Riley O’Leary Age: 29 Race: Human Occupation: Priest Description: Known to most only as “Father O’Leary,” Riley is the well-liked pastor of St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church. He is easily recognized by his shock of reddish-gold hair and piercing blue eyes, and most consider him to be a comfortable, casual sort of person (a welcome change from his stiff, formal predecessor, the always-ill Father Flores). In fact, Riley is so popular with his church community that even the more rigid, rule-abiding men and women are generally willing to overlook his alcoholic tendencies. Most of them know, but few of them say anything; the generally accepted opinion is that there was never an Irish priest worth his keep who didn’t tip the bottle every now and then. Though he’s not the sort of attractive that makes highschool girls swoon, Riley is far from painful to behold. His face is angular and slightly on the harsh side, but his eyes are soft and open, radiating a clear, friendly kindness. He is a man of few words, but his very presence seems to have a calming effect on people. This could be due to the fact that he’s “a man of god,” or it may be simply because of the emotional strength that he seems to possess. Either way, he deals well with other peoples’ hysterics, as well as his own. When sober, he’s extremely levelheaded. The rest of the time, he can usually pass for being extremely levelheaded””he holds his alcohol exceptionally well, and people often can’t tell when he’s drunk and when he’s not. (It’s rumored that he’s shown up to mass on more than one occasion with a belly full of scotch; he has neither admitted to nor denied this.) Possibly the only thing that can make Riley lose his composure is a politician. When he’s faced with one, the term “Irish temper” takes on an entirely new level of meaning. He believes all of them to be lying, cheating, scumbags, and he’s put Johnnie Walker on his ballot for years, rather than actually voting for one of the “ridiculously despicable idiots” listed. Dealing with politics concerning religious issues has caused Riley to become rather disillusioned with both politics and the various uses of religion in politics. Aside from politicians, however, he views all people””regardless of religion””as worthwhile human beings. How you believe doesn’t matter, in his mind, as long as you believe. His sense of justice is fierce, and he believes strongly in the triumph of good over evil… he just hasn’t found a way to participate in the fight yet. Different priests have different battlefields, all of them in some way controversial: gay marriage, abortion, the conversion of the entire world to Catholicism… Riley doesn’t fight on either side in any of these particular crusades. He has yet to find his own battlefield, and he’s beginning to wonder whether it even exists. History: Riley was raised on Shakespeare and Charles Dickens. His parents were both well-educated, and he loved to read as a child. He’s always had very avid imagination and was open to any kind of stories: classics, biographies, science fiction… anything he could get his hands on. He eventually settled on biblical stories and tales of the occult as his favorites, and by the age of fifteen he very was well versed in both. The only ones that he really believed in, of course, were the biblical ones… but perhaps a small part of him knew what his conscious mind denied””that there was a chance that the other impossible tales may be more than silly, made-up stories. And, perhaps, that the two genres were not so entirely different. His fascination with these subjects””and their underlying themes of good and evil””caused him to pursue a career of faith, and he became a priest at the age of twenty-five. He never fully forgot about his darker interests, of course, and he secretly wants to become a writer of dark stories and terrifying tales. He still knows what he knew as a child; that is, he can tell you what to do with the coffin of a vampire, or how to banish a spirit. Not that he’s ever believed in all that, but the subject still fascinates him. Its very simplicity is what’s always drawn him, the ease with which one can read a storybook know that bad is bad and good is good. Vampires and werewolves are bad, and those who fight them are good, and if life could only be that simple then everything would be a thousand times better for everyone. Riley began to drink in earnest about three years ago, when he was twenty-six. This was about the time that he realized how utterly unhappy he was. He’d entered the church and would stay in the church, as duty required, but he was rather miserable about the whole deal. Lecturing to crowds and listening to confessions””he felt that he was making no difference, that he was gaining no ground for goodness and righteousness. He still feels ineffectual, but writing and alcohol (and sometimes a combination of the two) usually do a good job of taking his mind off things like that. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ [color=olive:5374ca3b08] Just in case the vampy roleplay ever claws its way back to life. I know it's rather sloppily written; there may even be a few typos in there. >< Sorry. By the way, before someone decides to sue me (XD)... Yes, this is a total ripoff from Stephen King's Father Callahan. Dunno if anyone's read the book 'salem's Lot (or seen the movie), but I thought I'd tell you guys just in case, as much as I'd love to say that I came up with such a cool character all by myself. Even though it's a ripoff/slight-ripoff/whatever you wanna call it (reference?), he seems to be a good character for the story. My character for the Roaring 20's, Jack Walters, is referenced from the Call of Cthulhu roleplaying game for the Xbox, but I removed his supernatural powers of foresight to keep to a more realistic feel to the story.
I hope Hellsing roleplay goes back up too. :( |

And the ripoff thing... yeah, I figured he'd work for the story, and I changed a lot of things... I mean, the history's totally different, and the motives'll be quite different. Really, the only thing that's the same is the fact that he's a disillusioned alcoholic Irish priest. XD Which is a lot, but oh well. I somehow doubt that Stephen King's gonna come around SilverHearts and decide to sue me for stealing his character. >< |
