Age: 20 Occupation: Mechanic aboard the Wessel Alliance: Evie. He is in awe of her many experiences, and thinks her some kind of princess. Description: By all appearances, Valentin is a battle-hardened thug who has seen plenty of death, and who expects to see plenty more in the near future. The lines of his jaw look to be carved from stone, and his eyes seem to be set in a half-lidded look of disinterest—like he knows very intimately how quickly and easily he could bash your head in, and doesn’t need to bother looking at you properly. That he could do that is not much of an item for debate—one look at his muscular arms is enough proof for most people. Of course, this is precisely why it is never good to judge a person by appearances. In fact, Valentin has not seen many people die at all, and though his arms are impressively muscled, his strength has probably never been put to any sort of destructive use. Though he often seems to be only half-focused on the people in front of him, it’s only from not knowing what to say to them. Many think Valentin to have gotten overlooked on the day brains were being handed out, but this is not entirely true. Yes, his grasp of English is somewhat questionable. Sure, sarcasm and clever turns-of-phrase are completely lost on him. But, he has more common sense than many—though that doesn’t mean a whole lot, depending on what crowd you look at—and he can draw you an accurate set of blueprints for any number of ships from memory. Most of those, given the parts and the time, he could even build for you. Anyone actually knew Valentin would say that he hasn’t an ounce of mean in him. He is kind spirited, and seems to not even understand the idea of pessimism. He is not exactly naive, but Valentin does like to believe that things tend to work out for the best, and he rarely shows distrust towards another person. While not what you would call “driven,” when Valentin is set a task, he performs it eagerly and to the best of his abilities. He does not often come up with goals for himself, being perfectly content to laze about and daydream, but he will not easily give up if he does have some goal. Indeed, one of the few goals he regularly sets for himself is tidiness. Though he can necessarily overlook some grease and grime on his own person—he works with engines all day, after all—his cabin is spotless, and the engine room is as near to it as can be expected. Valentin can usually be found wearing rectangular, thick-framed glasses over his chestnut eyes, and some kind of watch cap or bandanna covering his nearly black hair. History: While it’s true that every family has their own quirks, with no parents, five uncles, 32 brothers and 27 sisters, Valentin’s was truly a special kind of dysfunctional. As a baby, Valentin was left at an orphanage on Beaumonde. He lived there for about four years, until he was big enough to connect a square peg into a square terminal, when he was “adopted” by McKinley Ketter (under the pseudonym “Kyle Kemper”) and forced to work at the Ketter Brothers’ Ship Manufactory. In fact, the Ketters had a standing arrangement with several local orphanages, providing ship usage and protection in exchange for young, malleable workers. Valentin spent the next twelve years of his life at the Manufactory, used as essentially free labor by the enterprising Ketter Brothers, turning out semi-quality ships for half the price the Alliance charged, using parts mostly scrounged from the junk yard. The conditions there were downright awful. While they were periodically allowed to wash in a vain attempt to prevent the spread of sickness, hygiene was of secondary concern to food. Of course, food was secondary to the work, and consisted of just enough that most of the children survived from year to year. Beaumonde was the perfect place for the Ketters’ little operation, as it was just far enough from the core planets that the officials could be bribed, but close enough that the Alliance would purchase from them every now and then. Their prices were hard to resist, after all. Around age nine, Valentin’s diligence and skill earned him a promotion to Engine Crew Leader, putting him directly in charge of ensuring that the engines he and his crewmates put together were perfect. The Ketters’ had a rather clever, if twisted, system for preventing jealousy and bullying of the Crew Leaders—that is, while they got a bit more food as motivation, they also got beaten more severely and more often. Any fault with the final product, even if it was caused by someone else on the crew, earned them a beating. If that fault was theirs, well, the beatings were double. By thirteen, Valentin had been made Crew Leader for Team One, putting him in charge of an entire ship. He was very thorough, more than the leaders of the other teams, and even felt a small measure of pride when his team finished a ship. He was given access to the blueprints for reference, and stayed up late studying them until he knew every corner of every ship the Ketters built. He didn’t hold that position for long, however. A little more than a year, Unification War was over, and it was not long after that the Alliance decided to bring a little more law to Beaumonde. They were not keen on the fact that the Ketter brothers had been supplying to the Independents, and, no longer having that pressing a need for their cheap ships for their own forces, the Alliance decided to remind the brothers who ran things, and perhaps force them to clean up their act. The trouble was, the Ketter brothers misinterpreted the Alliance’s goal. Thinking they were being raided, shut down and arrested, the brothers tried to make a hasty get away with as much money, workers and materials as they could. Those children who were less than enthusiastic about being in the Ketters’ employ took advantage of the confusion to attempt an escape. Not knowing what exactly was going on, the Alliance forces readied their guns, and at some point shots were fired. After the ensuing chaos had settled down, there were several casualties on all sides. The brothers had escaped, but not without taking down several Alliance soldiers—as well as more than a few wounds themselves. There were also casualties among the children. One of them was Valentin. He was rushed to the hospital with the rest, and came under the care of a Doctor Janika Brekkur. Mentally, the boy seemed surprisingly unscathed by the experience, despite his multiple wounds. Still, when he realized he was free to talk as much as he liked and do what he liked, he was eager to share his experiences; he found a willing ear, if not an eager one, in Dr. Brekkur. When Dr. Brekkur suggested he come to work on a spaceship and keep it running like she was new, he accepted gladly. Other: Only Valentin’s first name was given by his parents. The orphanage didn’t know his surname, so he made up his own. They all came from ship or engine models that he liked. He is “the third” because he thought it sounded cool. OOC: Valentin is also very subject to change, but I kind of like this. The part where he joins the crew is only tentative, but if it's cool with the cap'n then we can keep it |
