Alias: Mambo Age: 24 Occupation: Member of the X-Men and also the newest teacher at the Academy. She is the professor of anthropology, teaching all the classes that fall under that category and some additional ones in religion and sociology. It was a position created for her, as there were no anthropology classes at the Academy before her arrival. Her position falls under the Foreign Language and Cultures department, and as such, is Jean Auclair’s subordinate. Powers: Aurelia’s mutation is the ability to not only see but also interact with supernatural beings such as ghosts, spirits, demons and demigods. She can also track and distinguish different living souls that are near to her, with a little concentration. She can easily see ghosts that wander the spiritual plane with unfinished business- spirits that reside in another dimension but occupy the same space as the real world. She will often talk to them and then help them resolve their problems so that they can pass on. If they are unruly and have been causing harm to the living, she has the knowledge and skill to force them to pass on or imprison them in small dolls. Occasionally she will ask for a ghost’s help or expertise, and if they agree, she will take on their essence and then do whatever they do best with ease. More powerful beings, and those that have settled, live further away in the spirit world- the stratosphere of the spiritual plane. Aurelia can visit the spirit world in dreams, but she cannot visit it bodily because of the wards on her power. Instead, when she needs to call on the aid of a spirit that resides there, she uses a spelled mirror or portal and if they see fit to help her, they come. The more powerful these spirits are, the less control she has over herself and her actions. When she channels a spirit, she affects their speech and sometimes thought patterns, expressions and posture- resembling them in every way except body structure. She cannot control this effect. She can also make simple charms that call upon the essence of a spirit for others to use- say, a charm for luck or protection. Description: Aurelia usually wears a small black tube top and baggy white short-pants that end at the knee, only adding shoes to that when absolutely necessary- she hates them. Many would call her beautiful, and she is (clearly) very self-confident because she knows that, but at the same time she does not preen over her appearance or put too much importance on it, as she knows that outer beauty fades quickly. Aurelia’s shoulder-length hair is in a messy but fashionable-looking ponytail nearly always, except for formal events- for which she will straighten her hair. She has tribal tattoos on her face, arms, back and legs, but they are invisible until she uses her powers- at that time, they glow orange. She never, ever takes off her red-orange scarf. She does wash it regularly, but must hand wash it so that it still keeps contact with some part of her. She usually wears the large scarf around her waist as a sort of belt or sash, but when she is cold she will use it as a bandanna around her neck or head. When doing rituals, she will often unroll it and use it as a skirt. Aurelia is very patient and wise for her years, and is very slow to anger or annoy but easy to amuse. She will always listen to both sides of an argument before making a decision, unless one is grossly wrong. Her view on mutants is that although they have great power, they are still no better than any other person on the planet. Everyone has his or her strengths and weaknesses; no one is born a god. History: Aurelia was born into an ancient line of shamans from Haiti, who claimed ancestry from the great Morgan le Fay herself. She was raised in a community on the island where spirits and the rituals pertaining to them were a part of everyday life, and something to be treasured and called upon wisely, whether you were born with the gift of seeing them or not. For example, when someone was sick, the whole village would get together to do a spirit dance to summon help for the afflicted person. From the moment she had been born, her elders had noticed an unsettling phenomenon: spirits flocked to her great power like cats to a dish of milk. No person had been born with the gift so strong in many years. So they gave her parents a blessed scarf with even more spells stitched to the inside, instructing them to never take it off of their child. She grew up healthy and strong and loved. The accident happened by accident when Aurelia was 14, still only in training to be a shaman. She went to the stream to take a bath, and she took off all her clothes… including the scarf. As soon as she realized this with a shock of panic, there was darkness, nothing more. She woke up a full week later to a destroyed village and the saddened faces of her family all around… except for her teacher, her own father. He had stopped the demon-possessed Aurelia at the cost of his own life. They had all greatly underestimated Aurelia’s power, and it had cost them. The elders sewed her a new scarf, instructing her to never use her powers again, since the one person who could stop her was undoubtedly gone to the spirit world. He was not gone, however, as he could not move on with Aurelia left untrained. So he patched himself into a small voodoo doll, and instructed Aurelia to travel the world in search of spiritual knowledge and also to better herself. Aurelia first went north to America to train under an Apache shaman, Jean Louise Wolf-Runs-West, learning about the spirits of nature, living and dead. In Vatican City she trained with Catholic priests and nuns to learn the art of exorcism. In Africa she learned where her gods came from, and that the use of a simple stick could be devastating in the right hands. In Indonesia she was tattooed with an ancient and powerful spell to contain her powers; in Japan she learned about true silence and the deadly beauty of swords. In China she learned how to control her own spirit and body. Without even hardly noticing, ten years had gone by. She returned to America once again, this time to New Orleans, to learn more of the voodoo arts. A surprise waited there, a representative of someone called Charles Xavier, who wished to speak to her about teaching at his academy… Other: Aurelia’s first language is French, but she can speak English, Mandarin Chinese and Japanese quite well too, due to her travels. She loves dancing and also practicing her martial arts (Kung Fu, African stick fighting, kenjutsu). She also enjoys painting and relaxing outdoors, among other things, in her spare time. Neither her office nor her bedroom is decorated in a fashion that could be considered even remotely normal from a Western standpoint. This is immediately obvious by the spell-wheels and strange designs painted in white mud over the doors, as well the dried cow’s tongues nailed to the lintels. Her office is more of a museum of sorts, containing traditional dress from many different countries and ancient texts on the shelves, and a multicolored rug with a frankly terrifying pattern on it that looks like it’s eating you if you stand on it. There are a great number of bottles on the upper half of one of the shelves, only a few of which are alcohol- they don’t look any different, and Aurelia herself has even once or twice gotten a nasty surprise instead of wine. You would expect a room with old shaman artifacts to be dusty and cluttered, but Aurelia would never let it get that way. However, there is an odd (though not unpleasant) tang in the air that cannot be banished with any cleaning agent. Her room is decorated with various paintings of hers and some animal skulls, and has the rest of her summoning equipment and outfits on a rack in one corner. The only other things in the room are a wardrobe and a straw mattress with fur bedding. The rest of the room is open floor, as Aurelia often needs the space when doing rituals, especially dancing ones. |
