OOC: I'm assuming that we're a considerable distance from Urahara's place

Jidat leaped after his fellow captain, with Nanase close behind him. The lieutenant moved close to his side and looked at him, now looking rather serious. She had accepted that someone had betrayed them, and was beyond trying to justify things. She'd held out as long as possible, but she had to admit the truth now.

"Jidat, you should go ahead and let him know what's going on."

"Yes, you're right. Time is of the essence."

"I'll stay behind. If anything happens I'll catch up with you -- we probably can't trust the communicators anymore. I doubt anything will, though."

Jidat nodded, then jumped almost straight upward, made a twisted slightly to change his angle so that he was more closely parallel to the ground, and disappeared. He reappeared a great distance away, moving at a dangerous velocity. This was one of the biggest drawback to his Raipo over the standard Shunpo -- while the distance it could cover was vastly greater, the exit speed became almost uncontrollable at higher distances, compared to Shunpo's generally zero exit speed. It had taken Jidat a long time to figure out how to manage long distance travel with it gracefully. Sensing that he was closing in on Urahara's place, he slowly adjusted his body position to be less aerodynamic. Doing it too fast could result in injury, but he wouldn't slow down in time otherwise.

At the last second, he flash-stepped to the ground. While he'd found this to be a good way to reduce his momentum, it wasn't always perfect. This was one of those times when it didn't work out beautifully. As soon as Jidat's feet hit the ground, he lost his balance and flew through the doors into the shop. The body has trouble dealing with sudden losses of momentum.

"Oh, why if it isn't my pretty Captain Jidat!" the be-hatted shop-owner said by way of a greeting. "You look to be in a bit of a rush."

"You... may know already," Jidat responded, struggling to his feet. "Disoriented" didn't quite cover what he was feeling. It was a mix of that feeling you get when looking straight down over the ledge of a thousand-foot drop and the one you get after you spin around really fast and suddenly stop. There was possibly even a hint of nausea. "Something or someone has locked myself and Nezei out of Soul Society, together with our adjutants. We've suspected foul play of some sort for a while, and have been in the minority discussing it. We... believe this to be part of the cause for our situation. At any rate, it's clear that whatever was going to happen is happening now."

"And you need me to get you back in?"

"As soon as possible, yes."

"I see..."

OOC: Should we add a plot twist? Anyone with an idea? Otherwise, someone can just have Urahara respond saying that he'll get started immediately. This just seems an opportune time for a twist, if we want one, but I'm too tired to make one and don't have one ready ^^;

Nezei appeared to be the only one not shocked by the sudden disappearance of Jidat. Partially because of his own cold demeanor, and also due to his knowledge of his friends techniques. He knew that Kisuke couldn't possibly deny them, but he knew it would take him time to create the gate. There was no time to be wasted, and the sooner it was opened the better. It was not but a few minutes later that the small team arrived at Urahara's shop, the strangely dressed shopkeeper leaning on his cane out front.

"Jidat already told me of your dire circumstances, but it will still take ten days to open the Senkei."

"Yes, I am aware. Would you mind if we stayed here while we waited?"

"Not at all, not at all. Make yourselves at home...as long as you make yourselves useful. It isn't nice to freeload." Nezei nodded calmly, but Nara rolled his eyes. Before he realized it, he was laying face first in the dirt with the tip of a cane pressed against the back of his skull.

"That includes you, Nara-kun. I'm sure I can find all kinds of chores for you to do. By the way, Nezei, I couldn't help but notice that impressive release of reiatsu not too long ago. What was that all about?"

"Nothing at all, Kisuke, nothing at all."

Ryouji ran into his house, slammed the door shut and ran upstairs to his room. Immediately, he began fishing around through his book collection, trying to find one of the more archaic Quincy texts. He'd had no choice but to remove himself from the scene, with that many possible hostile Shinigami waiting around. However, if he could just...

His concentration was broken by a sudden knock at his door. Looking up from his dusty book collection, he turned towards the door...and sneezed mightily, his glasses flying from his face. Through his blurry eyes he saw a slim hand catch the flying spectacles. The figure kneeled down next to him and handed him his glasses back. When his vision cleared, he saw his sister smiling at him.

"Just what are you up to, Ryouji?" she asked, smiling.

"Shinigami, Reia, six of them, and a lot of Hollows...I got caught up in their fight..." He paused as he saw the look of concern cross her face, but then continued. "I had to break away, but I've got one of their scents, I'll find him easily. I just need to make sure that the others won't interfere until I'm done with him."

"You know I don't like that obsession you have with the Shinigami, brother..." she said quietly, after a moment had passed. Ryouji sighed and then slowly returned to paging through his books. He stopped again as Reia grabbed his wrist.

"But I will help you however I can." Ryouji smiled. Together they poured over some old texts, trying to find some kind of Quincy power that would aid them in this.

TWO DAYS LATER

The shinigami had been preparing for battle. For two days after they arrived at Uruhara's, they trained against each other strenuously. While tiring, they all understood the gains of the practice and knew they needed to get stronger. The captains engaged Uruhara, the only one who could match on their level, leading to great amounts of destruction in the underground facility. Yes, many hours had been spent in their efforts.

This hour, however, saw a different scene. Nezei and Jidat were sitting on the front porch, the former puffing lazily on a pipe. Nanase and Nara were sweeping the floor of store itself, in gigai's like the others for the chores. Evangeline and Moira were drinking, as usual, in the back room...loudly and raucously. As a cool breeze swept across the front of the store, Nezei sighed and emptied his pipe and knocked it against the side of the chair he was in.

"I was hoping it wouldn't come to this..." he said softly. His effeminate compatriot raised a curious eyebrow for a moment, and then turned his head out to the road as he felt the same wave of energy that Nezei had.

"So angry..." he said, running a hand through his hair, "I assume you want to handle this?" Nezei nodded slowly, his eyes focused outward. "Then I shall inform the others."

A figure cloaked in white and blue appeared in the distance. Nezei shed his gigai and walked out into the road. Ten feet away from him, the Quincy stopped. Ryouji glared at Nezei, who's eyes didn't reflect any anger at all.

"My name is Akihide Ryouji. And I am the last Quincy. You are a shinigami. I want to fight you." the silver-haired figure said.

"I see. May I ask why?"

"Your disgusting treatment of your subordinate seems like reason enough. You attacked her for minor disobedience."

"I have no cause to justify myself to you. If you wish to fight so badly, then let us fight."

"A moment, I wish to know your name first." A moment of silence passed this statement.

"Very well," Nezei said at last. Drawing his sword, he turned it over in his hand so the the blade faced toward the earth.

"My name is Rekuzan Nezei." As he spoke, he reached up to his haori and pulled out a small silver cross, with a smaller circle around the intersection of the cross. "And I am the last Quincy."

The fight was brief, and Nezei didn't even release his sword. The kid was good, he admitted, but not anywhere near strong enough for a captain. The Quincy was lying on the ground at Nezei's feet, completely exhausted.

"I am sorry that you do not have the strength to fight me. But I have no real quarrel with you and I don't intend to kill you."

"Finish me off you cowardly-" Ryouji didn't get to finish his sentence as a sword prodded gently at his throat.

"I said, I'm not going to kill you. You are young, and impulsive, and did not fully understand your enemy. Today, that mistake will cost you no more than your pride. It will grant you an opportunity. I will offer you the chance to grow stronger. I will, however, have your word that you will not seek to harm any of the shinigami at this residence."

"And why should I..."

"You clearly have a vendetta against shinigami. I do not know why, nor do I care. However, Soul Society is in grave danger right now. You, as a Quincy, understands that this affects all life and afterlife. The destruction of Soul Society would mean the end of existence. If you are to help us, however, you must be stronger. And, not only will your powers grow, but if you help us, I will offer you another battle against me when this affair is over, if you still desire it. Is this satisfactory?" Ryouji swallowed as he considered the offer. He was no fool, and did recognize the seriousness of the issue at hand.

"Very well...I accept your terms." The sword withdrew from his throat, and a hand reached down to help him up. Ryouji stared at Nezei again, no anger this time, but a curiosity.

"You really are a Quincy, aren't you?" he said after a moment.

"Yes. And few know. My pride must suffer for the sake of the many." Ryouji continued to stare at Nezei, as though seeing him in a new light. As Nezei walked away, Ryouji followed him into the store and prepared for whatever was in store.

***

Eight days later, following days of intensive training and some bonding, the small group was ready to depart for Soul Society. Over the last several days, the Quincy had become close friends with Nara and Nanase, much to his own surprise, and the three were conversing jovially as they stood by near the gate. As the seven finished checking to make sure they had everything, Uruhara appeared.

"Aha, the hour is upon us, if you will all just stand over here by the gate?" As they moved toward the gate, Uruhara's assistants finished their seals and a portal opened in the stone frame.

"Now, be warned of what you may find on the other side...being sealed off can mean only trouble, and likely you will run into it immediately. Be prepared, and remember what you have learned." Without another moment of hesitation, all seven walked through the gate.
