Just thought I'd compile a short list of important terms so we're all on the same page :)

Reiatsu - "Spirit Force" or "Spiritual Pressure." This seems to be both a measure of someone's power (ala DBZ) and the name for someone's pool of energy (ala MP or mana).

Soul Society - Basically, Heaven
Seireitei - "Court of Pure Souls." The place in Soul Society where Shinigami chill
Rukongai - The place in Soul Society where non-Shinigami chill (ie: regular human souls)
Shinigami - Death God
Taichou - "Captain." The highest ranked and most respected shinigami (There are 13, one per squad)
Fukutaichou - "Lieutenant." Literally, "Vice-captain," but Lieutenant is a more accurate translation.
CMC - Covert Mobile Corp. This group of Shinigami are, well, covert. And, they move around a lot. But seriously, they collect information about nearly everything, both in Seireitei and in the human world
Hollow - basically, Death God's enemies. Spirits gone bad :O
Kidou - "Demon Arts." Basically, Shinigami magic
Hadou - The destructive branch of Kidou
Bakudou - The brach of Kidou used for binding (constricting movement). I think healing spells and such are also considered Bakudou.

Zanpakutou - "Soul Slayer." A shinigami's main weapon. Usually they normally look like a katana, but it can be "released" twice, with a possible extension of the second form, each providing new abilities and/or powerups.

Shikai - the first release of a Zanpakutou. This is activated by calling out the Zanpakutou's name, which you must first learn somehow.

Bankai - the second release. This is extremely difficult and generally requires a long time to achieve. Having Bankai is usually a requirement for becoming a Captain. To achieve this, the Shinigami must force their Zanpakutou to submit to their will. Bankai is said to provide five to ten times more power than Shikai.

Of course, I should also toss out the obligatory wikipedia links:

Hope this wasn't a waste of space ^^;

Yaaay, thanks for putting all this info in one place! I watch Bleach, but still forget some of this sometimes D:

Hey, question--in this RP we're only omitting Ichigo, Orihime, Chad & Gang, right? And, other than the 6th and 8th Squads, the Gotei 13 is still the same?

I know that the Urahara Shoten contains the same peeps, so I'm happy 8D
*much love for Yoruichi & Kisuke*

Sorry I didn't get to your questions XD Yes, we're basically ignoring them. However, what happened with them *did* happen. I think we're setting this about 100 years after their whole little soul society adventure. (Urahara and them, of course, are still fine because, well, they're awesome)

On another subject, some random rants by yours truely about soul society and zanpakutou can be found here:

Update:

After reading (way too much of) the manga, I've discovered that I made a bit of a mistake with my understanding of reiatsu:

Reiatsu (霊圧) literally means "Spirit pressure," and is a measure of someone's fighting strength, ala powerlevel in DBZ. If someone's reiatsu is significantly higher than yours, you can literally be paralyzed and/or get sick.

Reiryoku (霊力) literally means "Spirit strength," and is sort of like your mana pool, or the amount of energy/ki/chi that you have to use

Hope that helps
