Nezei did not particularly appreciate the humor or the dodginess which Evangeline was currently exuding. Where he a less controlled man, he may have simply seized Evangeline and slammed her up against a nearby tree. However, such an action was a quintessential breach of Nezei's character, and instead simply folded his arms across his chest.

"I know why you are here, I want to know what he told you," Nezei said evenly, "It comes as no surprise to me that you are here, I am not particularly surprised he sent you, given his current position...it's really no worse than ours. However, his sending you means he had some reason to believe that we were in some kind of danger, or he needed someone to get around, or some other such nonsense. If he felt that way, there was some kind of evidence to support it. I suspect he believes foul play, as myself and Jidat do. I've always trusted your captain to be perceptive in all matters, and the fact that he believes us to be in trouble means that something is terribly amiss." Nezei had weighed the possibility that feeding her this much information was counter to his own suspicions, but the fact was that Evangeline was far too crafty and perceptive to give a bone without being thrown a few first, and this information was trivial enough. If she proved disloyal, Nezei reasoned, executing her wouldn't be particularly difficult.

"Now, I need to know what it is that he told you to confirm my own suspicions. Understood?"

Eleventh Division members were known for their fighting abilities, their knack for staying alive through situations in which most others would find themselves very quickly dead. They were not, however, known for their cooperative abilities, nor did they particularly excel at getting along with authority figures in general. Zaraki, scary as he was, didn't insist on the usual formalities... if he wanted something, all he had to do was curse at you in that low rumble of his. Or throw an inkwell at your head. Whichever happened to be more convenient. Because of this, Evangeline had never been given the proper habits befitting a seated shinigami; her idea of respect was not pushing a guy into his soup in the mess hall.

"Yeah," she said, "I understand." She shrugged. "But I ain't disobeyin' my Captain's direct orders." She knew very well that Zaraki suspected foul play, just as Nezei did-- he'd told her so right at the beginning. "You trust his judgment, huh? Yeah, me too. Never led me wrong yet, he hasn't, and if he says don't tell, I ain't tellin'."

(Eleventh Division members, while not known for brains, certainly held their own in the stubbornness department.)

She was perfectly aware that Zaraki had probably not been talking about these people when he'd said to keep things a secret... but it was kind of funny watching Rekuzan-taichou's carefully controlled temper flare just beneath the surface. "Sir," she added, as an afterthought, in a tone that was a little too serious to be anything but joking.

Nezei's relatively boundless patience was wearing a little thin. Recognizing that he didn't have time for this, Nezei glanced slightly at Jidat, almost apologetically, were he capable of such a feat. Turning back to Evangeline, he nodded slightly, as though he was agreeing, and then took a step back. As he did, he lifted on hand and then pointed a finger at Evangeline.

"Bakudo no Sanjuusan - Rikujoukourou." he said quietly. A thundering crash broke the near silent air, and Evangeline found herself pinned in place by six rods of light.

"I can see you aren't particularly forthcoming," Nezei began, dropping his arm and moving a step closer. Even though he was limited to ten percent of his full power, that spell would be sufficient for his goal. He hated using force as a coersive method, but then reminded himself that Eleventh squad members can't really be coerced, but could be impressed.

"However," he said, dropping his voice and leaning down to put his face but a few inches from hers, "I urge you to reconsider." With the end of that sentence, Nezei stopped controlling his reiatsu and simply let it flow from him. The sheer power he was putting out wasn't quite as grand as Zaraki Kenpachi's, but it was far more powerful than the others nearby, and certainly enough to shock this insolent 4th seat into cooperating.

OOC: I guess I better post quickly before I get left behind...

Jidat's eyes widened with surprise when he noticed what his fellow captain was up to, and he took a step towards him as he sheathed his sword. Nanase was clearly similarly surprised, but was rooted to the spot where she stood, her zanpakutou hanging limply by her side. Even the captain, however, stayed his tongue. It was clear that he wanted to say something, but knew that this was not time to be undermining Nezei's authority. It was then clear to him what he must do.

Suddenly, Jidat was standing behind Moira to her left, his right hand on her shoulder and his left on the sheath of his zanpakutou.

"Any information out of you would be similarly appreciated," he said stiffly, in his imitation of Nezei. "That a Fourth-squad would be privy to Zaraki's intel seems doubtful, but, as you can see, we aren't in a position to play around." Nanase watched all this from a distance, biting her lip. She of course knew of all the concerns which Jidat and Rekuzan-taichou had discussed, but the thought of a captain using a binding spell on a fellow shinigami was still startling to her. These two had just fought along side them in combat, and yet were now subject to interrogation! She knew better than to question the decision, but knew also that it would be a long time before she could readily doubt those she had known to be allies. Besides, the pressure from Rekuzan-taichou's reiatsu kept her from doing anything too quickly.

Though Jidat didn't fully release his reiatsu -- he felt that Nezei's should be sufficient, and he was dealing with fourth-squad, besides -- he released enough to clearly convey the killing intent that he was capable of. Instead of the pressure which Nezei's would inflict, it would feel more like a sudden sharp pain, that would quickly dull, though not entirely disappear until he let up. "If you haven't information," Jidat continued, "then I will have your cooperation."

The weight crushed down on Evangeline like water, pressing in on every side. Even had the rods of light not been there to hold her in place, she probably wouldn't have been able to move-- she'd felt reiatsu stronger than this before, certainly, but this was still rather impressive. Her own reiatsu was pushing back reflexively, and although it was nowhere near strong enough to break free, she was at least able to think relatively clearly.

A grin that was not entirely sane broke out across Evangeline's face. Those who knew her would have recognized it as the same expression she wore when fighting a particularly difficult opponent; some had commented that she only seemed to be enjoying herself when it seemed she was about to die. Masochistic, some called her, but the challenge was what drove her-- that, and the joy of having an enemy that she could respect. It was a simple pleasure, and one that not everyone seemed capable of understanding, but to her it was heaven.

Granted, Nezei was not her enemy. At the moment, it didn't matter. She opened her mouth to speak, closed it, and took a moment to gather her willpower. "Careful," she managed to say, knowing very well that she would probably wouldn't be able to say much before her voice lost its steadiness. "All that power ain't somethin' you wanna flaunt, Sunshine." Not sure that she could say much more, she merely stopped talking and let her grin say al that was left to say-- it was a show of defiance (very courageous, if rather stupid), as well as a sign of her particular brand of respect.

In those few moments, Evangeline decided that she liked Nezei. He was nothing like her own Captain, perhaps, but how could she not respect this sort of power, this strength of will? All right, she thought, her eyes locked steadily with his. She didn't think she could say any more, but she hoped he'd understand. You win this one.

Nezei easily recognized that Evangeline barely forced that sentence out from the pressure. Eleventh squad to a fault, that one, he thought. He did also recognize the small glimmer of surrender in the back of her eyes, and it wasn't something he particularly enjoyed seeing, but it wasn't as though he'd truly broken her.

"I know I am not your Captain," Nezei began, holding her defiant stare with his cold one, "However, I would appreciate it if you respected me as though I were, for the time being. This situation goes beyond just the squads themselves, which you must realize on some level if you are teaming and," Nezei paused to sniff the air near her mouth," drinking with a fourth squad member." Straightening up, Nezei banished his spell and sealed his reiatsu again.

"Now, for the sake of Soul Society, what did Kenpachi tell you?"

Evangeline hadn't been expecting the sudden release, but she managed to remain steady on her feet. The grin, of course, never left her face; if anything, it only grew at Nezei's comment about respecting him like her own Captain. Ain't gonna happen, she thought. If he was expecting the bows and the endless quiet obedience other Captains got from their subordinates, he was certainly in for a surprise. Respecting Zaraki was rather like respecting a monster truck (a fond memory from her living days, she thought wryly.) You respected it because it could knock you down. You also took every chance you got to push its buttons.

"He ain't doin' too good," she said at last. Her statement had the air of a willing change of heart, and not so much a concession. If Evangeline really hadn't wanted to cooperate, she might have gone so far as to fight him over it, trivial or no, because that stubbornness was part of what made her an Eleventh. But she held no resentment for the display of power that had just held her paralyzed; if there really was someone else out here looking for them, such a burst of reiatsu could hardly go unnoticed. It was the sort of brashness she might have expected of one of her own, which was both unexpected and a little refreshing. She wasn't gonna start calling this guy Taichou and running around catering to his every whim, but if he wanted to know badly enough to risk drawing attention, she guessed it couldn't hurt to tell him. "If he was, he'd be here himself. He don't trust the... the circumstances, he said." She tried to remember what else he'd told her... not much, as she recalled. He'd kept Yachiru and Ikkaku by his side; that had to mean something, right? "Expects trouble in Seireitei, too. Don't know what kind. And he thinks you're both too pansy-ass to handle it yourselves."

Of course, he'd never actually said that last bit... but she suspected that he might have been thinking it.

"She don't know nothin', lady," she added, turning to Jidat. "I brought her along 'cause she looked bored." She was sure Moira could convince him if she had to, but never let it be said that Evangeline dragged her friends into impossible situations and abandoned them. Even if she sometimes did. Which, thinking back on it, she supposed she had, once or twice, but most of those involved Yachiru and didn't quite count. Nevertheless, she had no doubt that Moira was capable of taking care of herself. Jidat wasn't as scary as Yachiru, and he seemed not to have Nezei's apparent obsession with authority and rules.

"Yeah," Moira admitted, "I don't have a clue as to why I'm here. Beating stuff up was fun, though." She was thankful for Evangeline speaking up on her part, but this time, didn't make the mistake of thanking her out loud.

And then, she realized that she'd missed a vital part of the conversation. "C-Conspiracy?! Bloody hell!" She said, very, very confused.

Jidat nodded, easing his grip on the sheath of his sword. His experience in intelligence gathering led him to readily believe that they were not bluffing. Easing his reiatsu as well, he turned to Nezei and exchanged a significant glance. If Kenpachi was worried enough to send a member of his squad after them, then things were surely more serious than they had previously guessed.

"Perhaps," the captain began tentatively, knowing that what he was about to say would admit something to be true that he really wished was not, "...perhaps we should return to Soul Society. I have a bad feeling." He turned back to the fourth-squad member, assuming that, if Evangeline had brought her with her, then she could be trusted. "We suspect some sort of foul play behind the scenes in Soul Society. Something evil is soon to occur, but we know not what. Kenpachi must feel, as we do, that the time for this evil as drawing very near...."

Ryouji was shocked by the way this man was treating his subordinate. Just like a shinigami, he thought. However, Ryouji was also stunned by the power of this man. He could have moved if he focused, but that reiatsu caught him by surprise and he was still dealing with the shock. Ryouji realized that against all of them, he couldn't hope to achieve victory. Though it wasn't exactly graceful, Ryouji focused his will and disappeared while they were all still distracted by the burst of power. However, Ryouji had the feel of this man's reiatsu, and could easily find him again when he wanted to. For now, however, he knew had to leave...

***

Nezei nodded, agreeing completely with Jidat's assessment. Even knowing that Kenpachi was ill brought a greater threat about, for shinigami do not just simply contract diseases like humans did. Nezei closed his eyes and considered the possibilities. The timing couldn't just be coincidence, his illness, this distractive mission...something was very wrong indeed. Turning away from the others, he noticed the Quincy had vanished. No matter, he thought. Would have been a nuisance anyway. Drawing his zanpakuto, he thrust it into the air in front him, seeking to open the portal between this world and Seireitei. The door appeared in front of him, but when Nezei turned his sword to unlock the gate, nothing happened. Confused, Nezei tried once again to the same result. Now Nezei was truly worried.

They had been shut out of Soul Society.

Evangeline snorted. "Merveilleux. Someone's plannin' a surprise party." She was worried, or as worried as she was capable of being, although you'd never know it. Her Captain was sick, and that in itself was bad enough, but the fact that she couldn't be there with the rest of the Eleventh should anything happen bothered her immensely. Of course Zaraki didn't need to be protected, even in the state he was in; she wasn't stupid enough to assume otherwise. Neither did Yachiru, for that matter... the small girl was perfectly capable of looking after herself, despite her size.

But there was something that Yumichika referred to as an "older sibling syndrome," despite Evangeline's constant death threats, and it meant that she and Ikkaku and even, usually, Yumichika, had a sort of soft spot for the little girl. For her "dad," too, although they'd never ever admit it in a hundred million years. And sure it was sappy and kind of gay, but if anything were to happen--

Evangeline had never been one to focus on the "what ifs." Yachiru was still young and occasionally forgot to keep an eye on her surroundings, making her susceptible to sneak attacks... small cuts and scrapes, usually, were the extent of her injuries. So it was really no big deal, because Zaraki was there to take care of everything, even if he was sick and coughing up blood and strangely, distressingly weak...

Nothing was going to happen. Nothing that her sort-of family-- she would never ever say that aloud, either-- couldn't take care of.

Really.

Not a chance. Chié difficile.

"Bet it was you," she said, smiling brightly and nudging Nanase in the ribs. "Got a birthday comin' up? No? Well, there's gotta be a reason they don't want you back. Maybe 's just 'cause you smell."

"Hah, very funny," Nanase replied rather awkwardly. She wasn't dealing particularly well with the mixture of anxiousness and relaxedness that she now felt. "I'm sure it's... your... hairstyle." Nanase desperately wished to have the same carefree feeling that Evangeline seemed to have, but wasn't yet quite equal to it. That they couldn't open the gate meant something was seriously wrong -- something she had been trying rather hard not to believe for quite some time.

"So this means...." She didn't even need to finish it. Jidat confirmed her fears with a stiff nod.

"That we haven't yet been attacked means that we were probably only meant to be drawn away," he conjectured, surveying the landscape for any contradictions. "Still, it seems odd. Even if we pretend that Zaraki is out of commission, they've only removed two captains. There still, then, remain nine captains to defend. That doesn't even include the other seated officers...." Jidat let go of this thought for the moment. He had no further ideas on this thread, and figured that Nezei would be able to pick it up.

"Anyway, it seems like we'd better find some way to get back. If whoever is behind this feels like they can act with us gone, then it is imperative that we return as soon as possible."

"What about Urahara?" suggested Nanase, "He's still around here somewhere, isn't he? I bet he can get us back."

"Yes, we just may need to rely on him." Jidat shivered, recalling the last time he'd relied on Urahara. That time he'd needed a faux body, and had been issued a female. Another shudder rippled down the captain's spine. He only hoped that something similar would not be involved this time.

"This is... weird," Moira said. "Hopefully it's just some kind of malfunction or mistake." However, her gut feeling told her that wasn't likely.

Her face brightened a little at the mention of Urahara. She had liked him when he had been around, too bad due to certain circumstances... But, that was all in the past. "Yeah, sounds like a plan," she said to Jidat and Nanase. "I mean, considering he's the only man for the job."

"Captain," Narasumi came closer to the pack, "I think the problem might be a little bigger than that." Nara had an intense look on his face, his eyebrows burrowed tight, easily revealed his confused anxiety. He pulled out a small object and pressed a button, then held it up so everyone could hear.

It was a small phone, standard issue for out of soul society missions. "Last I checked, phone lines to soul society couldn't just go out of operation" His eyes glowed a fierce green. "I've got a bad feeling about this."

Nezei opened his own phone, confirming his lieutenant's report. This did not bode well at all. They had been completely shut out from Seireitei. Nezei closed and put away his phone and stared off into the distance. His mind wandered around the possibilities. He knew that something was afoot, he had for quite sometime. But it seemed that both he and Jidat needed to be away first.

"I was wrong in my first assumption," he said, turning to Jidat. "We were not meant to be eliminated, simply pushed aside for the time being. Why it was just us, I do not know, but whoever wanted us away has their free reign now." Shaking his head, he turned to Evangeline.

"Kenpachi is correct, there will be trouble in Seireitei, and he was wise to send you in his stead. I am concerned now that his illness may not be an illness at all, and that he will become a target. If these forces aligned against us are powerful enough to persuade the Central 46 and the Captain-Commander, this may run deeper than we know, and spell trouble even for him." He turned back to Jidat, his mind already coming up with the solution.

"Kisuke will have to do. He can create a senkei gate...but it will take ten days, and we cannot afford to lose anymore time. All of you, come!" With that, Nezei turned away and vanished, racing for Urahara Kisuke, their only real hope.
