No need for concern, then," she said kindly. "Children are in no way involved." She paused. She really didn't have anything she needed to hire this woman for, but she did want quite badly to speak to the owner of this establishment. She glanced around, but couldn't tell for sure who he might be-- there were several who appeared a little less dirty than the others, but that might not mean anything. She wouldn't have been surprised, in fact, if the owner had been the smelliest of the lot. Well, perhaps she was missing him, or maybe he wasn't even back here at the moment. More stalling, then. "How do you feel about--" she mentally searched for something, anything to keep this woman talking while she waited; she was unable to ignore the heavy, constant smell, however, so her topic was slightly less elegant than she might have liked-- "plumbing work?" OOC:Um... yeah. >< I'll just kind of wait here, then, for someone else to make something happen. XD |

A Jedi, very talented, currently occupied talking to some guy. Huh, she thought, he seems to be more of a Light-sider than anyone I've met recently... I wonder what he's up to?
She snapped out of her thoughts at Rigel's query. "Ehhhh? What, broke your shitter line?" Without waiting for a response, she dived right in with, "Well, I guess I could patch it up, but no guarantees. I don't do that kind of stuff very often." OOC:My life is complete, having put a that sentence in a post.

Not expecting any further questions, Jay had begun to shift in his chair to stand up. When the Jedi spoke again, however, he masterfully changed this movement into crossing his legs, and resettled himself. He passed a curious eye over the Jedi Master, considering the question. Had Jay received the next target, it would have been trivial to tell the Jedi exactly the information he wanted, but would also have made it that much more difficult to feign uncertainty. He could manage it, of course, but was nevertheless glad for his ignorance. Furthermore, the only information about the cause of the murders was that which he gleaned from people around -- he kept a strict "no questions, no answers" policy with his customers in nearly all cases. This was just the sort of situation that this policy helped him avoid. "Hmmm..." he said at last, still thinking. "My guess is really as good as yours. The only solid information I've got is the same information you've heard. But, if there's any motive besides this bill people are talking about, it's going to take someone smarter than me to figure out. Obviously, whoever's behind this wanted it kept quiet, otherwise they wouldn't have targeted such small fries. I'm not up-to-date on every Senator on either side of the bill, but if you can find a list of everyone on the same side as these three, then I'd say just about anyone on that same list is at risk." Of course, he considered, If anyone off that list gets whacked, then they'll really be thrown for a loop... |

Um... Dan, can Jay come over sooner rather than later? Jenny and Marael are running out of things to do... Jenny's drink finally came, along with Rigel's. She sipped it without enjoyment, like it was just water. Well, it pretty much was. You got what you paid for in places like this. "Anyways, so that's what I do," Jenny said. "I'm a jack-of-all-trades... half the time I just lay around doing nothing or avoiding my landlady (I'm perpetually late with my rent)." She broke out in a grin. "But the other half makes it totally worth it. There are some interesting and wierd things that people need done." OOC:So... if you haven't watched Gintama (about a jack of all trades... fancy that) you should. Hilarious. |
| Asai Joined: 24 Aug 2003 Posts: 638 | "Thank you, Jay," Adolin said, "That will be all." He handed Jay roughly 300 credits and turned back to his drink. The wheels in his mind turned. If this information was beyond Jay, then it was quite covert indeed. Little that went on in the darker dealings of Coruscant escaped the knowledge of the bar owner, and it was more than a little unsettling that even he knew nothing about the targets. Adolin believed his speculation was correct, but he had no evidence to back it up.
As he took another sip from his glass, he reached into his robes and pulled out his datapad. He began to search for the bill on the mining regulations, as well as the senators supporting it. The Chiss Master's eyes flicked up and down the screen, noting the names that were prominent senators and noting the names of those who were far less important. Of the obscure senators, there were maybe 9 total who were so unmentionable that they would be prime targets. He noted as well that six of them were already dead, though only three had been notably assassinated. The other three seemed to have died normal deaths: One car accident, one heart attack, and one who choked to death on a pretzel. These deaths occur in the weeks before the first assassination, when the bill was still in the final stages of completion before voting. An interesting possibility, but given the same strategy of the most recent deaths, if it was assassination, it was not done by the same hitman. That left three: Marael Zadawi, Sidias Bionte, and Pinacia Ornil. Adolin decided that this should be a good place to start his investigation. He would investigate immediately...but first, he wanted to finish his drink. |

With a wave, he left the table and headed back to the bar, where he refilled his drink and put the credits in the register. Garik inclined his head slightly to indicate that the women were still on the other side of the bar, and Jay winked to show that he understood. He then proceeded to walk around the bar and sit down on a stool next to the one-eyed woman.
"I've never seen you two around here," he said with a warm smile. "What're you having? Have another round on me." He made a vague motion with his free hand, and Garik began to start mixing the drinks. "Name of Jay. They call me 'Truth' around here, but Jay is just as acceptable." Here, Jay's smile turned crooked, becoming more like a sly grin than anything else. "You looking for something specific from 'Truth and Lies,' or just something? S'good chance I can help you out, if you've something in mind!" OOC: bleah... it'll get it going |

She noted that this urge seemed to be reintroducing itself every time Jennifer opened her mouth. Certainly not what Marael was looking for. She had nothing against those lacking in necessary political skills, of course; she understood that it wasn't required of everyone, and didn't expect it from the people in such a lowlife establishment, but she still found it a bit distasteful. She'd heard that in these parts of Coruscant, those who weren't careful with their words got themselves into a lot of trouble-- in that way, at least, it wasn't so different from the Coruscant she knew. She couldn't help but wonder at Jennifer's continued existence.
"I'm looking to hire," she said slowly, not yet willing to divulge the fact that her definition of work didn't match Jennifer's exactly. Is this the "Boss"? she wondered, looking at Jay with a critical eye. He must be; he'd introduced himself as Truth, and given the name of the place, it would make sense. So where's the other half? she thought, vaguely toying with the idea that the two might be one in the same. In which case, perhaps this man was not to be entirely trusted just yet. Still, perhaps he could help her without knowing the details. "I'm afraid it's a matter of some delicacy. I wonder if you know of anyone here capable of keeping his mouth shut?" She paused, adjusting her oversized sunglasses, which looked terribly out-of-place in the dim bar. "For adequate compensation, of course." |
| Digithe Joined: 24 Aug 2003 Posts: 884 | Posted: Sat Dec 08, 2007 3:26 pm | Characters: All for this theme; By Digithe: This theme, Any theme Jay blinked several times in rapid succession in response to Jenny's introduction. That she wanted work wasn't surprising; given her appearance, it seemed that she wanted many things, like the ability to blend in with a crowd. What was really surprising was the way she idly tossed out the possibility of working as an assassin, as if it were as common a job as a waitress or pilot. That led Jay to come to two conclusions: either she had some failed experience as an assassin, or she was a bored rich kid with a fake eye patch. As much as the second possibility amused him, his gut told him that her life wasn't nearly so easy as that, and he'd long since learned to trust it.
"Any kind of work, eh, Jennifer? Mind if I call you Jen?" he asked playfully. "Well, there's plenty of room on the street corners, if you know what I mean, but I'm sure you're not quite that desperate. If you are, though, then I may just have to offer you a job as a waitress here. We'll try you out for a few, see how it goes. Ever waited tables? Pay is not fantastic, but you'll be able to pay rent, and we pool tips -- that'll put plenty of spending money in your pocket. Plus, if you talk with the regulars, you might get some of that other kind of work you're looking for." Now, Jay shifted his attention to the other woman, who seemed almost the exact polar opposite of the first. She was dressed to not be noticed, and somehow Jay felt strangely like he wouldn't have noticed her if he didn't already know she was there. Interesting.... Furthermore, she didn't introduce herself, and seemed to be choosing her words very carefully. This intrigued Jay greatly. From his experience, he surmised that she was probably someone with money; poor people, after all, tend not to worry about 'matters of some delicacy." The only help they tend to look for in a bar, furthermore, is in getting drunk. She must also be of some consequence, or she wouldn't be so keen on hiding her identity. Very interesting.... "And you are on the lookout for someone with tight lips," Jay said, more as a statement than a question, though with a tone similar to the one he used with Jennifer. He paused for a moment, looking to be very deep in thought. Suddenly, he snapped his fingers, and hopped over the bar. He bent down and dug around the space behind the bar, and came up with a business card and a pen, with which he had apparently just written something on the card. Placing the card very deliberately face-up on the table, he slid it towards the secretively-dressed woman, trying very hard to make out her eyes through the thick sunglasses. "This is an old card, so the com-link number is wrong, but I wrote his private number on the back. I'll call him and make sure he's expecting you. What name shall I give him?" The front of the card read, "Jarvis Mc'aar, Private Investigator, 8F0-0D0A9-E9C1." On the back, however, instead of a com-link number there were the words: "One level up, Sector IV, Mersenne Park." OOC: I have no idea how com-links work, or how Coruscant is organized... >_>; |

Unless you could hook me up with one of those neat glass eyeballs." OOC:yay postedddd Yay Jennifer's got a job!! with her Jedi balance and abilities, waitressing should be a snap :) |

Long nails slid beneath the edge of the card, slipping it easily into Marael's slender fingers, and she gave it no more than a quick glance, not even bothering to turn it over, before turning back toward Jay. "Rigel would be best," she said, her tone clipped. She reached up with the hand not holding the card to adjust her oversized dark glasses; in the dim light of the bar, such a gesture might have seemed unnecessary, but it allowed her a short opportunity to peer beneath the bottom edge of the glasses, to get a proper look at the writing on the card. Half a moment later, her glasses settled back into place, she offered Jay a warm smile. "May I inquire as to Mister--" a quick glance downward-- "Mc'aar's working hours?" She had noted the very careful way in which he handed her the card, and wasn't even sure whether Mc'aar was indeed the name she was dealing with, and she certainly didn't want to call or show up at an inopportune moment. |
