Age: 16 Occupation: 6th year student at Hogwarts (Ravenclaw) Description: Felix is a handsome young man of modest height and lean build. His dark brown hair is always neatly styled, often highlighted with various subtle, expertly chosen colors. His eyes are a bright shade of blue which exudes a youthful confidence and curiosity. He holds himself with grace and poise fitting a prince. By all means, nature was kind to him. That is, if you ignore the fact that his ears are completely useless. Felix has never heard a sound in his life, and has consequently never uttered a single word -- he has certainly not, however, let that stop him from working hard to be a great wizard. Wanting to live up to the reputation of his older brother and earn praise from his parents, he shows great resolve in any endeavor he undertakes. His greatest aid in this is his singularly amazing memory. Felix has found that he can remember, almost verbatim, anything he reads. His talent for recalling images is apparently nearly as developed, as he rarely finds himself lost. As he cannot (or will not) speak, he communicates with others through a combination of sign language and writing either on parchment or in the air with his wand. He has become adept at reading lips over the years, and has learned to be very patient with people who have trouble understanding him in return. Though he is completely unfazed by teasing of any sort, his saint-like patience disappears if ever someone thinks him incapable just because he lacks a certain ability that most others have. He feels that his ability should not be questioned because he would never know if a marching band was passing through if he were not staring straight at it. While very friendly and eager to be helpful, many find him difficult to approach because they think he seems unfriendly -- a mistaken idea based only upon the fact that he never audibly speaks to anyone. The situation is made worse by his shyness, probably caused by a fear of people thinking him weird or disliking him for being unable to speak. Consequently, the group of people whom he truly calls 'friends' is small but very close. Even around his friends, Felix's words are almost always dripping with sarcasm. Though a few might describe it as bitter sarcasm, most people know that it's all in fun. Of course, as it's difficult to read sarcasm through signs or letters, Felix relies heavily on facial expressions to convey his meaning. Luckily for him, his face seems made for a great variety of expressions, such that at times he doesn't need to even sign to express his thoughts. Though by no means a prankster himself -- he is very proud to be a Prefect, actually, and does an excellent job of it -- he has been known to hang in the back of a particularly amusing situation for quite a while before putting an end to it. Nevertheless, when it comes to himself he is very responsible -- he has not missed a homework assignment yet (Felix does most assignments during the classes in which he doesn't pay attention to the lecture). History: Felix was the second of four children born to Walter and Belle Nash. Walter was a well-known Auror, while Belle was a charming Witch who owned a small but prosperous shop in Diagon Alley, Belle's and Whistles, selling various unique and often custom magical items. Their first son, Crispian, was born four years before Felix. He excelled at Hogwarts, always making excellent marks in class, scoring highly on exams, and becoming a Prefect. Crispian was generally very well liked, and was even chosen to be captain of the Ravenclaw Quidditch team in his sixth year. Everyone was a bit uneasy when he chose his deaf younger brother to play Keeper, but it was all forgotten when the team won the championship two years in a row. The third child, exactly one year Felix's junior, was a girl by the name of Elayne. She was a gifted witch with nearly as much skill on a broom as her brothers, but not enough interest to try out for the team -- at least not yet. While her brothers were very protective of her, she was at least as protective of Felix. He pretends not to notice, but she never lets anyone make fun of his hearing or yell insults at him behind his back. The youngest child, Maximilian, just missed the cutoff for attendance to his first year at Hogwarts. He is an adventurous little boy who reveres his older brothers. In the years before Felix turned eleven, his parents knew that his condition would be a problem if he hoped to attend school. They offered to home school him for a few years, but he flatly refused, insisting that he not be treated differently than Crispian. So, after a long discussion and several owls to various Ministry folks and Hogwarts teachers, his parents carefully spent the next couple of years teaching him how to use non-verbal incantations. And so it was that Felix set off with his brother for his first term at Hogwarts. He was a nervous wreck, despite his determination to attend, and was horrified to think of how he would get along if nobody but his brother could understand sign language. As it turned out, Crispian had already been teaching a few of his friends, and, his image boosted a bit by knowing upperclassmen, Felix was able to make friends of his own, patiently writing what he wanted to say on parchment until they too gradually learned to sign. Random Notes: Though glad to be let on the Ravenclaw Quidditch team as Keeper, his secret desire is to be a Chaser. He never much cared for simply hanging around looking for a tiny golden ball, and the primitive nature of whacking things with a bat held even less interest for him; he always thought that the high-speed job of scoring and dodging Bludgers seemed most interesting. He knows, however, that being unable to communicate properly with his teammates at those high speeds is a severe handicap not only for himself but for the team as a whole. This has always frustrated him, of course, since he refuses to admit that his deafness is any sort of hindrance. Because of his extraordinary memory, Felix never studies. It's not that people don't see him study. He literally does not study, at least not in the traditional sense. He does most of his studying before school even starts, reading every textbook cover to cover before tossing it in his trunk. For the few classes where this strategy is ineffective, he takes notes on the lectures (reading lips is apparently not the same as reading letters, for him), rereads those afterwards for memorization, and files the notes away to be rented by the minute to less attentive classmates -- he learned to be a rather shrewd businessman from his mother. The closest he ever gets to actually studying is practicing the various wand movements. Despite this, he is generally bad at things which can't be learned properly from a book. The finer points of Transfiguration, for example, tend to take a bit more time than most. Potion-making, though he can remember exactly the ingredients and instructions, is easily one of his weakest subjects. Felix still cannot figure out why. Divination completely eludes him -- it is the one class for which he doesn't even bother with notes, and was his lowest O.W.L. He does have, however, a bit of an advantage over his fellow N.E.W.T students in that he has been using non-verbal incantations since his first year, due to his speech problem. Felix prides himself on an extensive knowledge of languages. While of course he cannot speak them, he can understand a great number of written languages, and can lip-read most of the more common ones. OOC: The history is kind of feeble, as is a lot of the stuff I tried to come up with to counteract his memory.... Comments? Suggestions? Brownie sundae? |

I meant for Crispian to be a friend of Artemis' so that Felix can know him fairly well. Also, I thought Elayne and he should be closer in age for their near-psychic-ness thingy to make more sense.
Still open for suggestions, actually. Also, sometime when I'm really bored I'll define Elayne's character as apparently I've decided to roleplay her in addition to Felix |
