Name:
Evangeline Grace

Age:
appears about 20, give or take a year

Occupation:
Shinigami, 11th squad: 4th seat

Description:
An incurable showoff, Evangeline will do nearly anything to get noticed, whether it’s pulling risky stunts on her motorbike or cropping her hair and dying it pink (she was amicably teased with the nickname “Bubblegum” during her final year of highschool.) She puts little stock in words and expects others to do the same; her insults, though plentiful (and often profane; she uses her four-letter-words very creatively), are usually delivered good-naturedly and are rarely meant to hurt.

She’s also a compulsive liar, and those who’ve known her for any length of time know not to believe everything she says. She rarely deceives people over important things, but won’t hesitate to make up stories (never meant to be taken seriously) about a kid she knew whose nose fell off from sniffing too many drugs, or a friend of hers who’d visited some ancient temple and reported that the monks threw some killer parties. These ridiculous concoctions are usually ignored by Evangeline’s friends, but she tells them with such a straight face that others may have a hard time determining whether she’s serious.

Most people find Evangeline to be entertaining and fun to have around. She seems incapable of taking any situation entirely seriously””in fact, the more grave the situation, the more likely she is to joke about it. She sometimes comes off as being cruel or uncaring, because she kids around about some extremely serious issues, but the truth is that she literally doesn’t know how else to handle heavy emotions. She’s funniest when she hurts the worst, leading many to believe she doesn’t hurt at all.

Evangeline does tend to stand out a little physically. She’s taller than most girls even when she’s barefoot, but that doesn’t stop her from wearing heels””she’s had high-heeled sandals custom-made to go with her uniform, in order to emphasize her height. Even her shinigami uniform is altered slightly, in order to accommodate her Shikai: her left sleeve has been removed, to avoid getting tangled and in-the-way. The tips of her platinum-blonde hair are still a bright pink color, and her eyes are a vivid electric blue. She has classically beautiful features, but combats them with punk clothing and lots of earrings: three piercings in her left ear and five in her right.

Despite all this, her friendly, laid-back personality makes it easy for Evangeline to fit in with most groups. She possesses the uncanny ability to make the most guarded person at ease within minutes, perhaps because she never stands on ceremony; she is friendly and casual, whether speaking to friends or authority figures, often giving those she knows (including her superiors) nicknames, to avoid having to remember their actual ones. This does get her into trouble from time to time, but it usually manages to get her back out again.

History:
Evangeline grew up in a quiet, strict, conservative family”–They named me Evangeline. Is there anything more to say?”””and was always a bit of a misfit. She was scraping up her knees on a skateboard while her female classmates were busy playing house; she could beat the older kids at poker and got into regular fights after being accused of cheating (which, she insisted, she didn’t have to.) Her brother Richard, five years her senior, was the “ideal child” as far as her parents were concerned, and Evangeline could never manage to fit the footprints he left behind.

Nevertheless, she was always very close to her brother. Any resentment she harbored was focused more toward her parents. They never intentionally neglected her, but they were always busy with their careers and their son, so she sought attention from others instead. Her elementary school teachers quickly classified her as a troublemaker; her classmates might have described her as a clown. Either way, her antics resulted in near-daily trips to detention.

When Evangeline began to talk about seeing people that nobody else could see, her parents assumed it was simply an “imaginary friend” stage, though she was well past that age by the time she began to mention it. When she began highschool and had not stopped “seeing ghosts,” her parents decided that it was just another attention-seeking stunt and ignored it. Richie believed her””that is, he believed that she believed she’d seen these ghosts. He may have doubted her sanity, but never her sincerity.

After a while, she learned to keep quiet about these things. By her second year of highschool, she’d taken a keen interest in mechanics and motorcycles. She hung out with the local bike gang, who adopted her as their mascot, of sorts. She became quite good at making repairs, and by the time she could legally drive a motorbike, she’d gained quite a reputation. Half machine, some called her, with a kind of amused awe.

She was good at riding a bike, too, and hers was so souped up by the time she graduated highschool that she could beat most of her fellow bikers. She did so often, in numerous street races, and her brother always managed to make time to show up at the big ones. He didn’t like some of the dangerous stunts she pulled, or the fact that her midriff was often not-quite-covered, but he was supportive most of the time. She was always happy to have him hanging around.

One day, when Evangeline was hanging out with the bike gang after her part-time community college classes, one of her fellow bikers challenged her to a friendly race. This was not uncommon; she’d beaten many of her companions before, and nobody made a big deal out of it. It was a way to pass time, like playing cards or eating pizza.

So they brought out the bikes. They would be done, Evangeline reasoned, before her brother came to pick her up (it was her 19th birthday, and he’d promised her a special dinner. He was even coming home from college for the occasion.) It was a rainy day, but she wasn’t worried. The bike was in good shape, and she was a good driver.

She didn’t expect the truck to come swerving in the way it did. Later inquiry would determine that the driver was, in fact, drunk at the time of collision; he didn’t even realize that he was in danger of hitting someone until he saw the blood on the windshield. Evangeline Grace would have been killed instantly, the authorities determined, had she not swerved to the left at the last minute. (She had undoubtedly been trying to get out of the path of the car, one paramedic remarked. She would have succeeded had the driver not drunkenly swerved just a little in the same direction. As it was, she died approximately half an hour after the collision””and, the paramedic later observed, her death might have been a good deal less painful had she not bothered to swerve at all.)

The ambulance allowed none of the bikers to accompany Evangeline to the hospital, though several attempted to shove their way in to see her. Only her brother, who arrived at the scene only minutes after the crash, was permitted to stay with her; the rest were kicked out. She remained conscious for several minutes, and read in Richie’s face what he would not tell her: there was no way she was going to pull out of this one. She’d suffered a hard blow to the head and was badly concussed; her skull may have been broken in several places, but the heavy bleeding was what really made Richie look ill. Her leg had been shattered below the knee; her collarbone was nearly as bad.

Oddly enough, the thing that hurt the most was her nose. Everything else felt strangely detatched. She raised one hand to her face, feeling it gingerly. Yep. Definitely swollen. “By dose is broked?” she managed thickly, though her vision was already beginning to fade in and out dizzyingly. Richie pulled her hand away from her face, took one look, and nodded. He looked like he was going to cry, and Evangeline didn’t think she could stand that. “Oh, good,” she said, her voice falsely cheerful. “Dow I cad breade aroud corders.”

An uncharacteristic frown crossed her face for a moment. I hope my bike’s okay, she thought hazily. Then everything went black.

Evangeline was soul-buried quickly, and found herself in a strange, unwelcome new situation… she didn’t speak the language of the land, and she was wearing a dress. These things had to be remedied quickly””especially, she decided, the latter””so she began to look around for someone to tell her where she was and what she was doing there.

Unfortunately, she was nowhere near Seireitai, and the general public was rather rowdy. She adjusted quickly, of course; it wasn’t all that different from what she was used to. Still, she had no way of knowing where to go for food, shelter, and other basic necessities. Few people spoke French or English, and she didn’t know how to communicate in their language, so she wandered around for a while, stealing what she needed to get by.

Eventually she happened upon a gang not terribly unlike her old bike gang. One of them, the leader, it seemed, spoke a little English””not much, but enough that he was able to grasp her confusion. He managed to teach her a few basic things that she’d need to get by, and she learned fast, but almost from the beginning she knew that this wasn’t where she wanted to be. At least when she’d been alive, she’d had a family and friends that she knew and trusted, and while this new group was welcoming enough, she couldn’t help but feel that she wasn't going to get anywhere by sticking around. Besides, she'd already written them off as a boring crowd.

She left them one morning, while they were off stealing breakfast. The few things she’d managed to gather were stuffed into a small sack, and she made her way toward””she hoped””a less rowdy part of town. Er, country. Whatever this was. She still wasn’t entirely sure.

Eventually, she found herself at what people referred to as an Academy””though for what, she wasn’t sure. Deciding that it couldn’t hurt to try, she took the entrance exam and failed. Insulted, she took it again, and failed again. The third try was lucky; she managed to pass by the skin of her teeth and entered the Academy, having finally figured out what it was.

Once in, she applied herself to her studies. (This new country’s appalling lack of motorbikes or anything else mechanical meant that she had plenty of time to spend working, much to her annoyance. When she wasn’t working, though, nobody could possibly say that Evangeline didn’t know how to kick back, relax, and have some fun. She gained a reputation as a hard partier, but did her best not to sacrifice her studies for fun.)

Once in the Gotei 13, she was immediately placed in the 11th squad due to her head-on, powerful fighting style. She began to work her way through the ranks, moving up due to both her own skill and the unfortunate deaths of those just above her. (Nobody ever insinuated that she had anything to do with these deaths, and she didn’t.) She stopped at the 4rd seat, and it appears that she won’t be moving up for a while. She does get along well with her superiors, for the most part. Her relaxed nature fits well with the “thugs” of the Eleventh, and she can hold her own against most of them. Like her teammates, she has a healthy respect for her captain””it’s difficult not to respect a man who could sneeze and obliterate you entirely by accident””but is not as afraid of him as many shinigami from other divisions tend to be. She views her vice-captain as being extremely juvenile (understandably so), and often gets into minor fistfights with Ikkaku and other fellow Eleventh members over babysitting duties. Despite this, she understands the dynamics between her superiors, and is aware of Yachiru’s immense power and speed. (Especially when she’s been given candy, in which case she and her divisionmates tend to forgo the fistfights and delve directly into panic mode.)

Zanpakutou:Fleur Diablotin,” “Little Flower Demon”
Fleur Diablotin, in its sealed form, is a plain katana. The hilt is slender and easy for her relatively little hands to grip. The sheath is very simple, as is the sword itself, with no extra adornments beyond what’s needed. The only distinguishing feature is an etching of a detailed fleur-de-lis near the base of the blade.

Shikai:Vole, Fleur Diablotin!” “Fly, Little Flower Demon!”
In its released form, Fleur Diablotin becomes a large, heavy steel fighting fan, adorned with fleur-de-lis symbols and attached to a long steel chain. Evangeline has come up with several ingenious uses for this chain, often swinging the razor-edged fan in wide arcs, anchoring the weapon to her body, throwing and pulling it back, or simply garroting her enemies. Fleur Diablotin has a concentrated numbing effect on the things and people it touches or cuts, which serves two purposes: one, to help disguise subsequent blows against enemies, and two, to allow her to wield the extraordinarily heavy weapon for long periods at a time. Granted, the numbing effect is not so strong on her as it is on others, and even with it, her arms tend to be sore the next day, but in the heat of battle it’s enough to carry her through.

Bankai: (undiscovered)

Miscellaneous info: Evangeline was born in France and spent the first few years of her life there, so she speaks the language fluently. She quickly picked up English when she moved to America, though she continued to speak with the tiniest of French accents. Only after she died did she learn Japanese, and even now her vocabulary is somewhat limited. She still tends to make mistakes (the most memorable by far being her use of the word “innou” when she meant “hinnou”””that one got her into some trouble, and it took her a long time to figure out what she’d said wrong.) The Japanese that she does speak often draws attention: she learned it from ruffians in Rukongai, and so speaks it like a man.

The third earring in her right ear is a small, intricate gold-and-sapphire hoop that she never takes out. It was given to her by her brother as a part of a set when she first got her ears pierced (just the earlobes, like a good little girl; she was six at the time and her parents still had a relatively firm hold on her.) The other hoop was lost several years ago, when the family moved to America. She suspects that the movers may have stolen it, and keeps a very close eye on the one she has left.

Growing up in a sophisticated family had the added effect of placing Evangeline in the path of numerous dance instructors. She never excelled at anything, mostly because of her stubborn refusal to do anything requiring her to touch a tutu, but some of it seems to have stuck. She used to get made fun of a lot by her friends for her fighting style, which tends to verge on balletic-- suffice it to say that only Yumichika seems to appreciate it. She continues to hold a reputation for being badass, however, by systematically pummeling anyone who so much as looks as though they're thinking about bringing the subject up.

Given her appearance and reputation, it’s understandable that Evangeline is also rather defensive when it comes to her zanpakuto. She is not embarrassed of it, exactly, but its feminine design and flowery etchings have led to several problems in the past. The first time her teammates saw her Shikai, Ikkaku immediately made a few snide remarks about its appearance, leading her to refer to his Shikai, commenting that at least hers wasn’t “cute ”˜n fluffy ”˜n shit.” And then she punched him. It was a good fight, and a fitting introduction to the Eleventh, and few things have changed over the years aside from her rank. She views the division as a family, of sorts (although she’s admitted in the past that Zaraki would make a rather crotchety father), and she understands that they all share their own unique brand of friendship. Which involves regularly beating one another up. Somehow, she’s decided, it works.

And, like any true Eleventh Division member, Evangeline will tell you that dying is not as big a tragedy as running out of beer. The reasoning behind this unusual order of priorities is this: if you're dead, you don't need more beer. If you're out of beer, obviously, you need more beer. Hence, the tragedy.

LOLMG I love this character XD Let's see if I can help you out a bit.

New souls to Soul Society arrive in Rukongai. This is where most souls reside, and is the outer edge of Soul Society. It forms a huge circle around Seireitei (The Court of Pure Souls). It's divided into four sections -- north, south, east, west. Not sure if there's any real difference between these, but, eh, whatever. Each section is then divided into I belive 80 districts, with district one being closest to Seireitei and district 80 being the furthest. The further away, the less order there is. District one is peaceful and happy, where 80 is basically filled with bloodshed and fighting for your life and stuff.

Rukongai is basically like Feudal-era Japan. So, sadly, I don't think there are any motorcycles :( People wear traditional Kimono, and live in those small houses with the spiffy sliding rice-paper (?) doors. Unless you have high reiatsu (like your character), you don't need to eat, and I guess you basically just chill. Soul society is huge place, and apparently even family members, if they didn't die fairly close together, usually cannot find each other. So, they form family-like groups. (Or, in the case of my characters and Rukia and Renji from the show, they just kinda hang out with each other.)

As for the Zanpakutou, they generally start off looking like a regular katana. Some, like Ichimaru Gin's, look like a wakizashi (basically, a short katana). I'm sure there are some that are even shorter, or longer. Also, for example, Jidat's is a Chinese straight-sword. They can also have unique hilts or adornments, etc. Basically, so long as it's some type of sword, it's good.

For Shikai, within reason, they sky's the limit. For one character's shikai, he actually attaches the sheath to the hilt and it transforms into a tri-section staff. Hitsugaya's kinda turns into a dragon of ice. Renji's becomes kinda like a bladed whip. Or, it could be ranged. One person (who gets pwned by Ishida, and who is generally a jerk) has a zanpakutou whose shikai is a bunch of flying dagger thingies that he can control telekinetically. Byakuya's is similar, in that the blade shatters into nearly invisible shards that he can then control in the same way. Most/all of the above types have some skill associated with them. Ichigo, for example, can fire huge waves of energy that do rediculous damage. Urahara can create a "Blood-mist shield." Etc. etc. However, there's another type whose shikai seems to be the ability. Ichimaru Gin's Zanpakutou, upon him saying the command (Ikorose, "shoot to kill"), extends to whatever length he wants at an extremely high speed. Last is the "effect" type. Nara (from here), for example, has a blade whose striking power doubles each time it cuts something. Wabisuke, a Zanpakutou from the anime, doubles the weight of anything it cuts. Another shinigami has a Zanpakutou that can basically absorb the reiatsu of the opponent. Another spiffy Zanpakutou is Soi Fong's. It actually turns into this wierd armor for her hand/forearm, with a large blade on one of the fingers (you'd hafta see it...). It's special ability is the "two-hit kill." When it hits once, it leaves a butterfly mark on the spot. If it hits that same spot again, the victim dies instantly.

As you can see, there's a rediculous amount of room for customization. After all, each Zanpakutou has it's own individual abilites and name. Bankai is the same as Shikai, except with much less reason involved. According to the show, Bankai is generally assumed to be 5-10x more powerful than Shikai. One of the Captain's bankai creates a huge field that denies anyone within sight, sound, smell, and reiatsu-sensing -- total sensory deprevation. The only person who can escape is the one holding the hilt, although this particular person is blind anyway. Another's summons a giant samurai dude that fights along side the wielder. And I mean *giant*, like 10-15x taller than you giant. (His shikai summons the arm of this samurai.) Byakuya's bankai is basically just an expanded version of his Shikai -- two long rows of swords appear, and then shatter. Renji's becomes a much larger version of its original self, with bones instead of steel. It is all connected by his reiatsu, making it nearly impossible to break. Also, at the end is a snake skull, which can eventually shoot fireballs (I think). But, of course, Bankai takes a *long* time to achieve. I think someone said at least 10 years of hard work after achieving Shikai (which takes a while in itself). Or maybe it was that long after achieving materialization ("summoning" the spirit of the Zanpakutou into physical form into the "real" world). Anyway, lots of work, and very few achieve it. (Out of all the shinigami, it is generally only the Captains who have achieved Bankai, although there are exceptions. Zaraki Kenpachi, captain of 11th squad, has *not* achieved bankai, or even shikai -- he's just that beastly powerful. Abarai Renji, on the other hand, is a lieutenant and *has* achieved it.)

Okay, enough about that! If you need help with names once you've got some idea for the abilities, we're more than happy to help!

If you want to make her a high rank, that's fine with me. If you want to be captain, you'll probably need to make a bankai for her. Quoth Wikipedia, there are three ways to become a captain:

* To take the captain proficiency test (隊首 taishu), which requires the knowledge of the final release (bankai). Presumably, most shinigami become captains using this method. At least three existing captains, including the Commander-General, have to witness the test.
* To have personal recommendations from at least 6 captains, and approval from at least 3 of the remaining 7.
* To defeat a captain one-on-one with at least 200 witnesses from the captain’s division. Kenpachi Zaraki is the only known captain who achieved his rank using this method.

Otherwise, As for what squad she's in, that's up to what you think she would do. Look at this page for the squad specialities, as it's basically what we're following: http://www.animecapsule.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=551&hl=

Note, however, that we switched 8th and 12th squads, as 12th squad was definately Arcane Sciences in the anime. Also, if you want to make up a specialization for 9th division and be at the head of that, go ahead XD

Okay, I'm done. Don't hesitate to ask if there's anything else! (Hopefully I didn't write too much)

I only have one comment on her: although it is dramatic and stuff to have her be awake and conscious for those thirty minutes after the crash and before she dies, it's entirely implausible >>

BUUUT I <3 HER SOOOO MUCH AND YES
I have decided that she and Gadek will fight, then become rivals/friends like Ichigo and Renji... or like Caitlin and Kristin I guess xD Always cursing at each other but not meaning it, ya know?

Annnyways. Ask Dan Leong for help with the Shinigami ranks and shit, he not only knows, but is good at explaining things >>

As for the Zanpakutou, I'll try to help. *__*;
For the sword, first, name it and give it an appearance for its spirit (for example, Sekmet's spirit's appearance is a lion-headed woman)(this is its spirit's physical appearance as well when it comes of its own will, ie not Bankai).

Then, decide what the sword will look like in all three forms, and what its powers will be.
Unrealeased--This is its normal state. Most Zanpaku in the unreleased state look like simple katana, with some exceptions, like Kisuke's Benihime, which is a cane. During this stage, it has no special powers.
Shikai (First Release)--The Zan usually changes to a different kind of sword now, and gains a special ability. (Ex: Sekhmet looks like a Kopesh, and superheats over time. Also has the ability to shoot heat bolts.)
Bankai (Second Release)--The sword's spirit comes to the physical world to aid its master. It has massively powerful abilities, but using them is very taxing. This stage can only be reached after high-level training, and very few people ever attain it. (I need help getting one for Gadek, too, but... you can figure out Bankai later as long as you have everything else >>)

OOC:ffffffffffffffffffffffffff ff f
DAN YOU BEAT ME :U

OOC:My opinion on Vannie's Squad: she should have some seat in the 11th. She sounds like she's fit in :D
"11th Division
Specialty: Heavy Combat/ Combat Specialists
Nicknames: Unstoppable 11th, Rough Riders, Hell's Children

@Amelia: Actually, it's quite plausible. She wasn't awake for the whole half hour, just for the first few minutes after being loaded onto the ambulance. Patients who've suffered hard blows to the head and are as badly concussed as Van was usually either A) are rendered comatose immediately, or B) fade in and out of consciousness until either they die or their condition stabilizes... or, sometimes, they'll just fade in and out until they go comatose. Sort of a combination of the two, which is pretty much what happened to Van. She just faded out and never bothered to fade back in again.

^^; Sorry if there was any confusion over that. XD I can see her and Gadek happily cursing at each other... lol, but Van kinda does that to everyone anyway. It'd still be funny, though... XD

And duuuuude.... 11th division sounds AWESOME!! That's totally her. Is there already a captain for that division? What's the highest rank left, and will she need a bankai for it?

@Dan: Thanks for all the info. XD It actually did help a lot. I'm thinking her Zanpakutou is going to be a falchion, pretty simple... like this one (http://dragonsedge.biz/images/Skull_Falchion.jpg) only without the skulls.

As for the Shinkai-- does it have to turn into a different kind of sword? Or could it be, say, the same blade, surrounded by an electrical field that can zap people on command? 'Cause if so, that's totally gonna be Van's.

And if there's no 11th squad captain (is there? I have no clue...) then I'll go ahead and give her a bankai, too. Like maybe, I dunno... the Super Lightning Storm From Hell. >< I can come up with that later, though.

So, yeah... that's kinda all I've got right now. If you've got any ideas for names, I'd be more than happy to hear them. ^^;

Glad I could help ^^

11th squad *does* have a captain (Zaraki Kenpachi), and we'll probably keep his lieutenant, because she's hilarious. I don't mind ignoring the rest in that squad, so you can be 3rd officer if you want to be in 11th squad. (But, just because you're not a lieutenant doesn't mean you can't be at the same level. In the anime, there's actually someone who could easily be lieutenant or 3rd officer, but chose to be 5th because those slots were taken, and thought 4 was an ugly number.) 10th squad could actually be good, too, if your Zanpakutou is elemental. Dan may or may not agree to ousting Matsumoto (the lieutenant). I think, though, that we'll keep Hitsugaya as captain there, because he's like the polar opposite of Jidat, but the same height XD

Anyway, I played around with my dictionary, and found a couple ideas for an electric/lightning Zanpakutou:

Raigoku - Lightning/thunder prison
Dengoku - Electricity prison

If you have an idea for an english name, that could help, too ^^;

As for the shikai, that sounds fine to me. It doesn't really *have* to change physically -- there are several that don't have any physical change, they just get a new ability -- that's just generally what happens. If you want to come up with a bankai, even if she hasn't achieved it or mastered it yet, that's totally fine. Or, if you'd rather wait, that's cool too.

And... I lost my train of thought, so hopefully I answered your questions XD;

Sorry for the delay! I'm pretty sure you've gotten everything you need ;)

The only thing I could say is to suggest it's simply a katana in it's normal form, so it can have more of an obvious transformation for shikai. But, like I said, you don't really need that, and it's fine as it is if you prefer that. It's up to you!

Approved!

EDITED:

Zanpakuto (I was never entirely happy with hers, so I stole the Zanpakuto off another character I had lying around not doing anything important. Hope it works), appearance (only very slightly), rank, and a few minor characterization-oriented details. She curses a lot now. :) Overall, she fits a little better with the Eleventh division now, I think... and her Zanpakuto's name could be the basis for a lot of fights. XD

Still love it. If possible, I love it more.

The tragedy of lacking beer is quite the serious one. We can't allow that.

I agree whole-heartedly with Westbrook. A welcome addition to the RP, by all means :)
